When you realize that your crush is a fucking dork

the wildly expensive nature of textbooks, research papers, & knowledge in general? it sucks! i don’t want to pay a lot of additional money for an already costly education, & i believe that others shouldn’t have to either. with that in mind, i set up a mini digital library in google drive to distribute to my classmates & use as a personal resource. this guide below will help you get started in doing the same!

1. find the reading list. i started with the required introductory freshman course at my school, & then branched out to the other classes that i’m taking. however, if you know what classes are popular or required, you can locate the reading lists for those as well.

2. get the ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers) for each title. some schools try to hide these from you to make you buy from their provider :/ but with research online or a trip to the bookstore, you can make sure you have the correct edition when you get it online. this is important because academic institutions are notorious for making changes between editions for the express purpose of rendering past editions obsolete.

3. grab the pdfs. there are sites where you can get pretty much anything for free if you know where to look. libgen, a.k.a. library genesis, has TONS of books, including textbooks; it is my starting point for finding any book. sci-hub helps un-paywall scientific research papers & other things. project gutenberg has a great selection of literature (you can convert the ebooks to pdfs HERE). use the ISBNs to download your textbooks & etc.! i have more info on getting pdfs HERE, although it’s mainly focused on leftist readings.

4. make a place to store the pdfs. i set up a semi-anonymous google drive (i.e. one not under my legal name, just in case). then i created a folder with a clear label, & wrote a short note about why i did this plus a list of all titles in the folder. however, you can host them in whichever manner you’d like.

5. distribute the knowledge. i dropped the link to the drive folder in several group chats i’m in with classmates, & i encouraged them to spread it to their friends too. if you’re ballsy you can forward the link to the mailing list of all students in the classes you have books for. tell people about library genesis, too, so they can do this themselves if they want. basically, share as much as you safely can.
