                  eyebrows raise questioningly        at the party — a                   lanky teenager,        a younger, chubbier boy, and                   a bluebird. it was almost laughable.   it sounded                   like the beginning of a joke.   a lanky teenager, a                   chubbier kid, and a bluebird walk into a forest —

it would a blatant lie to say that the thought had occurred to the boy earlier ;    the atmospheric edge of halloween assured that anything initially outlandish about both wirt & his brother, would be accepted as normalcy. beatrice, the talking bird ( strange in concept ), quickly adapted to this skewed perception,   with the eventual realization -- that there were far       more atypical things waiting amidst the wood. 

                        ( buuuuut preoccupied works as a better excuse. )
