Scenes from the New York subway system circa 1980
80s you crazy ass funks
1980
I remember being terrified of and fascinated by the subway in NYC in the 80s. When I went back there in the 90s, I was astounded by how much the system had cleaned up.

The Trayvon Martin rally in NYC marched 30 blocks to Times Square
Thousands have now shut down Time Square staging a massive sit-in. Traffic stopped; no arrests so far.
Times Square currently
New York City, lit up like a bulb. The Statue of Liberty is clearly visible in the night from above.

New York City shining by night. Central Park is visible from space, and maybe even the light on the Statue of Liberty.
How it feels.
Fantastic news, New Yorkers! You can vote at any polling place tomorrow.
Let’s hear it for NEW YORK <3
WNYC put together this detailed list of ways you can support those devastated by Sandy in NY and NJ. Please help out + share.
I know other states were massively affected by the storm as well. If you know of similar ways to help in these other areas, please post, hashtag #SandyRelief and I’ll reblog.
Thanks again,
<3
The New York Public Library is opening 62 branches on Nov. 2 from 11 am. to 5 p.m. That’s seven more branches than we were able to open on Nov. 1. The complete list of open branches can be seen on our website. Stop by, charge up your phone, use the Internet, read a book, talk to your neighbors and enjoy free programming (in fact, many branches are adding programs for children and teens, since they don’t have school). The 55 branches open yesterday were packed full of people - this photo from our Inwood branch, for example, shows a jammed community room, full of kids and parents listening to stories. This is the scene at all of our libraries, so come on down and join us. Please be aware, our servers are down due to power outages, so services will vary location to location (for example, some patrons may not be able to check out new materials). We will continue to combat power outages to get our servers back online and all of our locations open - stay tuned here for the latest.

Seen on Broadway near 30th street. At least this traffic signal has power to it.
Decided to walk home on 6th avenue last night. And it seems even darker than it is on the east side
I was in New York for the Hurricane Sandy, with Scott. I drew sketches of it as we went through. If you click on the picture you’ll see them all in a long image.
Lexington Ave (I think? now I forget exactly where I was) between 40th and 39th streets. The line between the Dark Zone of southern Manhattan and the world of light and warmth to the north.
NYC day 4: power-stripping
