“hey---they aren’t bad. my dad jokes just happen to be fantastic.” he said with a light chuckle. “i don’t know about that, i like to think i’m pretty badass. i mean who else do like 95% of the avengers and x-men collectively hate as much as me? that’s the definition of badass.” 

“remember who you’re talking to here. do i, scott summers ever joke?” he asked with a grin. “you do know you don’t gotta walk right? i can drive you home if you need it.” 

“you’re at the x-mansion.” he replied giving her a small smile. “at least until you heal up, then you’re free to go. we don’t want to keep you---caged for too long.”

“how long before that starts though emma? its human nature to treat those they fear terribly, i’m sure soon enough we’ll have those here that treat us that way too. sentinels don’t but who knows what else could. i’ve been looking into some news reports, have you heard of this darkseid?”

scott shrugs his shoulders at her words. “training mostly. worrying the rest of the time. i thought things were bad before emma but---things are even worse here than they were there. at least there we didn’t end up with murderous kitty and a bunch of brain-washed heroes.”

“my relationship is great with most of them. i mean---we argue sometimes sure but there’s not a single one of them i wouldn’t put my life on the line for if the need arose and I know the feeling is mutual with them---well most of them.”

scott looked over at the other figure dumbfounded before standing up. “nope. i’m out. i’m not dealing with this today.” he said, walking away. he returned a few seconds later, scooping up his hotdog. “i can’t believe you’ve done this.” 

“would you rather me mistake you for logan or for kitty? i think both are just as unfavorable in your eyes.” he replies, watching as the paper is taken from his hands. “i know that. one can only hope though right? maybe there will be a phoenix that comes here that i can use to piss everyone off with again. give this world a mutant population of its own. i thought we were bad off with everything that happened with wanda but----this is far worse. quite a few of the young mutants here with us already dead----and katherine missing. i’m not exactly sure what to do anymore.”

“its not waiting around laura. its planning.” scott replied, looking up at her. “emma and i aren’t just sitting around and doing nothing, trust me. things are just strained at the moment. especially considering everything going on with katherine.” 

“that’s him!” scott chuckled, returning the smile. “i suppose not. plus i’m sure i would’ve smelled him before he even got close to the door if it were really him.” he continued. “logan aside though, is there something i can help you with?” 

scott peered up and the expression on his face lit up almost instantly. “you are far from a disappointment jean.” he shrugged his shoulders at her words. “just since last night, not too terribly long.” he chuckled before motioning to the seat in front of him. “have a seat. the company would be nice.” 

scott adjusted the glasses on his face, reading over one of the many newspapers stacked in front of him. with cerebro down he’d resorted to scanning the paper’s for any signs of young mutants though as of right now, his labors had been fruitless. he’d just finished another paper and reached to pick up another one when the sound of a knock on his office door echoed through the room. “its open.” he called to whoever it was on the other side of the door, laying down the paper and leaning back in his chair. “well unless you’re logan.”
