EX VOTO chapter I (Cassin and Colet)
ex voto is a series of short scenes and chapters, sometimes connected, sometimes standalone stories, with no set genre other than that there's a monk for a main character, and occassionally a knight. Intended for adult audiences.
🍎 ex voto (like all comics I post here!) will always be free to read, but you can support my ability to continue making it through ko-fi or patreon (coming soon!)
(fitzjames voice) god wants you to live
for this, actually, God has very little to do with it. Colet wants Cassin to live, and that was before they ever spoke a word to each other. Cassin finds life and living to be a holy thing now, and that's because Colet refused to let him die. to wake up when you thought you would die (and maybe, were hoping for it) and to find the stranger who stitched the wound on your side together, asleep mid prayer, rosary in his hands, at your side is something. devotion, after all, is a kind of love. so is care given without expectation of reward. so is telling the abbot that God can fuck off, what's the point of free will otherwise?
this comic is the more fully realized version of the initial thought I had about some Themes all the way back in may! I have a couple more chapters planned out for Cassin and Colet, and then there's some monastic horror I want to tackle once I get done reading this book on grail quest narratives.
and! the final note here: the latin text, that's the Hail Mary. we'll get into it in a later chapter, but Colet's identification with Mary is because medieval Mariology is an extremely fun time to read about. the gender is incredible.
