My hot take I'm really passionate about right now is refusing to engage with a piece of media for the sole reason that you believe the artist is problematic is denying yourself the right to read and think critically and perpetuates the media literacy crisis we are stuck in right now.
There are no artists you will align with ideologically 100% of the time. Dismissing their work because you dont align with them ideologically is doing yourself a disservice. We don't form new opinions and new worldviews based only in media we agree with. We must also experience media that is nuanced, media that makes us uncomfortable, and perspectives that challenge us in order to flesh out our worldview.
And most importantly, you cannot teach literacy and critical thinking skills if you refuse to participate in critical thinking excersizes yourself because it makes you uncomfortable.
Also its a dangerous gateway from "this artist is problematic so im not going to engage with them" to "i HEARD that this artist is problematic so im not going to engage with them" which rapidly transfers all of your power around your experience of the world and other people's perspectives into the hands of whoever wants to tell you someone is problematic.
Tl;dr. Engage with things that make you uncomfortable. Analyze the fact that it makes you uncomfortable. Allow media, and artists, and people generally to be nuanced and grey.
Idk how literally any of you read the ballad of songbirds and snakes and came out of it *liking* Snow. This man is psycho from the get go.

I'm 7
I ask my brother to have a sleep over
He brings his blanket and his stuffie to my bed
We laugh until our stomachs hurt
And fall asleep sucking our thumbs still
I'm 15
I ask my brother for a sleep over
We make snacks and stay up listening to music
We talk about life and love and the way it all hurts
I bring my blanket to his bed
I'm 22
I ask my brother for a sleep over
The drive is too long now
He has to work early tomorrow
Maybe next week
But maybe not
Because I have too many cats now
And he has a bed all his own
And there's not enough time in the world
To talk about all the things that hurt
But maybe next week we'll try
*spoilers* tyrants tomb
WHAT DO YOU MEAN JASON IS BURIED WITHOUT THALIA THERE
AND THALIA DOESNT EVEN GET TO KNOW THAT HES DEAD
AND NOONE CAN REACH HER TO TELL HER AND NO ONE KNOWS HOW SHE WILL FIND OUT OR WHEN AND SHE CANT BURY HER BROTHER PROPERLY
yall I am literally doing my best not to totally fall apart this is devastating I'm so sad and angry
You can't separate the art from the author. You can't. Those biases will always be found within the text and subtext of a work. But when we talk about separating the art from the author especially with things like JK Rowling I think it's really important to address the ways that just writing off an author or a work completely and never touching it actually harms people's acquisition of critical reading and thinking skills.
Let's say that instead of talking about Harry Potter we're talking about Huckleberry Fin, or Tom Sawyer, or The Lord Of The Flies. These are works that we have decided as a culture are important to teach to our children. And we teach them through the lens they were written through. When teaching teenagers about these classic works we don't say "Mark Twain had these problematic beliefs and so we're never going to finish this book" instead we say "Mark Twain had these problematic beliefs. Let's pick through the ways they affect the story and the text. Show me the bias he is presenting here. Let's look at the multiple potential meanings of this work while I guide you to the ones that are more in line with the morals I believe you should pull from it and allow you to find the morals you will take into your life with you." With Lord Of The Flies we don't say "this is a bad book with biases so we shouldn't read it" we teach kids "This person felt this way about how girls and boys interact and that's outdated information and also just his personal opinion but on a deeper layer Let's look at how that affects the story and what he is trying to say about human nature and society. Do we think he's wrong? Do we think he's right? Do we think humans are inherently violent like he does?" That is how we teach children and teenagers and even adults to sift through information and come to their own conclusions. This is how we teach people to think for themselves and identify bias in writing. Ultimately this is how you train your brain to form its own opinions.
So let's talk about Harry potter and JK Rowling. JK Rowling has beliefs that are truly detrimental to herself to society and to progression of freedom world wide but especially in the UK. That's horrible. There is no excuse for the way that she feels about things. And it is evident in her writing. I have only read the Harry Potter series by her but off the top of my head I can list several things I know are in her writing that I don't agree with. Here's my basic list (I will definitely have missed things):
• Centaurs are described with characteristics similar to native Americans. Theya re then presented as being violent, unpredictable, and a danger to women and children.
• Goblins are extreme caricature stereotypes of Jewish people who are then presented as being selfish, money driven, unpredictable, egocentric, secretive, and arrogant.
• The stairs to the girls dormitories do not allow boys in. Which not only trampled the ide of Trans or nonbinary students but also screams "boys can't be assaulted by girls"
• House elves. I don't feel like i really need to expand on this one. We all know...
• The way fleur is treated in the books is gross. The feminist "icons" of the series are incredibly mean to her simply because she is pretty and talented. It creates and underlying agression toward successful women for being pretty and successful.
• Lycanthropy should have been left alone no one needed that essay on how it's actually an allegory for Aids which then frames Greyback as an adult gay man preying on young children (Remus is 4 years old canonically when Greyback breaks into his bedroom and attacks him. Disgusting with a new lgbt connotation) also the treatment of lycanthropy in the books shows a clear misunderstanding of the actual impact of the Aids epidemic on the lgbt community.
Like I said, just to name a few. Now despite all of these things I truly love the story. You cannot remove these beliefs from it. But I would argue that rather than completely writing it off it's actually very important that we read the books through the lens of knowing these beliefs. That we point them out, pick them apart, show the ways they affect the writing. Point out the ways that those beliefs are wrong and harmful. Just as we would with any classic work. There are valuable lessons in Harry Potter. Ultimately it is a story about found family and love conquering all. It is a story of bravery and hope for a better more accepting world where you are not defined based on your blood status, physical characteristics you can't control, and traumas of your past. This is why in its way day Harry Potter was so popular with LGBT and "alternative" kids. It is important that we guide that understanding of the books through the lens of understanding the author doesn't feel that way.
When we completely write off the books and remove them from our lives, our children's lives, ridicule people for reading and enjoying them we actually remove an opportunity to develop better critical thinking and reading skills. We remove an opportunity to teach or practice bias identification in writing. But most of all we remove people's ability to come to their own conclusions about the true moral of the story.
Ans while I'm on my trials of Apollo soap box here this is some incredibly detailed and intimate understandings of parental abuse and coming to terms with it so let's talk about Meg and Apollo yall.
We're a little heavy handed with the "Beast" metaphor around Nero for sure and I don't want to pretend that like normal parental abuse comes into play in a "I'll change form into a evil being to harm you if you mess up but that entity is totally separate from me" way but it also sort of does and Apollo puts it into perfect perspective when he says "my dad used to do that too by saying don't make me punish you"
Abusive parents absolutely do use this 2 entities mentality all the time. It's we can have fun and play and laugh and then oh you stepped over my line that was either unspoken or too hard to reach anyways now you have caused me to be the angry version of me that disproportionately punishes you. It's your fault I'm like this. If you were better or quieter or easier to take care of we could always be happy and have fun.
And then there's 3 whole books worth of Meg coming to terms with the fact that what happened to her was not okay and she doesn't wake up one day and it all crashes down on her. Little by little she learns a different type of love and care and slowly detaches from Nero instead. And finds a scapegoat for her anger along the way instead (Caligula) who is only a black and white villain to her and she can hate without feeling guilty which is an incredibly real way that that trauma is processed.
Spoiler alert
I actually cannot imagine the crushing guilt Piper is feeling right now. Still loving Jason and leaving him to find herself, trying to prioritize herself within her new identity of being a full person instead of a puppet for Hera or Jason's Girlfriend or Aphrodites Daughter. And then watching Jason die to save her because he never stopped loving her either. Watching Jason die the way Jason was always meant to die, as a hero saving his friends and furthering a quest to save the world. Knowing that it was going to happen beforehand but being so certain she would be the one sacrificing herself. And now he's gone and there's so much left unsaid between them. And there's no more doors of death hanging open. And the physicians cure has been used for the last time. And the healer god is a normal mortal. And caligula is still alive. And there is nothing, absolutely nothing that can be done. And those things will always be unsaid.

The think the universe was expanding into was the multiverse and you could track the choices made and things happening that chose which multiverses the universe expanded into
“Nobody’s going to want to sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours to get from New York City to LA.”
Me. I will sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours. I’ll sit on it for days. I’ll write and read and nap and eat and then do it all over again. I’ll stare out the windows and see America from ground level and not have to drive. I’ll see the Rockies and the deserts and cornfields and the Mississippi River and your house and yours and yours too. I’ll make up stories in my head about the small towns I see as we go along. I’ll see the states I’ve yet to see because driving or flying there is a fucking slog and expensive to boot. I’ll enjoy the ride as much as the destination. And then I’ll do it all over again to come the fuck home.

Me realizing Jason Grace and Piper McLean are like a perfect golden retriever x black cat couple
Then realizing Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque are and even more stereotypical golden retriever x black cat
Then realizing Nico Di Angelo and Will Solace is maybe the epitome of golden retriever x black cat
Then realizing Rick has a CRAZY affinity for golden retriever x black cat relationships
we need to bring back this tweet now more than ever
