BuyPartisan is a new smartphone app which allows the user to scan any product with a bar code and immediately see the company’s political spending.

Increasingly, more companies are becoming transparent about their supply chain partners, views on religion and their employee satisfaction ratings. Now with BuyPartisan consumers can see which political parties are supported by brands and products. Simply scan a product and instantly get easy-to-read results showing political contributions divided into percentages for Republican, Democrat and Others. Additionally, the app breaks down the overall average into Contributor Categories including Board of Directors, CEO, PAC’s and Employees.

Some might question if people are willing/ready to base their purchasing decision on how much or little a product’s maker supports a certain political party. The app creator, Matthew Colbert believes people will appreciate having access to this type of information while standing in a grocery aisle. The BuyPartisan tagline states, “Wouldn’t it be great if you could spend how you believed?” That’s the message Colbert is hoping to share with his company Spend Consciously and the BuyPartisan app.

The news broke April 8th, 2014 that the #Heartbleed Bug had been discovered. Incredibly the bug enables hackers to steal information such as names, addresses, credit cards and so on, even if it is securely protected by a trusted SSL. Major industry websites have been affected including Yahoo user’s passwords.

It’s fun sometimes to look back at where Homo sapiens came from and how far we’ve come. In that journey toward the future, we’ve said goodbye to many items we never thought we could live without, like giant canine teeth and corsets. Others have hung on despite incredible odds, like tonsils and bamboo back scratchers.

Instead of dropping into nonexistence in the way of 8-track tapes and rotary dial phones, newsletters have refused to quit. Not only that – they have changed right along with us, as if to say, “Hey! Look what else I can do!” like a chimp playing the cymbals, the tambourine and a bass drum all at the same time.

The first newsletter reportedly made its appearance in 1538. But since most of you will never admit to being old enough to recall that far back, we can jump to the 1960s, when colored paper newsletters routinely fluttered through the air carrying diverse messages of protestations of war and music festival announcements. The people came and got them. There was no such thing as a newsletter being delivered to the door.

With the advent of the PC came the revelation, “Eureka!,” that we could reach potential customers through the World Wide Web, free of postage charges. The problem was, we were still delivering flat content in a dynamic world. Most of those early newsletters would never make it into a newsletter museum, much less an inbox, because they were so sleepinducing they went straight to virtual trash cans all over the world. (To this day, virtual landfills are overflowing with boring newsletters and city officials are confounded with what to do with them.)

Droves of  high profile companies continue to be exploited by hackers

We have long been an advocate of Kickstarter and so we thought it important to note to our friends and clients that Kickstarter has been hacked. If you have used their services or are currently doing so, please take a moment to read the letter below from Kickstarter: 

  A letter from Kickstarter:

On Wednesday night, law enforcement officials contacted Kickstarter and alerted us that hackers had sought and gained unauthorized access to some of our customers’ data. Upon learning this, we immediately closed the security breach and began strengthening security measures throughout the Kickstarter system.

No credit card data of any kind was accessed by hackers. There is no evidence of unauthorized activity of any kind on your account.

While no credit card data was accessed, some information about our customers was. Accessed information included usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords. Actual passwords were not revealed, however it is possible for a malicious person with enough computing power to guess and crack an encrypted password, particularly a weak or obvious one.

As a precaution, we strongly recommend that you change the password of your Kickstarter account, and other accounts where you use this password.

To change your password, log in to your account at Kickstarter.com and look for the banner at the top of the page to create a new, secure password. We recommend you do the same on other sites where you use this password. For additional help with password security, we recommend tools like 1Password and LastPass.

We’re incredibly sorry that this happened. We set a very high bar for how we serve our community, and this incident is frustrating and upsetting. We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months to come. We are working closely with law enforcement, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this from happening again.

As of about 2:18PM Eastern, many were seeing their Gmail services come back up, mostly. We use Google Apps for our mail services as well and although we are able to access our accounts, we are still having trouble sending through desktop applications. We are also seeing unusual errors in our WordPress installs that have Google analytics integration. Could Google be victim of an attack? Say it ain’t so! We sure hope not!

Google’s $3.2 Billion Nest Acquisition Could Prove to be Beneficial to Consumers, but at What Cost?

Google announced they will buy the business behind the smart thermostat and smoke detector, Nest, for $3.2 billion. The purchase was not only fueled by Nest’s easy-to-use energy saving products, but also by their focus on customer service, which is important to Google.

With Google’s procurement of Nest, it seems the home of the future is on the horizon. Simply walk into a room, and your Nest thermostat is already working to make you more comfortable. Wave your hand under your Nest smoke detector, and the gentle human voice is silenced.

Could these conveniences really be used to invade your privacy? Or could they make life better and easier?

Nest products are built in to your home’s infrastructure. Will Google then, in turn, be connected to your home? Data that would otherwise be private can potentially become accessible to markets other than Nest.

Nest product sensors know where you are in your home. They know when you’re home and when you’re not. It’s possible that this very valuable information could be shared with insurance companies, advertisers, and telemarketers. No one wants to feel like their every move has been turned into a live (involuntary) marketing survey.

On the other hand, the acquisition also leaves room for opportunities to improve the quality and convenience of Nest products. Smoke detectors can pinpoint the room where a fire started. A Google-connected home could share this information resulting in faster emergency response times.  A market for a smarter, more affordable home security system opens up. Measurements of energy use can potentially lower home insurance costs.These points, and more, can make Nest a more attractive, if not necessary, addition to the home of the very near future.

Businesses Beware of SocalGoogle SCAM!

We have been continuously getting these robo calls from this number 657-202-9009 saying they were Google. So we decided, since we are actually a Google Partner, that we would record our conversation if they ever call back. Well, they did and they not only had their recorded portion lie and say they were Google but when asked if they really were Google, they actually answered yes. We continued to hold as they “looked up something” and wouldn’t you know it, they hung up on us!

Beware of Yellow Pages .NET Listing Calls

Being an agency, we are contacted on a regular basis by 3rd party listing services wanting to have our clients subscribe to the services they offer. Unfortunately, because most are scams we are always suspicious of such calls and should we find out that a particular solicitation is a scam, we make it a habit of notifying our clients and doing our best to inform the general public so that they too can avoid such scams.

While reading the morning news online, we came across an article from USA Today titled “Six simple words could cost you hundreds”. After reading through the article, we found that a “company” posing as the Yellow Pages has created an elaborate scam where they actually call businesses and tell them they are updating their listings on the Yellow Pages .NET and ask that they simply verify the information they have on file. Then a few months go by and the business gets billed hundreds of dollars for the service.

When a business tries to dispute the service, the scammers then playback a recorded, spliced version of the conversation they had initially when asking the business to “update their information”. The spliced version makes appear as though the business is agreeing to pay for the subscription. The so-called subscription actually provided no valuable service to anyone which makes it even that much more despicable.

These days, there are just no limits for scammers trying to deceive honest businesses out of their hard earned money and we think it is absolutely deplorable. Please pass this article on to your fellow business owners so that they too can avoid such a scam.
