Past Space - Why Interstellar is About More Than Just Space
The Film Interstellar was released in 2014 and is pictured by the public as a scientific movie often exploring the mysteries of the universe along with futuristic technology needed to survive the unsure future for survival on earth. As much as this is what people perceive of the movie, I believe that the movie is deeper than what it may be at the surface. What makes Interstellar resonate with me deeply is not only the fascinating science depicted; but is the emotions created through the characters and feelings that lie at the movieâs core. It is the values of love, sacrifice, fatherhood, forgiveness, and the unpredictable future of human survival, especially shown through the main character Cooperâs relationship with his daughter Murphy, that makes up Christoher Nolanâs movie not just a sci-fi story, but a deep emotional work.
I chose this topic since it reflects with me most through the exploration of the themes of human struggle. Balancing the ambition that Cooper wants to establish along with but is also challenged by, through duty, and love. These themes mirror important moments in all of our lives, and remain significant in the current worldâs context, as people today continue to face sacrifices in pursuit of success, and care of others. It applies to life for the reason that it highlights emotional cost above any decisions that may seem superficial, such as leaving family for the sake of saving them. Interstellar uses themes of sacrifice and fatherhood to create a sense that survival not only depends on physical endurance that the main character Cooper endures, but more on emotional connections that are woven, from the will of giving up personal comfort for the well being of others.
