The Fool
The Fool: Tell an embarrassing story.
âDoes it have to be about me?â The brunette raises an eyebrow, popping another snackoo into her mouth. Itâs a rhetorical question, of course â sheâs probably just going to (loudly) munch away until sheâs left alone.
There was that one time in high school chemistry she spilled silver nitrate all over her hand, right before touching her face. Emaâs fairly sure sheâs destroyed all evidence of the incident, though, and sheâs never going to speak of the week-long embarrassment again.
Try to annoy my character in 10 words or less!
The Sun
The Sun: Describe a childhood memory.
Emaâs expression becomes hard. âNo.â The womanâs stare is unyielding. âMove along, before I spray you with acid.â The womanâs hand moves toward her bag, as if daring them to ask her again.
Her childhood memories are happy ones, of course â of picnics and family dinners, where investigation and law were common table topics; of her twelfth birthday, and her first bottle of fingerprint powder â but the woman prefers to not dwell on her past. Ema canât go back, canât take back whatâs gone, even if she wants to.
Sheâs not the same person she was back then, anyway.

Send me a (´âďžď˝*)ă .`-;- if you'd like to make a pre-established relationship with my character!
Kenshin would never dream of taking the offer back⌠well, unless she proved to be unworthy of the position. But again, he doubted she was unworthy if she was so passionate about it. âAs do I, Miss Skye. And donât worry, youâll have your own officeâ⌠Hmm?âÂ
Kenshinâs smile grew a bit at her compliment, giggling genuinely as the girl tossed the snack food at his forehead, reaching up to rub it. âAh, true. I find myself a very fortunate person from time to time⌠Iâm simply glad Iâm in your good favor. The museum could really use your help.âÂ
At any rate, now there was a the question of her position⌠If she was interested in forensics she could be of great use around the fossils and the more biological artifacts. And it wasnât as if there were a great many paleontologists or Egyptologists around- at least, none heâd found. Then there were the artifacts gathered on the island itself that could stand to be examined⌠there was still so little even the longtime inhabitants knew about the place.
âWell then, if forensics is your field⌠youâd be able to help analyze for anything we may have missedâŚâ His smile faded, but his voice remained calm and, frankly, soothing. âSo the question is- what would you prefer to work with, Ema? Fossils, artifacts from around the world, or maybe some of the things we managed to recover from the old ruins⌠They could all stand to be analyzed for evidence of what happened to them years ago.â
He had her full attention, now -- that she had even paused in her snack-chewing, even briefly, attested to how enticing his words were. Past grievances forgotten for the moment, Ema merely nodded as he spoke, running through the various possibilities in her head.
âIâll admit, fossils arenât my thing; I never had much use for paleontology in the past, but ...â Her eyebrows come together in a slight frown as she thinks for another moment, before she adds, âIâm certainly interested in the objects youâve found in the ruins.â
So, with that out of the way -- âWhen can I start?â Ema grins. âScience waits for no one, after all.â
target face / apollo
sometimes apollo wondered if snackoos were the only thing ema sustained herself on. it was a silly thing to think, but they were the only thing he had ever seen her eat. maybe she was one of those types that didnât like to eat potentially messy food in front of others? no, that wasnât something she would worry aboutâŚÂ ema skye continued to be an enigma to him.
apollo was used to his methods as a defense attorney being frowned on. he didnât exactly go around running his mouth but didnât try especially hard to make a secret of them either. he knew ema didnât exactly approve even though she had helped maintain his spotless record, but thankfully seemed willing to overlook it for the sake of their friendship.
he was tempted to boast that he had contributed to her popularity but caught himself. between her pride and conscience it was probably one of the last things she wanted to hear. âglad to hear your talents arenât going to waste.â he said instead which wasnât much of an improvement. best to go with the lesser of two evils.
he had never been the best at picking up on social cues but one would have to be a complete idiot to not pick up on the fact that ema was attempting to distract him from the current topic. he was wise enough to know to go along with it, allowing her to lead him to a seat.
âi guess iâll give that a try then, with a coffee⌠unless itâs some kind of trap.â he gave a nervous laugh. he wouldnât put it past her; it wouldnât be the first time ema had enjoyed a joke at his expense, harmless as they were. âgot a break coming up? youâre welcome to join me if you want.â the idea of eating alone didnât appeal to him much, even if his hair might be collapsed from the weight of snackoos by the time he left. Â
The woman was caught between wanting to flick Apolloâs shiny forehead or ruffle his hair -- while his suspicions werenât entirely unfounded, who did he think she was? (Ema would never have been that obvious. Honestly.) Instead, she simply smirked at him. âYouâll just have to find out. Put those lawyer-y deductive skills of yours to work.â
âAs for my break ...â The woman glanced at the clock. âI suppose Iâll join you. Iâll be back in a few.â She grabbed the notepad from her apron and scribbled down his order as she walked away, delivering it to the kitchen.
It would have been a few minutes for his order to be ready, so the woman took that time to check out for her break -- so when she walked back to Apolloâs table, there was an extra slice of cake for herself. Ema slid him his coffee and cake before poking at her own with a fork. âAnything interesting happen lately?â
Ema shot him an amused glance. âAnyone interesting?â
Of course, should she have hit him, he wouldnât have blamed her. But any idea that she might end up self-defending herself from any perceived creepiness faded as he noticed how she reacted. Clearly, he was right on the money about her. Heâd keep that in mind- actually approach people he had a hunch about.
He chuckled a bit as she agreed, nodding his head at her. âI canât say I know which field youâre in, but among its scientific offerings, the museum currently primarily exhibits biological attractions. Insects, fish, fossils, taxidermied animals⌠Though, outside of the natural history wing, of course we do have some Egyptian mummies, if forensics is something youâre interested in.â Another hunch. Hopefully heâd be right about that too.
âAt any rate if youâre interested in employment, we can discuss which role youâd like to fill. Of course thereâs maintaining the exhibits, researching the non-live exhibits taken out of circulation for refurbishment, offering tours to visitors, among others. Frankly weâre understaffed, so any service youâd like to offer Iâd be more than happy to hire and compensate you for.â Normally Kenshin would check if a person was qualified- but again, hunches pointed towards her being a decent scientist if she so reacted eagerly. And he could definitely use someone familiar with the sciences- he was much more an artist.
âSo, pre-emptively to working out the fine detailsâŚâ Kenshin raised his brow, holding out his hand again with a gentle smile.
âHave we a deal?â
Ema tried her best to keep her composure -- really, she did -- but there was only so much temptation she could handle before cracking. It took everything she had just to remain quiet as he spoke, even as her mind ran in a thousand different directions at once.
âForensic research.â The woman stared directly at him as she took his hand, giving it a firm shake. There was no taking the offer back. (Not without risking an with an incredibly aggravated Ema, anyway.) âI look forward to working with you.â Her expression remained severe for another moment before transforming into a small, genuine smile.
âKenshin, was it?â The scientist smirked before pulling out a bag of snackoos, flicking one at the center of his forehead. âI must say, Iâm impressed. Statistically speaking, itâs rather difficult to recover from a bad first impression.â

âOi, isnât Matoiâs house pretty small.. Like.. How are we gonna fit?â
âNah, she said we could hang out in the front lawn. Just donât touch the basement, âcuz thatâs where her dad works or somethin. Also, no cocaine in the bathroom.â
âFair ânuff.âÂ
Itâs not even like there was a formal announcement or even a text message. Ryuko just decided it was time for a good old shindig. If youâre alive, you probably got an invite or at least heard about it. Even if you werenât in high school - somebody would have still mentioned it in passing. There were only three key terms.Â
Bring yourself, bring food, and bring alcohol.
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Hi guys! Hereâs the 411. Ryukoâs having a party. The party is happening Saturday the 9th - however, youâre welcome to post starters any time between Friday - Sunday;  just try not to write something about this a week later, because that might confuse some people! Itâs probably best to write something up before hand and then post it when the time comes! I want this âeventâ (not official in any way!) to be an opportunity for FRWers new and old to interact - whether it be a group thread or two people making out in the toilet. Go wild! And please, enjoy.
PSST: when the time comes, letâs use the tag #frw house party, so we can check out interactions and post starters etc. If anyone has questions, youâre free to ask (I dunno what questions there would be tho, just party). WOOHOO
target face / apollo
apollo found it surprising that ema of all people had yet to ask him about his hair, the woman more science obsessed than anyone he had met in his short career as a lawyer. if she ever did she would likely be disappointed with the answer (copious amounts of hair gel and diligence); that possibility alone would be enough to prevent her from asking.
he had finished up early with his newest client and decided to duck into his favorite cafe on the way home for some much needed coffee. as it just so happened, a certain science lover happened to work there.
âyes, hello ema, lovely to see you too.â one day he would be quick enough enough to dodge the snackoos as he knew better than to hope she would stop eating them. âi had some spare time so i thought iâd drop in. think iâve about got this case in the bag, thanks to a little help.â he gave a smug smile. âso what about you, getting plenty of business?â he left the question somewhat open-ended. they were in public, after all, even if there werenât many people around at the moment.
She smirks at the lawyer, popping another snackoo into her mouth. âGood.â Ema isnât exactly proud, per se, but sheâs rather fond of the attorney -- klutzy, but with a heart thatâs in the right place. (For the most part.)
The woman raises an eyebrow at his question, and pauses only a moment before shrugging her shoulders with a non-committal noise. âYou could say that. Based on previous observations, more people are stopping by now than before, but ...â Ema shrugs again. âI guess Iâm not complaining.â
âAnyway, letâs get you seated.â She leades him to a table, handing him a menu. âLet me know when youâre ready to order.â Ema grins. âSurvey says the strawberry cheesecake is excellent.â
silky touch, irresistibly smooth / flynn
In hindsight, she should have seen it coming. Murphyâs Law had no basis in actual science, yet it held a painfully large amount of truth -- as evidenced by the half-drowned state of her apartment. Ema groaned. Her restaurant shift started in an hour, she was sopping wet and dirty from the rain and mud on the way home, and the woman was willing to bet her shower had stopped working about the time the disaster in her apartment reached ankle-level.
   âDammit.â
-- Which was why, forty-five minutes later, Ema had called in sick and was enjoying the warmth of Flynnâs surprisingly nice shower (and his strangely fragrant shampoo). She shut off the water and grabbed a fluffy towel, wrapping the cloth around her body before putting her hair up.
One step out of the restroom, however, and Ema found herself caught red-handed. âFlynn?â Her eyebrows came together in a frown. âYou arenât supposed to be at your apartment until six!â She glanced at the clock -- five forty-five. The woman huffed. âYou canât just go home early!â
âI donât blame you for your suspicionâŚâ He pulled his hand back, placing it to his side as he looked at her. âI deeply apologize, again. As for a reason why you shouldnât walk awayâŚâÂ
âItâs justâŚ. Iâll admit I was staring at you because something about your appearance spoke to me. At first I thought it because youâre rather cuteâŚâ Kenshin held back a looming nervous chuckle by pursing his lips. He didnât mean to flirt, merely compliment, but realized given how heâd stared at her for so long previously it could come across as rather frightening. He quickly continued.Â
ââŚbut Iâve also noticed your attire. It rather makes me think to assume youâre a scientist of some sort. Am I correct?â Kenshin smiled ever so gently. âIf so, I suppose itâs a good thing Iâve met you, Miss Skye. Iâve been looking for some volunteers or employees to help with the scientific exhibitions. Even if youâre not interested in employment, Iâd be more than happy to give you a tour of the museum sometime, and allow you to research some of the exhibits.â
Her eyebrows steadily climbed toward her hairline, and the woman briefly contemplated how quickly she could pull out a snackoo and land it squarely between his eyes. If that didnât express complete disinterest, she didnât know what would. (God, was the guy trying to flirt with her? After being outed as Creepy McCreeperson?) She barely suppressed a shudder.
Then he broke out the science, and the woman canât help the surprised gasp that flies out of her mouth.
âFor real?â She hadnât had a ârealâ job other than waitressing in such a long time, and now some stranger was offering her one? Her eyes narrowed at him once more, as if she were trying to discern a lie. âI mean, yeah, I am --â she was, but he didnât need to know that -- âbut ...â The woman hesitated. It felt way too good to be true.
Goddamn. âIâm in. Tell me more.â
Kenshin took pause as the young woman spoke. Had he been staring at her so intently? Was it because of her beauty? Well, something was definitely calming about her appearance to him, either way. Perhaps heâd ought to take her quip seriously. He smiled and nodded at her, tilting his head to the side. âI apologize if Iâve made you uncomfortable.â He held out his hand. âI should introduce myself. I am Kenshin, Kenshin Uesugi. I am the curator of the islandâs museum. And you might be?â
He seemed truly interested in getting to know her, whoever she might be. At times he could be aloof, yes, but lucky for him, and perhaps for Ema herself, this was not one of them.
She had been keeping an eye on him for a while now -- at first, she had wondered if she knew him, with the way he was looking at her so intently. But he made no move to approach her, and Ema wrote him off as a slightly-creepy guy with a penchant for staring. Heâd go away soon enough.
Until he didnât. âTake a picture, itâll last longer,â she snapped, not in the mood to humor anyone. Ema openly stared at his hand with suspicion and folded her arms over her chest. âNice to know Sir Stares-A-Lot has a name.â Her eyes narrowed at him. âIâm Ema Skye.â
âGive me one good reason not to walk away right now.â

âHeâs dead, letâs move on.â
Ema rolls her eyes. âAre you kidding? Itâs not every day I have an actual dead body to investigate!â The woman grins. âLetâs stay for a little longer? Please?â
The brunette doesnât even wait for a reply before pulling out a pair of gloves, kneeling carefully to start her examination of the body. âI swear, they wonât even know we were here.â
"Is that my shirt?"
Ema winces. â⌠Maybe?â She turns around to look at Katarina, a sheepish expression on her face. âLook, thereâs a perfectly reasonable explanation âŚâ Like maybe spilling coffee all over her own, or unfortunate bird poop placement, or any number of things â but the best thing the woman can come up in the bartenderâs presence is, â⌠I like it?â
âSo there isnât actually a perfectly reasonable explanation, but Iâll ⌠make it up to you?â Somehow.
