Seen Strange Things

The Doctor shook his head, a smile still ghosting on his lips. “No, not quite business either. But yes, it’s one of my favorite places to see, London. Always feels familiar.” He paused then, plotting out exactly how he was to say where he was from. “I’m from somewhere called Gallifrey. It was a lovely place, too.” 

"I’m glad to hear it, Doctor!" A pause, then: "Gallifrey? I’m sorry to say I’ve not heard of it before. Where is it, if you’ll forgive my ignorance?" He had caught the Doctor’s odd use of was, and wondered at it, but made no comment. “A sight less rainy than London, I hope.”

          “He, naturally, is all convention,” the doctor returns disdainfully. “If ever I truly knew a man who existed entirely without original thought, it is Dr. Lanyon. He is a fine enough fellow, certainly, and I don’t mean to disregard him on all points — I don’t mean to do that in the least — but in matters of science and of religion, he is quite insufferable. He absorbs the opinions of those before him and regurgitates those views all but verbatim when prompted for his own opinion. I do not believe that he has even read a word of Darwin’s work, Poole; I truly don’t believe that he has." In the course of his tangent, he seems to have quite forgotten Poole’s direct question.

Rather amused at his master's rambling, Poole suppresses a smile.  "Is that so, sir? Certainly the debates between you ought to encourage him to reconsider his opinions. How do you stand on Darwin's theories, yourself, Master?"

At that, the Doctor outright laughed, and rather loudly, too. It took him a while to stop laughing, in fact. When he did, he patted Poole gently, and sighed. “I don’t live here, Poole. I’m just, passing through, as it were. Though, I do visit often.”

"I meant to say, sir, Mr. Utterson stopped by while you were out today."

          ❝Oh? Well, what was his business?❞

"He wouldn't say, sir. He only asked me to tell you he wishes to speak with you."
