Feeling A Way About Destiny And The Games Industry And Art
I've been trying to put into words how the final update of Destiny makes me feel since it was announced. I haven't been able to appreciate it the way I used to since the second round of layoffs after TFS. Every story beat that didn't land or every mission that felt a bit tedious made me wonder - what could this have been if they had kept the whole team? What would have happened if they had been given the time and resources to make something great?
I love this universe, and the characters that hundreds of developers have poured their hearts into creating. But the American games industry feels hostile towards the kind of work that made the Destiny universe feel so special to me - lore entries don't make money, cutscenes are too expensive, every line of dialogue is another budget expense that yields no return on investment in the eyes of the stakeholders. I saw the same thing happening in the game I was working on, where budgets were reduced over and over again, forcing my team to work harder and harder to try and meet a level of quality that was simply unobtainable without sufficient time and money. We spent months scrambling to find solutions to budget cuts, only to be told the budget was being cut yet again, and again, and again. Finally we were told the game was going to be shut down - and the hundreds of people working on the team, including myself, would be laid off. There was no consideration for the success of our final update, or the thousands of people who loved our game and played every single day - years of investment both from developers and players was reduced to a number on a spreadsheet, and someone who makes more than all our salaries combined decided that the number wasn't big enough.
All this to say, the news of Destiny's final update hit very close to home for me, and brought up a lot of grief I've spent the last six months trying to process. I know firsthand how angry the devs must be, and how scared, and how bitter - what could they have done better? What could have prevented this? There may be design decisions you can point towards, misplaced focus on crossovers and cosmetics, but ultimately the decision to end Destiny came from the top, from a number on a spreadsheet that someone decided wasn't big enough, and wasn't interested in trying to fix.
The games industry is feeling increasingly hopeless, with shockingly few jobs being fought over by thousands of laid off devs. Something like 30% of the American games industry has been laid off within the past few years - many have been laid off, fought their way into a new job, uprooted their families and sold their homes to move to a new city, only to be laid off again a few months later. Within my circle, there's been a lot of speculation about what the end of Destiny means for Bungie, especially since Marathon isn't taking off in the way they had hoped. Bungie, for all its faults, will always be the reason I fell in love with games - an industry without Destiny, and potentially without Bungie, is nauseating to think about.
There's so much I have to thank Destiny for. It gave me something to look forward to during an exceptionally difficult time in my life. I got back into Destiny shortly before I started thinking about my gender, and transitioning is the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It caused me to lose my partner of many years, caused a rift between my family, and forced me to look in the mirror and really acknowledge how unhappy I was for the first time in my life. People have written before about how a lot of themes in Destiny strike a particular chord with the trans community, and I don't think it's surprising that exploring the lore and writing about my favorite characters became a safe space for me while the rest of my life seemed to be falling apart at my own hands. The game inspired a creativity in me that I had been suppressing for years, and the community here gave me a glimmer of confidence that there was something I was doing that people liked. Because of Destiny, I became a much better artist, I took on creative projects I never would have dreamed of, and I allowed myself to wonder for the first time what I wanted my life to look like rather than just mindlessly doing what I thought I was supposed to do. My whole life, I've made myself believe that any creative work is just a silly, self-indulgent hobby, something to keep secret from the people around me. This weekend, I'm going to be selling art for the first time in my life, and I don't think I ever would have made it to that point without the joy this community and this game have brought me.
This is a long and rambling message with no real point, but I guess what I'm trying to say is: life is scary, the world is scary, and I'm somehow the happiest I've ever been. I love Destiny, and I love you all - thank you for going on this journey with me.
I hope my comment didnt duplicate on your comic, it kept saying 'not authorized'. but i just wanted to share my love for your crow/jolyon artwork
Ive reread this about 4 times now. your artwork is soo good. Did you finish this comic in word format? love love love your storytelling!
I don't think your comment went through at all, this website is so fake π
But thank you so much, I really appreciate it and it's always so rewarding to know that other people like them as much as I do! I did post everything I had written for the comic here - the format is a little weird since it's mostly my chaotic comic planning document transcribed into something semi-readable. And it's also incomplete and entirely pre-final shape, before Crow enters the portal. But there's a normal fic buried in the middle of it, which is like my favorite thing I've ever written, and I'm still just really attached to this little AU I've crafted and would like to add more to it.
As for the comic, I'm still hoping to finish the first "arc" which should be two more parts, and ends with the first chapter of that fic. I was making good progress on it but then I got really stuck with the flow of dialogue and then got hit with art block and then I was like fuck it I'll just wait for Revenant to end to see if there's any fun Crow developments I can incorporate. But I've been drawing a lot of Jolyon lately so I'm hoping I'll get back to it soon - and then after that I may draw some other snippets from that fic, though probably not as long/supplemented with text because holy shit comics are hard. Unfortunately I've been pretty uninvested in destiny the game since the most recent layoffs at bungie, and it's unlikely they'll ever give us any in-depth resolution w/ Jolyon anyway, so I might just take them and my fake-ass little AU and run with it for a while idkkk

My hottest take on Jolyon & Uldren is that bungie should never concretely define the nature of their relationship bc I think it would be a retcon to say that Uldren was capable of defining any of his close relationships in any sort of normal, not insane way
They're bffs. They're lovers. They're divorced. They're each others' office crush. They're platonic soulmates. They're friends with benefits. They're in their honeymoon phase. They're just hunting buddies. They're a bickering old married couple. They want each other carnally. Neither of them keeps a toothbrush at home for the other. All of this is true to me

There used to be a Jolyon Till Lore master post floating around, but I've lost track of it so I'm making my own. Tagging @purplegalaxy99 β¨

Jolyon Till was the friend and partner of Uldren Sov, and a current acquaintance of Crow. He is described as tall, with "narrow intelligent eyes" and blue skin, and was perceived as "happy-go-lucky" before Uldren's downfall. He is known for his skills as a Crow (Awoken intelligence) and a sniper, though he also works as a scout.
Note: though the nature of his relationship with Uldren isn't explicitly stated, it is generally interpreted as romantic, the same way Osiris and Saint-14's relationship was interpreted before being officially confirmed.
Jolyon is mostly known for breaching the Black Garden alongside Uldren [The Forsaken Prince], but he also created the Lord of Wolves shotgun. His signature weapon is the Supremacy, a rapid-fire sniper rifle; his secondary weapon, like all other scouts, is a Vestian Dynasty sidearm.
Not much is known about Jolyon's personal life, though Uldren knew "everything about him." He knew someone named Laviska [1] and attended the same combat academy as Uldren [2], and is known to be rational, but it is unknown whether he is a Distributary Awoken or has any family or loved ones besides the Sovs.
Like Petra and the Techeuns, he can travel to / from / around the Dreaming City but is not tied to its curse. Whether this is because he didn't die during the curse's activation (like Amrita did), or simply due to the inconsistencies within the curse lore, is currently unknown.

Jolyon has only been mentioned once in-game, in this radio message from Season of the Lost.
This is a great compilation of Jolyon's lore! I just have a few additions:
Jolyon was also mentioned in game during Season of the Haunted, in this line from the memory of Uldren.
It's also mentioned that Jolyon is a childhood friend of Mara's (and Uldren as well, presumably) in the Holdfast Mark lore, which pretty much confirms Jolyon is a distributary Awoken.
can't overstate how unwell it makes me that when the Yang Liwei was voting on whether or not they should turn back to help in the collapse, Uldren wanted to keep going.
Like. Mara has been weird and distant and living outside the ship and making fucked up abstract art by suffocating herself out in the void of space and recording her brain literally dying and he's just like yeah man. I'll support your weird concerning hobby because you're my sister and I trust you and I love you more than anything. And then the world is ending and she tells him she wants to turn back, even though she knows they can't possibly make a difference and they'll die if they do it. And Uldren wants to keep going, because he wants to live and he wants her to live too. All Mara wants is to die for a purpose and all Uldren wants is to convince her not to.
And meanwhile their mother is just blaming Mara for Uldren's adoration of her, trying to convince her that everything he does for her is only because Mara has subconsciously manipulated him into doing it. And then when they leave the Distributary and Osana stays behind but Uldren doesn't, Mara knows he doesn't care about saving humanity, but he still follows her out of literal eternal paradise to go back to Sol. They make me so insane man
Wough this has nothing to do with my generalized jolyon sickness woughhhh this has nothing to do with mara's "If you worship me you can't love me anymore, I cannot love what has no power over me" to sjur woughhhh this has nothing to do with anything at all btw nobody look at me
