Firstly, congrats for taking the time to really research this and to treat surfing like a real sport rather than just throwing a blonde guy with a hang loose symbol into your book. You’re already well on your way to a well-thought-out story and character. Surfing is complicated and lots of different types of people participate in it. While I’m a Californian and everyone thinks this is what I do all day, I can’t say I know much about it myself, but here are the resources I found that I think will help.
First off, the terminology:
The Glossary of Surfings Terms (this site in general is also great, so I reccomend checking it out beyond this page. There’s all sorts of information here about surfing, waves, etc. and can link you to surfing movies, books, and more!
Surfology Glossary (this one is a bit more scientific, so you really sound like you understand how surfing actually works)
