I haven't received any formal gamedev education, but I was lucky my high school offered a computer science class which was useful. That said, there are so many great resources online—I believe anyone can become a self-taught game developer!

The advice I usually suggest (and that many gamedevs suggest) is to start small by re-creating some classic games from start to finish. For example Pong, Snake, Asteroids, etc. This is helpful for "learning the ropes" of a game engine. I still do this myself when trying out a new engine / framework / tool.

If you don't have prior experience with a game engine, then I'd recommend Godot, GameMaker, Unity, or Unreal. Godot, GameMaker, and Unity all have good 2D support. All have big communities so there are lots of tutorials available.

Personally, I got started with GameMaker when I was young, and Godot is my recent preference. :)
