Alexander stopped in front of her, surprised at how horrible she looked. To human eyes he was sure it was bad enough, but to his stronger eyes he could see just how bad it was. The dark hallow bags under her eyes, she was thinner and paler, and he wondered just what had happened to her.Â
âWhat happened to you?â He asked simply, voice even as his eyes surveyed her. He didnât let her change the direction of the conversation, he wanted to know what was happening.Â
It was like a punch in the gut. âI... umm...â how did she even begin to explain this? âMy patron... he....â It had been so long since sheâd seen Alex, her patrons doing really, so where should she start?
She sighed. âItâs a long story, but Maxwell was compelling me and Mason and my brother tried to save me. In the end they all left me to pay the price.â The aftermath just kept coming and coming for her, a ceaseless ocean of waves for her to bare by herself.Â

âYou look like you could use a drink with a lower caffeine content and a higher alcohol content,â he said as he moved up in line a little, still watching her.
âAre you offering?â Her voice was shaky but a smile touched her lips for the smallest of moments. She was in the habit as of late to turn down any requests that would bring her out into the city but honestly... she really could use a drink. And better it be with a stranger who only knew her as the thin, pale human rather than an old friend who would see that sheâd changed too much in the last few months.
It had been the best two weeks that Andrew could remember having. He had lounged around a mistressâ apartment, generally naked, with no cares in the world. Now, he was back and the cage life was once again killing him. âWhat the fuck could you possibly be whining about now?â He groaned from his cot.
âWell thatâs not the attitude I was hoping for,â Seraphina spoke as she heard the slave the intended to rent speak up. He was talking to another slave and so her tone was joking.
She looked different than the last time he saw her. Last time she was a mistress wolf, large and in charge. Since then, thanks to a heavy dose of reality, she was thinner and paler than last time. Anyone could look at her and see she wasnât sleeping or eating enough and she was much weaker than sheâd ever been. She hoped Andrew would still want to go home with her even with these changes. âHi,â she spoke softly as she leaned against his cell door.
Jackson knit his eyebrows together as the puppies frolicked around them, oblivious to the pain in the human girlâs voice. He lowered his voice, leaning close to her. âHoney, itâs just a picture. You okay? Whatâs goinâ on?â A fire. âThere was a fire at my place too. You got anybody lookinâ out for ya? Do I need to snap some necks?â
She felt overwhelmed as residual compulsion blasted through her mind with instructions that didnât make sense. Instructions she had to fight all the time.
She shook her head at his words. âNo, the fire was... it was arson.â she explained. In fact fire wasnât exactly the best word as her home had blown up and been irradiated from where it stood. She shook her head again. âNo ones necks left to snap,â Her patron was dead, her brother was dead, Mason was gone in the wind. She was the only bit of shrapnel left of her old life.
âWell I havenât seen you in some time stranger. Have you been hiding?â
Seraphina recognized the voice and immediately hated leaving the house. She was so much thinner than before, paler and the dark circles under her eyes showed she hadnât been sleeping well in a long time. She looked fragile and more breakable than she ever had.
And that filled her with a sense of shame when people she knew finally saw her again. âNot by choice,â she answered in a quiet voice. âHow have you been?â she asked in an attempt to change the subject.

Dahlia signed off on the death certificate, stepping away from the secretaries desk as the woman sighed, filing the paperwork accordingly. The wolf sighed, collecting her coat and bag before she glanced behind her, seeing the artist seated at a neighboring desk. âSeraphina,â she remarked. Maxwell had skipped out on her, the money sent but the time she was owed with the girl never offered. A shame. The girl looked deathly as she sat there, drawing her concern. It was far worse than before. âSeraphina, are you alright?â
Seraphina looked up when her name was called. She offered her most unconvincing smile yet and nodded. âIâm fin- AH!â she cried out as hot coffee splashed over the lip of her cup onto her hand.
She quickly put her cup down and examined her hand. The skin was bright red and against her skin that had become far too pale, it seemed far worse than it was. It was a painful burn but sheâd live and her hand would be fine. But under all the stress of the last few weeks it was just too much. Tears blurred her eyes instantly and she struggled for dear life to stay standing on her two shaking legs.
Rose had noticed her and called out after her. âSera! ITâs Rose!â
Seraphina when she heard the voice of her old friend and was instantly filled with shame. It was the reaction she had to everyone who had known her before Maxwell had ruined her.
âHey, Rose.â She spoke without turning around.
Felix had been waiting in line to deposit a large sum of money into his account when he caught sight of the girl. He didnât overhear any of her conversation with the attendant, and he had never seen her before, but he saw the way her coffee shook uncontrollably in her hands. He was standing close enough by that talking to her wouldnât be shouting. âIf youâre not careful with that, youâre going to burn yourself.â
She looked up at the man who spoke, a little confused until she realized he meant her coffee. She placed it down on the counter and clasped her hands in front of her which helped to conceal her shakiness. âThank you,â she spoke in a quiet voice.
âSera!â Jackson called across the street. He was wrangling a pair of squirming dogs on leases, Sadie and a new one, fluffy, still a puppy. âWhen am I gonna get that portrait?!â
Seraphina turned when she heard Jackson and was immediately filled with guilt. The portrait sheâd been working on. Her shoulders slumped impossibly lower as she remembered... âI donât know... she answered honestly. âI had it finished but then there was a fire...â she didnât finish. Emotions bubbled up as she remembered the disastrous engagement party. âI have to start over,â she spoke while trying not to let her voice shake. She felt and looked so weak these days, no need to let her voice display it as well.

There she was again, back at the Dominion to sign more papers. More of Michaelâs assets were being found under his false and real name and so more assets were being transferred to her name. She hated it, each pen stroke seemed to make her brother more dead.
The coffee a secretary had fetched for her shook in her hand as she waited for the lawyers to be ready for her. She shook a lot these days.
Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice.
From what Iâve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction iceÂ

Sheâs spent weeks in the Dominion. First as a criminal charged with the murder of a vampire and a werewolf and the crime of attempting to be turned without the Kingâs consent. Then when her innocence was proven and evidence came to light of the gross mistreatment of a civilian of the city, she became a victim and witness as the King and Alpha worked to understand the situation fully. Finally she ended her time in the dominion as a widow and a mourner as last wills were attended to.Â
Nothing of Maxwellâs in Coviare was left to her but numerous accounts and estates in Europe were revealed to be in her name. This was for the purposes of their escape after she was turned but they remained hers even when Maxwellâs plans failed.
Meanwhile everything of her brothers was left to her. His accounts, his estate which she sold to the city. She didnât want to live in that house, haunted by her brothers death.Â
The Dominion and herself shared the income of money as theyâd lost a master with Nephilâs death but with everything Seraphina had come out of this very well off and with the success Maxwell had given her in Europe she was likely to stay that way as well. Which meant she didnât need a patron financially. Even though the financial books reassured her, she still felt a panic about not having a patron. One of the left over bits of compulsion.
Sheâd have no way of knowing what of her mind was compelled and what wasnât. Though it was revealed Maxwell used shoddy work when controlling her she would never know what would fade with time and what would become a permanent part of her. She could never trust her own mind again.
Which is why she was so distant in the whole process, with exception when in the presence of the King or Alpha. She wasnât sure how she felt, or if she felt anything. She mourned her brother, she mourned her fiance. She hated both for being the cause of the others death. And Mason⊠though he survived she both hated and loved him equally. Heâd left the city the moment he was released and Seraphina was abandoned to deal with funeral arrangements and such alone.
She refused to involve her family in the funeral process. Not even an empty coffin in his name would be laid to rest in their terrible hometown. Her family didnât argue. Though put out that their sons wealth would not touch them, they would go on as though he was still traveling the world until he faded out of existence.Â
They tried to convince Seraphina not to condemn herself to the same fate. They wanted her to return home as they rebuilt what theyâd lost but she refused. Hating them as much as she always had, especially her mother who seemed relieved that her dirty little secret would die in the basement of their home.
The funerals were quick and nothing to bat an eyelash at. Death was far too common in this city.
Having dealt with her past she had one more question. Would she stay in the city or leave for Europe? The decision was difficult and left unmade as she finally left the Dominion. Sheâd paid for another year as a civilian in the city but she still remained unsure if sheâd last the year or move far away.
With her citizenship renewed and a new home purchased in town, Seraphina entered the streets of the city for the first time as a free citizen again. She was much thinner, paler and her eyes showed the signs of trauma and abuse. She was an entirely new person, foreign and strange. She walked on fragile legs to her new home where only one unchanged thing waited for her⊠paint.
Eyes lined with charcoal,
Hands painted with blood.
Left to mourn the wars of men,
Who thinks of Helen now?
Would the dead care
if the beauty they fought to protect
died with them?
Would the dead know
that the beauty they fought to conquer
remained theirs?
Can the dead see
how theyâve veiled her in black
and ruined her soul
Would the dead rage
to know poor Helen is damned
in the stories they told
Lips red and worried,
Neck bruised and scared.
Left to love and hate dead men,
How can one live on without a heart?
Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice.
From what Iâve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice Is also great
And would suffice.Â

âItâs going to be just the two of us Seraphina. We will be on the run and canât have any baggage.â Her eyes went wide as she understood what her patron was saying but he continued speaking, his lips pressing against her neck just below her hear while two vampires and a wolf looked on.
âYour brother and your family upstairs, theyâre a danger to us. We have to end them. Your first taste of blood as a vampire should be your own,â he finished, pressing a kiss to her neck. She shivered, hating the feeling no matter how much her mind screamed. Her world spun and she felt like she might be sick. Not just because of what he was asking her to do, but because of the loud incessant voice screaming âYou Love Himâ as though it were reason enough to do the unthinkable, blasting the repetition to drown out her own thoughts.
Her eyes shut in pain from the loudness in her mind and whimpers began to involuntarily slip from her mouth as she endured hell.
She could feel his teeth elongating against her skin but when they make the sickening sound of breaking flesh it wasnât her own. She opened her eyes to see the looks of horror on three sets of eyes and then a bloody wrist was pressed to her lips. Seraphina struggled against it but Maxwell held her so tightly in place. She could taste the metallic tang of blood filling her mouth, eventually making it down her throat.Â
When Maxwell removed his wrist Seraphina resurfaced with sputtering coughs. She wanted to wipe the blood away but Maxwellâs next move had her frozen in place with fear. A blade was pulled from Maxwellâs coat and the tip was placed over her heart. Seraphina let out a small whimper of fear which had each of their witnesses taking a step closer.
âDonât!â cried Max and the tip of the sharp blade was pressed into her skin. It broke the skin and even though it only allowed a trickle of blood to roll across her flesh, it hurt and she cried out for that pain. Each witness stopped at her small scream.
âShe will be mine. Nothing can stop me. She is already mine. My artist, my fiance, and soon my own blood.â He sounded manic and Seraphina was filled with the dread that she would soon be made a vampire and ripped away from everything she cared about. The shackles of her mind were displacing in this madness and she could see clearly that she didnât want this. She didnât want Maxwell no matter how much her mind begged to differ her heart was not there. She didnât want to be taken by him. She didnât want this!
âI will be her-â Maxwell stopped mid sentence as a blur moved towards them, and when everything stilled, the blade that had been pointed at her chest was buried in Maxwellâs shoulder while his hand held a dark red dripping mass rather than
Seraphina. No longer in his arms Seraphina fell to the floor with a scream as Markusâ dead body did the same. Maxwell held his heart like a trophy.Â
Mason matched her screams as he watched his Grandsire bleed out on the floor. âYou son of a bitch!â he cried and Maxwell answered him with manic laughter. Seraphina used their exchange to back up until her back hit the cage behind her. Michael moved within his cage as though to get closer to her. She was startled for a moment but met her brothers eyes. There was darkness and fury but also agonizing fear. Fear for her. In that moment she felt their years of connection between them, she had to stop this. Before Maxwell took away everything she loved. Michael wasnât a match for Maxwell, nor was Mason, but together⊠As she kept her eyes locked with her brothers, her hand moved without her minds say so and slowly unlatched the cage door.
In a lightning quick move Michael and his chains bolted from the cage. He seems to gain a little more strength in his freedom and so he fought against his bindings. Mason helped him in a flash and just as the chains slide from his burning skin a battle broke out. Maxwellâs rage propelled him against his enemies and from that moment on Seraphinaâs heart laid on the line.
Two against one and still Maxwell was holding his own. It was so fast though that Seraphina really couldnât tell. Like a tornado of destruction they moved through the basement, destroying what little was in there. There was so much wreckage no one noticed the wine bottles breaking over the wrecked furnace, splashing over the pilot light, until the boxes and wreckage beside it were in flames. The fire kept burning and all Seraphina could to was press herself as close to the wall as she could, watching all three of the men she loved battle for her life.
She screamed as the danger drifted closer and closer to her. She couldnât see much but she could see two of the vicious monsters were losing. She had to stop this. She had to make them all stop!! She looked around for something, anything to help her when her eyes landed on the discarded blade that was meant for her heart. She picked it up and without thought dragged the shinning metal across the skin of her arm. Blood moved down her arm and all the supernatural beings stopped as the smell hit them.
The smell of her blood in the air reminded Maxwell of his purpose. He surged towards her, pinning her down on the ground, teeth snapping at her neck. Each of the boys did their best to hold him back as he tried to rip out her throat. Seraphinaâs terrified screams scraped up her throat as she struggled beneath him. It felt like this was the end for the end but then a miracle⊠a coating of blood splattered across her and the sickening sound of Maxwellâs head being severed from his body.Â
Seraphina felt all the heat in her body drain from her. Although she knew sheâd been saved, the screaming voices in her mind raged against the death of her patron. They cried with a fury sheâd never seen or heard before and the pain that radiated through her body was immeasurable. She couldnât move, everything inside her was in agony even as the other two men she loved were striding towards her and helped her up. She couldnât breathe. She couldnât move. Tears filled her eyes as a weight that had bared itself on her for months crashed down and made itself permanent.
She was dizzy from her own thoughts and the pain her body suffered because of it. Both boys held her thinned frame up⊠until the ceiling cracked and floorboards clattered to the floor narrowly missing her.Â
Mason only just pulled her out of the way. The flaming pieces now separated the Frost siblings. âMichael!â Seraphina called loudly. The agony she felt was pushed aside as her brother now faced his own danger. She reached for him and he reached back but another flaming piece of wood had them pulling their hands away. The fire that had begun during the fight was now consuming everything around it with greed. No⊠No! They were done! Theyâd won! They could go home and this would be all over. The danger was over and yet Michael looked back at her as though this were goodbye.Â
âNo, NO! Michael!â Seraphina reached out with more fever. She was ready to charge into the flames and Mason had to hold her back. âMichael, MICHAEL!â She cried and struggled against the vampires arms.Â
Noooooo, she reached out her hand and the beam and supporting floor came down between them. Her last sight was her brothers desperate blue eyes and then the burning of her home.
âNoooooo! Michael! MICHAEL!â She fought with more determination, trying to get back to her brother. She couldnât see him through the flames and damage but just knowing he was on the other side had her ready to propel through them.
âSera, Sera stop!â Mason spoke over the now roaring sounds of the flames. âWe have to get out of here.â She continued her cries of protest but Mason hauled her over to the stairs and dragged her up them. In a second she was engulfed by smoke, inhaling the grey fog deeply in her panic⊠and then she wasnât. Mason dropped her on her front lawn and zipped back into the house.Â
Seraphina was a coughing mess as she waited in the fresh coating of snow. She didnât feel the cold against her palms and knees as her lungs hacked up the toxins in favour of fresh air. Soon her sister was on the lawn, then her mother and soon father. Mason zipped back inside but after a longer moment away he came out coughing as well without her brother.Â
âNo! NoooâŠâ She watched the flames consume her home but didnât care. She got to her feet and ran for the house but Mason caught her by the waist and no matter how much she fought she wasnât getting into that house. But she had to find her brother! She had to get him out! She⊠she had toâŠ
Her knees gave in and she watched as her home was made into a bright torch. The world slipped away from her and she saw nothing past the tears, felt nothing past the emptiness that consumed her from the inside.
Her world had ended. Both her and her brother had been lost in those flames.

âIâm sorry,â she mumbled. Mika didnât like that she had made her friend feel bad, even if it was indirectly. "Y-yes, well perhaps Iâll see you again soon.â Mika offered Seraphina a tiny smile before turning around and walking away.Â
Seraphina watched her friend walk away, and hated herself all the more for it.
âYouâre engaged? How delightful!â Iris couldnât remember if sheâd ever been marriedâor engaged. She remembered lovers, and she remembered, vaguely, babies too. But she wasnât sure if she actually ever had babies, had a family, had a husband. Maybe they were just dreams. âYouâll have to tell me everything about the wedding when weâre at dinner! Lead the way! Bride first!â
âIt is,â she agreed without any of the typical bridal excitement and the smile she offered was short lived.
âAlright, but thereâs not much to tell. Weâve decided very little since the engagement is still pretty new.â She lead the way to her usual restaurant and upon walking in the host made a small nod and Seraphina knew her usual table was being set.
