They think they're doing the right thing, and they have good reasons to believe and do the things they do. They're not extremists or single-minded to the point of thinking the ends always justify the means.

To me, they both want to be helpful... need to be helpful. Useful. Fix whatever the problem before them is.

Legs needs to make up for his sins, take on the burdens of others because it's a punishment he deserves.

Louis needs to prove he's valuable. Take on the weight of everything around him and hold it high so he can earn his place in this world.

And they would both look at each other and see a reflection of themselves they don't want to look at. Someone who is gentle with everyone but themselves, a desperate need to push themselves to the edge because otherwise they don't deserve the joy and softness.

But at the same time... maybe if they could help the other...

The real problems start when the other refuses their help. Won't let them be helpful, useful, fix the problem, like they need to do... Everyone deserves help, except for themselves.
