We're in the middle of a long-awaited site overhaul, and with the homepage done and under development, the design director and I've been trying to figure out the best way to lay out the navigation bar up top for mobile experience. For the homepage, it was the hamburger menu on the top left and a shopping basket icon on the right. It is an e-commerce site, after all.
But the nav bar issue rose again with the product & checkout pages. Do we want the hamburger & shopping basket up on the nav bar? Don't we need a back button for iPhone devices that don't have an internal one? We did try an option where we had a back button on the top left and the hamburger on the top right. We wanted the hamburger, yes, the shopping icon, as well as a back button. I guess something needs to be sacrificed, but here are several issues we've had to try and solve and they still leave some things to be desired:
- Although the hamburger icon used to (still does) sit on the top right for many apps out there, it doesn't feel natural for anything to swipe from the right, especially when text is read from the left. Hence, we want it on the top left.
- This means the back button "<" would either have to move somewhere else or share the left half of the nav bar. Neither options are acceptable, however, as it'd be terrible to have a "<" icon on the right side, and if the left area is shared by both the back button and the hamburger to the shopping cart alone on the right, tapping on either one of them wouldn't be as intuitive.
- if we have just the hamburger and the back button on the top nav, leaving the shopping cart icon inside the menu panel that would slide out, the goal of our project here gets undermined as, again, this is an e-commerce site and ultimately we want revenue. Having a readily accessible shopping cart just a tap away would make things so much easier.
Along with the homepage, the product & checkout pages, both desktop and mobile, are underway to getting developed and we've managed to buy ourselves a little bit more time, but we'll need to find a solution fast.
