She hesitated only a moment before claiming the space he’d offered and hugging her son for the first time since he was a week old. The baby she’d once held in the crook of a single arm filled both her arms now. He’d become a young man without her, and while she nearly cracked beneath the weight of all she’d lost, other broken parts of her seemed to knit together with his embrace.

“Tell me about my son.”

He laughed. “Now?”

“I finally feel capable of hearing it.”

Siegfried settled onto his back beside her. “He’s wonderful. Smart, quick-witted. A bit of a rascal at times, but good. Kind and true. It’s his heart that always most reminds me of you.”

Audrey held her breath as she waited for someone to answer the line on the other end. It had taken every ounce of strength she had left to make this call and if he didn’t answer she wasn’t sure she’d have the courage to do it again.

“Darrowby 2297.”

It was his voice. Or at least she thought. It had been so very long. “Siegfried?”

“Yes. This is Siegfried Farnon. May I help you?”

She stumbled over her first few attempts to speak.

“Yes, hello. Is anyone there?”

“It… it’s Audrey.”

Once down to her most basic layers, she lay on the bed, lifted up her chemise, and lowered the waist of her drawers. “It’s small. Can you tell?”

He placed his hands down where she showed him, low. “Slightly rounder maybe. He’s really in there?”

“He is.”

He planted a soft kiss just there. “You’re beautiful.”
