I’m trying to add depth and this is it’s progress
pink painting time lapse pt 2 (19.Nov.25)
at what point does it stop being an 'artwork' and become an illustration?

summarised, Alex said that it (the pink painting) looked flat. Id argue that my fav sections of the work are layered more than the rest of the image... she's probably right enough. I guess that means it needs more shadowing about the place. maybe add a landscape, suggestion.? Still considering adding little dudes, still not sure. *OH maybe sheep + wolf symbolism?* I put a thinner wash lighttly over the lil tv dude. it's texturally less jarring now but still feels like one of a kind on the whole. (24.Nov.25) What if you got a grey/black wash jar and made little caves or something ? there's a lot of space, it could be designed for a dark environment and you dont notice the other little dudes until you get much closer...
these are the close up textures of the newest image I'm working on.
my personal fav is the last, reminds me of dr. sussuse for some reason. I like the bleeding and the drops and the layers and the brush strokes and textures. it feels lively but unwell? I like the chalk style texture over the painted backdrop. I like the differing shades of the same colours. I like the outlines and the brush Mediums in use to draw here are oil stick (blue blending wit weird pink in 3rd image, top left) and some sort of coloured chalk sticks (tv dude + upside down star/cross in 4th image), im not sure what they're called. Still not sure if the tv dude suits his environment but he certainly left a mark on mum; tonight instead of tv we listened to a podcast... (23.Nov.25)

Painting reflection

This time it was filmed for a Timelapse. I enjoy the layering aspect of the oil wash. (oil paint + thinner.) One comment from Feedback Viewing was that the lil tv dude looked or felt out of place. Id like to resolve this issue. Consider the texture/layering tho.
I think it needs more characters. maybe all of them smaller than the tv dude and all of them have eyes and it's the only piece of tech. The circle pattern that happens from the thinner was noted during Feedback Viewing too.
Wouldn't go as far as to say I like this work HOWEVER there are bits that stand out to me as a step in the right direction..
the background; The layering. The different styles of colour and medium application. The different depths of colour. the texture. It's emotive, almost manic. The colours contrasting, demanding attention and blending into each other.
IRL the yellow oil sticks used blend nicely with the background and allow the attention to be drawn from background to foreground without too much 'arguing'. That transition from back to front takes the attention to said shapes on the right side (I think due to the layering of red on yellow). I'll describe those shapes as cyber sigilism, seems to fit right here.
The work looks better when hung and not laid on the ground. the eyes are drawn to the flowing shapes along the right edge and top rather than the face. and the base of the image feels fuller than it appears here.
I don't like how 'explicit' the face is. Doesn't leave much to the imagination or leave much to consider. That is what I'll work on next. The line on the right side was supposed to be like a bracket ' ) ' but I think that reference was too lose.
Additionally, I'll consider doing it as a landscape, it is not a massive canvas and there could be room for more of a story. That could be hard to achieve given the size of the oil sticks being using.
Can you find 3 spirals?
Mediums used: Canvas size: - oil paint - 103x190cm - oil sticks Time to complete: - liquid water colour. - like 3 hours + tiny additions

first up, needs better photos. badly. the splash of blue is ok, the colours aren't bad but overall its not saying anything to me. I dont remember anything about this one, maybe I was trying to avoid wasting paint. some of the colours look over worked. There is no rhyme or reason for the brush strokes. the purple next to the blue looks so bad, the contrast is terrible. same with the yellow.
Is sort of disappointing and you can tell it hasn't beed thought out well / inexperienced or maybe not confident with it. Doesn't feel like anything more than putting down colours.
