A Vivian Maier photo from 1953, looking down 3rd Avenue from 59th Street. The bottom photo is of the same view (but from ground level) via Google Street View (h/t to redditor christmas_squid)
This video of someone pretending to be Humans of New York is hilarious.
Even better: HONY's non-litigious response on Facebook:
In case any of you had a strange conversation with 'me' lately.... don't feel bad if you got tricked, not a bad impression, actually!
That aircraft carrier doesn't look so big.
Kayaking on the Hudson, launching just south of the USS Intrepid
Went kayaking again with Manhattan Kayak Company...this time, we trekked through the ferry terminals, across the Hudson River, and over into Hoboken. Just an amazing day with our wonderfully patient guide who, after 10 or so years of kayaking here, has never gotten tired of the Hudson.

This building near the now-demolished 520 Fifth Ave. apparently didn't bother to install windows where its view would have been obstructed. Good way to save money, I guess (I'm assuming the new luxury condo will be even taller). The last photo is from Google Street View in Sept. 2012, in which you can see the pre-demolished neighboring building.
Tragically, a cyclist was killed this morning at the intersection of 108th St and Park Avenue. (DNAInfo, Gothamist).
Each time I see something like that happen in the city, I ask my self was this predictable? Obviously no single accident is, but with some data we can identify hot spots and...
I want a t-shirt with this.
(Seen in LES, near Economy Candy)
Tonight I saw the most useful upgrade to the NYC subway system that's happened in the six years I've lived here...though they could always squeeze a little more grip space like the Italians do in Rome's cars (right).
...I'm kind of waiting in anticipation to see what the "Showtime" boys can do with twice-the-gripping area...

I'd just say to aspiring journalists or writers -- do it now. Don't wait for permission to make something that's interesting or amusing to you. Just do it now. Don't wait. Find a story idea, start making it, give yourself a deadline, show it to people who'll give you notes to make it better. Don't wait till you're older, or in some better job than you have now. Don't wait for anything. Don't wait till some magical story idea drops into your lap. That's not where ideas come from. Go looking for an idea and it'll show up. Begin now. Be a fucking soldier about it and be tough.
Ira Glass, one of the hardest-working (and successful) executives in today's new media world, and host of "This American Life", as told to Lifehacker
The unfinished third section of the High Line Park
Kayaking on the Hudson River before sunset, from Pier 44, just south of the USS Intrepid museum.
Sin Will Find You Out...in Hell's Kitchen. More specifically, 51st Street, between 8th and 9th avenues...
This is about the closest I've seen Manhattan from a jetliner's window.

It's hot out, so here's a photo of a cop car waiting at a NoLita intersection last winter.
