“Honestly I share that trouble. Ever since the Uprising I’ve had difficulty sleeping myself. He’s like a bad nightmare you can truly wake from.” 

Especially since he had been the scribe chosen to interview Tachyon. The cragmite’s face was forever etched into his mind and no matter how hard he tried he just could not forget. 

Ademar set the ship to autopilot so he could look over which recording Ratchet had brought up. Ah yes he remembered that day, it was one of the most terrifying of his life. 

“You have an alpha cannon? Ratchet that weapon was engineered by lombaxes. Where in the galaxy did you manage to find it the first time?” 

He couldn’t believe it. That weapon was still around? He was sure that the inventors had taken it with them to the new dimension. 

Now Ratchet could not help but laugh at the older lombax’s reaction. It was enough to cause him to drop the device down to the ship’s floorboards. Although he did not seem too bothered by that.

“I could show it to you when we land. There’s not much room in here after all.”

Reaching down it took no time at all for him to find it, though when he did finally get it back up he was surprised to find that the trip had made it scroll through a number of other images. Landing on something he found pretty weird if his face was any indication.

That wasn't something you treated with disrespect. 

However his glare softened when he noticed the image had changed, Tachyon’s face how taking up most of the screen. Unable to look at it the elder turned away, his attention now focused back on their charted flight path. Oh, now he remembered why he’d never touched the thing, that was still imbedded into its files. 

“Back before the uprising I was...I was ordered by the council to interview Tachyon. Well it was really because General Azimuth’s request anyway.” 

His hackles raised, grip tightening on the wheel. 

“Because Tachyon spoke of collaborating with us to try and create new technology to help the galaxy recover from the Great War more quickly the general was very eager to do whatever it took to help him almost immediately. My hunch is that he requested the interview to try and sway more people over to his side.” 

The most frightening part was that Tachyon knew how to behave in a charming way. He could fake it very well. 

This blog is intended as the resurrection of a site which has been defunct for years now.  I liked the idea and wanted to see it brought to life again.  First I tried contacting the blog’s owner with the hope that I might be able to simply take that one over, but since I haven’t heard back from them in several months, I decided to make my own instead.

“Don’t worry I never intended on it. It’s just going to be something I think about for a while now.” 

Like most things that related to back then anyway. He was never able to shake those thoughts, no matter how hard he tried. This one may even keep him up at night. 

“That depends on how far back you want to go, or what you’re anxious to learn about first. Tell me, what is it you want to learn about most?” 

There were many records stored away in that little device, all equally important in his opinion. But it would be faster if they knew what they were looking for. Bypass all that was unnecessary for the moment. 

Ratchet could certianly come up with a number of subjects that he would like to look up, thinking them over carefuly he considered if the elder would find them at all concerning. But eventually he stopped caring about that and he pulled up information regarding the tactics used by foot soldiers against cragmites back during the great war.

“You know… ever since that time with Tachyon I’ve been having trouble sleeping sometimes. Maybe knowing what to do will help with that.”

That wasn’t a complete lie, he just did not say what that time was exactly. So if the elder believed that he meant his first meeting with the height challenged cragmite that he talked about back in the restaurant then that was his problem.

Skimming through the information in order to get an idea of just how long of a read he was in for, he stopped on the image of a lombax soldier using an Alpha Cannon to fire through multiple cragmites with just a single shot..

Especially since he had been the scribe chosen to interview Tachyon. The cragmite’s face was forever etched into his mind and no matter how hard he tried he just could not forget. 

Ademar set the ship to autopilot so he could look over which recording Ratchet had brought up. Ah yes he remembered that day, it was one of the most terrifying of his life.

Ademar’s ears perked at the sudden continuation, he had almost forgotten about their discussion himself. Still he listened with interest, finding himself starting to question just what the police had reported that day. 

“You may be right, but if it is true, then that concerns me greatly. They could have a very dangerous individual amongst them.” 

He silently snorted and focused back on his piloting, trying not to get himself riled up thinking about the possibility of that traitor still living. Not receiving the justice they deserved for their betrayal. If it had been up to this former scribe then that monster would’ve been locked away for life. 

“Still at least the Cragmites are gone, no possibility of something like that happening again. Unless they’re currently facing some other threat I don’t know about. But I highly doubt it. From what I could remember before being pulled back here we were getting along with a good portion of the other residence of that dimension rather well.” 

But then again, things change with time. 

Finally coming back to the device he pressed that section in the middle as the elder instructed him to do, bringing up that holographic interface. Though he froze before doing anything else at the mention of the cragmites being gone. How pleasant this universe seemed to him in comparison to home.

“Just don’t rush into an investigation or anything, especially without clearing everyone that’s carrying it out first. You don’t want it to get sabotaged and used to frame someone else.”

Going through that interface he really did not know where to start. So it was a very good thing that he had an expert here with him.

Like most things that related to back then anyway. He was never able to shake those thoughts, no matter how hard he tried. This one may even keep him up at night. 

“That depends on how far back you want to go, or what you're anxious to learn about first. Tell me, what is it you want to learn about most?” 

“I must say I do agree. I highly doubt a Cragmite would be able to sneak into a residential area undetected. That and hologuises were still relatively new technology in this time as well.”

Following Ratchet’s example the elder did the same with his own dishes and then pocketed his wallet once noticing that a tip had already been placed on the table.

“Of course, and thank you for leaving the tip, I appreciate it.”

He’d have to repay the young lombax for that later. With nothing left to tend to Ademar gestured for the young lombax to follow him back to his ship. The walk this time seemed to be much quicker to him, he supposed it was because of his eagerness to show Ratchet the Great Library. Educate him about his culture and history.

Once inside the vessel he reached into the glovebox and pulled out the chest piece of his former scribe garb and handed it to his companion to examine. If he was going to start educating Ratchet on lombax history then he might as well start now.

“All scribes had one of those on them at all times during shadowings. There’s recordings, interviews, and other things we saved so they could be processed later on the library’s computer. Go ahead and look around, just tap the middle of the piece once and a holo-screen will pop up.”

Looking the device over he did start to reach out for that spot in the middle but stopped himself about an inch before his finger pressed it. Instead he opted to set the device down in his lap, he did not want to be distracted from the topic at hand after all. So he decided to just continue on as if the passed few minutes hadn’t happened.

“And I really doubt they would have bothered to hire anyone to sneak in and do the job either. What’s the point of spending that kind of money just to kill one lombax? I mean unless it was a capture and recover job that went wrong but I don’t think that’s likely.”

Turning his attention to the device again for a moment, mainly just to give the old scribe some time to digest that thought before he moved on, Ratchet wondered if he could get a blank one while he was there to record his own travels and deeds. Surely someone would be interested in such a record.

“You may be right, but if it is true, then that concerns me greatly. They could have a very dangerous individual amongst them.”

“Thanks,” Kaden hissed, though his ire isn’t directed at Ademar. That was a close call, and one he was not interested in repeating. He’d come too far to get clumsy now, too far to end up dead in a place like this. Especially not at the hands of some low level thieving rifraff.

Or, were those… Paws?

Either way.

“I’d never think that, Sir.” Peeking out from behind the crates, the guardian gets in a few well aimed headshots before ducking back to safety to wait out the next volley. “You’re a Lombax.”

Didn't want to leave him to do all the fighting. 

“I think you're right, it would be best to discuss it later. Though I’ve got a few questions for you myself after all this is taken care of.” With that settled the elder got in a few shots, quickly pulling himself back just as an energy bolt went zooming by. 

Once the elder recieved the check he was quick to pull out his wallet, starting to count out the money in his head just as Ratchet brought back up the topic of just who might’ve taken out the mole. He was a bit surprised, but ultimately curious. Maybe they would have some good explanations as to what may have possibly happened.

“Well there’s only one way to find out. Go ahead and tell me, you may have thought up something the police hadn’t.”

With that said Ademar finally finished counting out the proper amount of bolts and placed them on top of the check on the table. However he didn’t move just yet, waiting to hear the young lombax’s suggestions.

“Well assuming your traitor lived in a residential area and there’s not anything else you’re holding back from me I really doubt a cragmite was the one that killed them.”

Standing up Ratchet pushed his seat back under the table and placed his dishes close to the its edge so it’d be just that much easier for the waiter to get them. Reaching into a pocket he placed a good amount of bolts on the table as a tip, hopefully they’d still be good despite being from another universe.

“What were you thinking?!”

“How are you getting home?” / “What time will you be back?”

“I don’t trust him/her/them.”

“You’re so clumsy…come here.”

“Don’t you dare go out there young man/lady/one!”

“You can’t just go wandering off like that.”

“I’m not going to let you die/get hurt/get your heart broken.”

“Is this person/lady/guy bugging you?”

“Don’t worry, I’ll get you out of there.”

“Put on your seatbelt.”

“You don’t understand it now, but I’m trying to protect you.”

“I don’t need you to save me.” / “It’s my job to save you.”

“Let me go in first.”

“Did you not see that car/motorcycle/space ship/etc. coming right at you?”

“Stop complaining. I’m trying to save your life.”

“I’ll diffuse the bomb. You get out of here.”

“Come on, let’s go for a walk.”

“I know I never say it, but…thanks.” / “I will never say thanks.”

“Will you stay a little longer?”

“I didn’t tell you because I knew what you’d say.”

“Stop talking or we’ll be found.”

“I’ll always be here for you.”

“Don’t you see that it’s a trap?”

“Well we did find out, but before we had the chance to arrest them they were found dead in their home. We still don’t know who did it and I’m sure we never will.” 

Then again it wasn’t like the case had been fully investigated, during that time the Great War was a higher priority and took the focus of most of lombax society. Ademar supposed that it would always remain some kind of mystery, but it’s not like it mattered anymore. 

Finally he finished his stew and gestured for their waiter to bring them the check. 

“After I pay I’ll take you to the Great Library. I must warn you though, the defenses are still active, so no rushing in there without me.” 

It was great to hear that they actually were going to the library right after this, he’ll have to run through what he wanted to look up in his head again, but for now his mind focused on the lombax that let out the defense codes and what happened to them. Despite not knowing all that much he did get some possible explanations, ones that were enough to make him grimace. 

“Well there’s only one way to find out. Go ahead and tell me, you may have thought up something the police hadn’t.”

“Military rations? Good lord I can’t imagine what that must taste like. That settles it next time you visit you must let me cook a traditional lombax meal for you.” 

Ratchet needed to get a taste of his own culture at least once. Not to mention it would be much more flavorful than that junk they no doubt fed him in the military. 

“Yes we did. You see each year scribes are given a code that disable the Great Library’s defenses when they report to work. Somebody or something must’ve given the Cragmites the current code that year. Of course once we figured it out we were quick to change it.” 

Ratchet really liked the sound of that and thought so much on wondering just what a traditional lombax meal was that he almost missed that last bit. He honestly figured they would have done that phasing thing they do to get passed the defenses, maybe this was before they had that pesky ability. 

Then again it wasn't like the case had been fully investigated, during that time the Great War was a higher priority and took the focus of most of lombax society. Ademar supposed that it would always remain some kind of mystery, but it's not like it mattered anymore.
