this is a personal piece I’ve been meaning to do based off my own experiences rping as TFP Starscream in the TF fandom

something I’ve encountered with disturbing frequency is how often other characters try to insult this (and my) incarnation of Starscream because he ‘looks like a femme’, and they use femme as something almost derogatory

femmes exist (from a marketing standpoint, anyway) as a way to present the biological female gender to children as giant transforming robots, with the intention of the characters being perceived as women so that little—and grown—girls have someone more easy to relate to (in their minds)

they are literally meant, from that perspective, to be women, and are drawn and voiced and portrayed to “act” like biological women, in all the ways that can be taken as traditionally feminine

so why the fuck would you use it as an insult

it just really pissed me off, because what’s wrong with it? what’s wrong if Starscream looks or acts like a femme? what exactly is the issue here? several other rpers that I interacted with had done this to my Starscream in particular, and only one saw fit to apologize after I pointed out how completely sexist and backwards their thinking was, especially after they tried to justify that it was “just how their character would act”

why would a race that is supposed to not have a real concept of gender and therefore sexist nuances use a frametype’s name like a sexist insult

so since then I said fuck it and I made it canon to my blog that he has a femme frame type and considers being called a femme a huge compliment because femmes are hella rad, and because the world can suck my dick
