The nightmares have progressed to night terrors now. Ciel Phantomhive’s body will wake up, bolt upright in bed, though he remains trapped in the confines of the unspeakable horrors his mind conjures behind his closed eyes.

The flavor this terror adds to his soul is so delectable, Sebastian is drawn to his side each time, if only to inhale the delightful perfume of it.

Ciel reaches out in his delirium, groping for and gripping onto Sebastian’s lapels. “Please,” he begs.

Sebastian almost thinks he is awake until he sees Ciel’s eyes moving frantically beneath his closed eyelids. “Please what, young master?” he asks, not certain he’ll get a response. He moves to brush Ciel’s hair back from his face but the boy flinches and Sebastian catches the cold sheen of sweat on his brow.

“Kill me. Please. Make it stop,” Ciel continues, though it sounds more like he hasn’t heard Sebastian. “I want it to end, please.” His tone is haunted, gaunt and thin, nothing like the haughty, regal tone he speaks with while awake.

“I cannot consume your soul until the contract is complete, young master, you know that.”

“It hurts. Everything hurts,” the words tumble out as though trying to escape the terror of his mind themselves. “I want to die,” still he speaks as if to someone not in the room.

That exact wording is new. It takes Sebastian by surprise. He pushes Ciel back down into the pillows, holding his hand over the boy’s eyes.

“Sebastian,” he murmurs frantically, eyes still tightly shut, “Sebastian, please. I want to die.”

“Hush, my Lord. Now is not the time,” Sebastian smooths his hand across Ciel’s face, pulling the night terror from his mind. “It will come soon enough. I promise, I will be by your side until the end.”

Ciel seems to still after that, seems to sleep so soundly as if dead.

It wasn’t the pain but more so the annoying insistent buzzing of the machines that had Sebastian waking. He opened his eyes, groggily looking back and forth as the scent of iodoform and latex had his nose wrinkling. He sat up slowly, unhooking his finger from the pulse ox clip connected to a heart rate monitor, the blankets on his chest falling down onto his hospital bed. A few dark locks fell in front of his face, his hand coming up to brush them back before he stopped to view the bandages. 

His left hand was wrapped tight with white gauze, giving way to his fingers and his forearm. Sebastian clenched his fist, feeling the sting of the injury on the back of it. He sighed, relaxing against the foam mattress and closing his eyes. He tried desperately to recall the events that led him to the small, quiet hospital room at what seemed to be the dark hours of early morning. A light knock had his eyes reopening before the door clicked open, a soft voice speaking up before a small boy dressed in all white quickly slipped into the room.

“Rise and shine, Mr. Michaelis.”
