The history of strightjackets being used to hold mentally disabled/ill people sounds horribly ableist to me, and seeing it used in music videos and edgy artwork just kinda icks me… I’d rather it only be used in magic tricks…

Something to keep in mind about the shirt is: The designs were made individually, someone else combined Lucifer and Alastor and they only did it cause it was a popular ship. There was no inherent power/racial dynamic.

I've been talking about my concern around negative mental illness stereotypes, and my stance is that they effect people universally.
Wanted to say I'm sorry you're getting so much hate for voicing an opinion and trying to advocate for a marginalised group in the fandom. It's not right. You aren't responsible for other people's actions, if they did take your post and started harassing the artist/others, that isn't your fault. It's whomever has taken a message of advocacy and twisted it to excuse their anger and justify harassment, which isn't on you.

Hey I've seen that you've gotten a lot of negative stuff around the post you made criticizing the recent Hazbin merch, so I wanted to send in something positive. I agree with you. I wouldn't consider myself an easily offended kind of guy, but it certainly gave me pause, and it weirded me out that the fandom jumped on it so fast. I am quite regularly annoyed with the fandom's desire to pin the more heinous actions of characters on a mental illness. It does nothing to excuse it and everything to add to stigma. I have a number of conditions which I don't like to discuss because the stereotypes are frustrating. Not in the direction of people taking me as dangerous, but often in the opposite direction, where people treat it as indicative that I am soft or easily broken. I'm a prideful bastard with a control obsession and a fight response, both of which have helped me survive, I'm not a fuckin "traumatized softboi" for you to coo at and pity. Shit's annoying and I can say it here because it's anonymous lol.
Anyway, I digress. I've seen a lot of the fanart with the straitjacket and shit and it just rubbed me the wrong way. I don't like this fandom's tendency to pin character flaws on mental illness as it is, but proceeding to then make a joke of that perception of "craziness" that you've decided to attach to this guy who's a bad person and draw on existing stereotypes of "dangerous crazy people" who are mentally unstable is too damn much to pass off as just ignorance. At a certain point I think you just damn near fetishize mental illness as part of your "oh it's a taboo fantasy" thing, whilst failing to recognize that this stuff affects actual people who are doing their best to get by with problems that make their lives harder. You're 100% in the right to call it out and I'm glad you did. All the people throwing tantrums at you because you had the audacity to say anything vaguely critical of their favorite piece of media can fuck right off. I respect you for saying something about it and I hope you have an absolutely amazing day.

Hmm I didn’t know this was a thing with the straight jacket. TBH I haven’t seen anyone use it as a negative, and only associate it with Hannibal Lecter as a crazy killer.. no mask needed when something is that well known, from the film. But I’m curious where you draw the line here?? In the fandom there’s one ship that almost exclusively draws art that includes some sort of violation. The art is mostly dub or non con. And I’ve seen people speak out about how uncomfortable it makes them because of real life trauma. And do you know what they are told by the artists? It’s just creation. It’s not real, and only art. Meanwhile it’s celebrated within the ship, even encouraged. And it’s okay because it’s not real. Even though a character they claim to love has repeatedly expressed his disgust with the other character, and has been SA’d by them in canon, multiple times. So which is it? Where is the line? Because personally I would much rather see art of Alastor in a straight jacket.. than see him being forced into an abusive violating relationship. But it’s okay… because it’s just “art” Even though there is a huge majority of this fandom who have gone through real life abuse 🤔 So, why isn’t Alastor in a straight jacket just art and creative expression? Why is that crossing the line, and g*rape is expression? If we are ignoring negative vs. positive representation and justification for one, it applies to the other. We can’t have it both ways.

I draw the line at it being on a official t-shirt made by major highstreet retailer - it is setting a 'standard' and telling the fans 'this is ok' and young people not even understanding what they are looking at, too many people saying they dont know history of the straitjacket
Straightjacket fetish fanart belongs in the same place the bondage/medical malpactrice kink stuff goes. People who are into that can look for it and have context and typically know its not right
It's unsettling to see it normalised, and normalised without being questioned
This also affects a minority group that typically stay silent
Also if we are talking about tumblr people tend to tag ships and tags can be hidden and filtered. When people don't tag ships they are usually swiftly corrected
There is an issue with Hazbin straitjacket stuff not being tagged it would be helpful to agree on a tagging system

The straitjacket is (unfortunately) universally recognised as a symbol for mental illness
Alastor in the straitjacket implies being dangerous and violent is synomonous with being mentally ill
This perpetuate a negative stereotype and stigma that the mentally ill are violent and dangerous and need to be in a straitjacket
Even in circumstances of becoming violent and dangerous the straitjacket is cruel

Its a upsetting image to put on an mainstream official t-shirt for many. It being official sets a standard to many that 'this is acceptable' there are young fans telling me they dont even know the history of the straitjacket.
The fanart doesn't matter so much because it is niche content people have to seek out
