something else i find interesting is the herding style in some of these dogs. the above are all European working line aussies.

contrast with the ASCA working description:

#these all happen to be from europe but i'm not really sure if a similar trend exists in NA #haven't seen it but then i also haven't been looking for it

#yes this is an oversimplification #and yes there's sampling bias at play #i have no doubt these are all fantastic dogs who are great at their jobs etc.#but let's just say #aesthetically i have my preference

#i feel i haven’t bitched about anything in a minute. so here goes.#i don’t get how working line aussies in the us often look really really nice #(not always but. often)#and then working lines in europe look so ugly #(also not always of course but. you get it.)#where is the disconnect? the show lines we have here vary somewhat but there’s plenty of nice looking dogs #and a lot of us imports or pedigrees with imports only a few generations back #are the working line people just doing their own thing and not importing anymore?#how have their dogs come to no longer resemble either the show lines or the us working lines?#they’re fine boned and flewy and have these long backs and awful earsets #i don’t get it #oh! and don’t get me started on us bybs #i’ll see some random post showing the most beautiful aussie ever #like a dog that could be put in the illustrated standard or something #so i’ll ask the op what lines their dog is from #and they’ll answer ‘‘oh i don’t know i just got him from the guy down the street :)’’#bitch. i would kill to have what you have (well with the addition of multi-generational health testing and such)

irbe at her first ever rally obedience competition / 📸

#10 months #golden retriever #rally obedience #look how pretty our little irbe is growing up to be!!! she got many compliments :)#and all the photos are so nice #i especially love that last one <3 #we placed 2nd with 96% and 88% and i was quite happy with our performance #for a young dog with very little experience i think irbe did a great job mostly staying focused #and i was happy to note that i didn't feel as stressed as i used to in past trials #although i also didn't feel quite as grounded and mentally present as i would ultimately like to be #before i'd consider trialing kaija again #still - it's progress.#also irbe was such a pleasure just to be there with #she is so perfectly stable and friendly/neutral with everything and everyone #being able to just leave her wherever and not having to worry that she might get stressed by it or get into trouble #truly what a good little dog :')#(well then just to put a damper on things i guess #i went to chat with our instructor after the trial #and that wasn't great.#she had some critiques #stuff like #''if i didn't know you i would say your run looked good and your team has good potential #but i do know you for long enough and well enough that ...''#so. that was a little bit painful to listen to.#i'm not really sure why such personal critiques were necessary #but you know)

#this thesis is making me hate myself #i really enjoyed these past two years of doing my masters #in a large part because i was unemployed for the majority of it and just kinda fucking around #but also simply because it's interesting having new subjects each term and doing something different all the time #i liked it #but jfc is the thesis writing that comes with all that fucking miserable #next year they're supposedly planning to do away with it as a compulsory thing #so you'd be able to either publish an actual research paper or write a big final exam instead if you choose to do so #and let me tell you #i am so gd good at writing exams #i would obliterate that big final #but that's only starting next year (and only supposedly)#and i super profoundly don't want to wait another year especially when i have like half my thesis done already #why do i find this one part so damn hard :(

i laughed before but having now gotten to this point in the class. yeah.

#it really is such a difficult task to keep your feelings separate when working on something like opt-out stations #yes i understand that the whole point of these 3 weeks has been to give my dog a way to say no and the confidence to do so if she needs to #no i can't help but feel stung when that means she leaves me mid-session #but oh what interesting work this is #the insights it gives you about your dog and about your training #it is fascinating to me #(...i shudder to think what our rally instructor would have to say about this lol #'permissive' doesn't begin to cover it #but it's fun! it hurts and it's forcing me to be very honest about my training and my relationship with my dog #and yet still i think it's fun!!!)

have the people who expect me to submit my masters thesis in like two weeks considered that maybe i’d rather be doing dog training stuff instead

what's this about a new virus(?) affecting dogs in Europe?

#supposedly russian import dobermans are dying of something but testing negative for all the usual stuff #and dobe speciality in Serbia has been cancelled as a precaution #one puppy in the UK tested positive for adenovirus and a necropsy in Serbia showed lepto #so some people think it's a nasty combo of the two #although other affected dogs tested negative for both of those so idk

love to see this on a class syllabus 👌
