“When I first saw the original painting, I began to do some research on that little boy. I could find everything I wanted about every other detail in the painting, but there was nothing about him. No history. And so I wanted to find a way to imagine a life for this young man that the historical painting had never made space for in the composition: his desires, dreams, family, thoughts, hopes. Those things were never subjects that the original artist wanted the viewer to contemplate. In order to reframe the discussion, I decided to physically take action to quiet [and crumple] the side of the painting that we’ve been talking about for a very long time and turn up the volume on this kid’s story. And that’s the reason why I started that painting.” Via Artnet News 2019/03/27
"[William T.] Hornaday's views about the natives of sub-Saharan Africa mirrored [Samuel Phillips] Verner's own, conscripting Darwin in the service of racism: he told the New York Times that "there exists a close analogy of the African savage to the apes." Scientific American agreed: "the Congo pygmies [are] small, ape-like, elfish creatures, furtive and mischievous, they closely parallel the brownies and goblins of our fairy tales. They live in the dense tangled forests in absolute savagery... while they exhibit many ape-like features in their bodies."
But Hornaday espoused a more progressive vision as a scientific artist, and we have him to thank for the modern American zoo. As Chief Taxidermist of the National Museum (the Smithsonian), a position he held until 1890, he had inherited a static mausoleum of tatty taxidermy enshrined on plaster pedestals with only laconic placards to suggest what the animal have been like in life.
In 1888, Hornaday persuaded the museum to add a wing of living animals and life-like settings, which proved so popular a revolution that it became the National Zoological Gardens. He resigned over differences of vision, but in 1896 he reemerged as the first director of the New York Zoological Gardens (known as the Bronx zoo), the world's largest, luscious, and most varied zoo...
So when [Ota] Benga was locked in the monkey house, before the staring crowd and with keepers always nearby, he was given a bowl and arrow to brandish, his cage was littered with bones, and his two cage mates were Dinah, a gorilla, and an orangutan named Dohung. The placard on Benga's enclosure read, "the African Pygmy, 'Ota Benga'. Height 4 feet 11 inches. Weight 103 pounds. Brought from the Kasai River, Congo Free State, South Central Africa by Dr. Samuel P Verner. Exhibited each afternoon during September."
...Black New Yorkers were incensed, and representatives of the clergy, led by the Reverend Dr.MacArthur, pressed mayor George B. McClellan to withdraw the city's support from the exhibit. Another minister, a Reverend Gordon, told the New York Times "Our race... is depressed enough without exhibiting one of us with the apes. We think we are worthy of being considered human beings, with souls.""

btw if you are friends with someone and you have the kind of dynamic where you can tease each other you also need to be nice. just so we're all aware. you also have to be nice with your words on top of it. like with your words. use your words. you should tell them with your words when you like something about them. if you are scared of being too sincere or vulnerable that is not an excuse to not be nice to someone. also you should work on that. ok are we all on the same page

Even [Saartjie] Baartman's name was stripped from her and replaced with the sardonic sobriquet "Hottentot Venus" and she was often portrayed with Cupid, the Western embodiment of carnal attraction, perched on her ample buttocks. Thus, in stark contrast to the "real" white Venus of sublime but unattainable beauty, Baartman embodied not only the boundary between man and animal but also the lure of the bestial, the base, and grotesquely hypersexual.
Bartman was not the only African woman to be exhibited as a Hottentot Venus, but she became an important exemplar of the medically exploitative display of Black peoples. One may be tempted to think that display of Africans such as Baartman is unconnected to the plight of their enslaved American contemporaries, but medical scientists viewed them as the same peoples. This era saw the burgeoning of academic ethnology, that branch of anthropology devoted to the study of race, and what scientists thought true of Africans was also believed of American "Negroes"...
Western medicine was not finished with its Hottentot Venus. In 1817, Baron Georges Cuvier, the French zoologist and physiologist who founded the field of comparative anatomy, dissected her body. He was not an objective observer, having already been convinced of her people's inferiority. "Their color is black, their hair crimped, their heads squashed and their noses flat. Their protruding mouths and thick lips are strikingly similar to those of the apes. The peoples which compose this race have already been savages."
Cuvier cast Baartman's body in plaster in 1817, preserved her brain, vulva, and anus in glass jars, then stripped the flesh from her skeleton and hung it on display in Paris's Musée de'l Homme. He noted, "She had a way of pouting her lips exactly like that we have observed in the Orang-Outang... her lips were monstrously large; her ear was like that of many apes, being small, the tragus [the bit of cartilage that partially covers the opening of the ear] weak... These are animal characters."
Cuvier had once noted that Baartman possessed a tenacious memory; she also spoke Dutch, English, and French. Yet, he left her this final assessment: "These races with depressed and compressed skulls are condemned to a never ending inferiority.""

a danger of talking about diagnosis as though it legitimises xyz functional struggle is that it always carries the implication that people w/out a medical chart designation are not entitled to experience the same difficulties, or more specifically are not entitled to the accommodations for it. this has obviously shitty consequences for people who cannot afford encounters w/ the medical system, but also for those who simply don't fit or don't use specific professionally legitimated nosological taxonomies. this is why it's interpreted as a threat to recognise & accommodate disability w/out requiring a specific diagnostic term or process as a mediator. diagnosis can only grant access to certain resources for certain people by virtue of its antithetical power to gatekeep them from others; and ofc the access it does grant is always & therefore limited and precarious in nature
i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people
people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!
Come to think of it, it really is insane that my entire country is burning alive and literally no one in the rest of the world cares. Thousands of Indians are dying every day from the heat, it's 45+ degrees in multiple areas, the government couldn't give two fucks, we're getting severe warnings and red alerts, and not a soul outside of South Asia is speaking about it because why would you ever care about brown people
please keep talking about how Becky from Maryland doesn't like the rising gas prices. It's clearly the more pressing issue.
USA folks, that is a consistent temperature range hitting 113°. Death Valley temperatures. In Banda, it hovered between 116°-118° (47°-48° C) for a week straight.
This has been happening all month with little to no international media attention. Here are a few organizations you can check out for resources or to support:
ActionAid India
SEEDS India

just saw someone say 5 year olds can't read and it had thousands of likes
i always thought i was just biased because my mom "home schooled" me for pre-k so i went into public school already knowing how to read, write, basic phonics and spelling, basic addition and subtraction, etc. i have such a vivid memory of sitting on the carpet during my first week of school wondering why our teacher was going over the alphabet and which sounds the letters make. don't we already know the alphabet? i got frustrated doing what everyone else was doing until the 1st grade teachers agreed to pull me out during reading and math time to join them instead.
but you're supposed to do that. my mom was actually right in doing that and not saddling some poor teacher with a kid who doesn't even know their own full name or how to hold a pencil, let alone WRITE their name correctly. i didn't realize it was that bad. i feel like if not just sheer laziness and handing their kid a tablet, parents forget kids don't come out of the womb being able to figure these things out on their own. reading and writing is not instinctual and they don't learn just waddling around with a sticky ipad in their hands playing cocomelon on repeat. any delay in learning these skills can lead to major deficits down the road if not immediately corrected. it's why there were kids in high school who were functionally illiterate with no developmental delays or cognitive issues
I had the same experience of being able to read around 2-3 and being way ahead of most of the other kids when I got to school. This was before ipads existed.
The problem is absolutely a class divide where families who need to have both parents working and cannot afford childcare often do not have the dedicated time to sit down and read with their kids. I was extremely lucky that my mom was able to stay home with me for the first few years of my life before she had to return to work. (Thanks to support from family and my Dad working like 80 hours a week.) Blaming individual parents instead of the system that gives them absolutely no support in homeschooling their kids from ages 0-5 is shortsighted. Yes, we can encourage parents to teach their kids phonics at a young age, but we need to provide the financial and social support to actually make this possible.

it is very silly (i speak lightly here!) to observe that 'femboy' is considered a (comparatively, i have to emphasize, this is 'palatability' in an extremely limited sense) palatable identity when proferring oneself forward for the sexual consumption of a transmisogynistic culture & then to take this up with the goddamn femboys
video: tiktok video of black woman talking to the camera, captioned "acoustic covers of rap songs being breeding grounds for anti-Blackness".
I hate how every time somebody makes an acoustic cover of a rap song, y'all be in the comments like "Wait guys, why are the lyrics actually kinda deep?" Duh! Of course the lyrics are deep. The problem is, some of y'all have a bias so deeply entrenched that you can't possibly fathom the fact that Black music can be deep, can be introspective, can be intellectual. Y'all turn on Vaughn and Durk and YoungBoy thinking like, "Ay, whoopty-woo, it's just a little hood jam." No, these - Yes, yes the songs are fun, I'll admit that, but these songs are talking about real life stuff. They're talking about losing people to gun violence. They're talking about substance abuse. They're talking about growing up in poverty. But again, unfortunately, the contributions that Black people make to art in this country are so commonly disrespected and invalidated to the point where y'all only ever appreciate rap when it's made palatable. When it's turned into an acoustic cover!
end video description.
the highest recorded wet bulb temperatures in the world occur in india, jsyk. in odisha, they’ve hit 34.6 degrees celsius. the human survivability limit is 35 degrees celsius but the body faces significant risks, potentially fatal risks, even at 30 degrees as it starts failing to cool itself, like i’m talking organ failure levels of risk. climate change isn’t coming to peak, it’s been in the global south where you can’t see it or feel it.
imagine temperatures that high and humidity as high as 75%—you make more heat than you can ever cool. your sweat cannot evaporate fast enough. you literally boil alive. heat deaths in india are underreported and they already hit the thousands. there is no plan, for a nation of almost 2 billion people. no plan. nothing.
baseball fights are better than hockey fights because everyone expects a fight in hockey. baseball fights are some real hater shit
ABSOLUTELY COMICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 22, 2026 - Mass protests have broken out across Colombia after Trump-backed millionaire far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella claimed a razor-thin victory.
Preliminary counts show de la Espriella leading by fewer than 250,000 votes. Leftist Senator Iván Cepeda announced that party lawyers are contesting 27% of the ballot boxes due to irregularities.
Outgoing President Gustavo Petro leveled serious allegations of foreign meddling, claiming Israeli intelligence interfered in the electoral process.
The far-right leader’s victory speech has already escalated tensions. De la Espriella issued a chilling openly urged his supporters to "confront" anyone questioning the vote.
His aggressive rhetoric mirrors his recent pledge to Donald Trump, where he vowed to use his platform to target the left and aggressively dismantle progressive political movements.
De la Espriella, a millionaire lawyer turned ultra-conservative influencer, anchors his hardline platform in deep-rooted alliances with traditional corporate elites and the global far-right.
Known for defending figures linked to right-wing paramilitary groups, he campaigns on aggressive military crackdowns and mega-prisons. [video]

I am admittedly echoing something I saw in a different post here so I am well aware that this is not an original thought for full disclosure, but I think a lot of hobbyist writers don't really like writing that much. And I don't mean that in a rude way. In fact I'm not talking about the quality of the end result at all (although admittedly I do think it often shows); I mean there is a huge contingency of people who consider themselves hobbyist writers who have pretty much made their identity as writers "I hate doing this and it sucks and I will cut every possible corner I can." It's the "no editing we post at 2:00 AM without rereading like men" syndrome. It's the constant jokes about working on 30 projects at once and never finishing a single one.
& like obviously I understand the counterargument here is that, like, keyword is hobbyist, nobody is claiming to be on par with the professionals or the greats (though, tbf, sometimes they are, read: "The Divine Comedy was fanfic"), but again this is less even a read about quality or me trying to be judgmental or critical about what these people are actually making, though I do think a lot of the "normalized" practices in hobbyist writing spaces are wildly detrimental to developing your skills as an artist, and more about the fact that these people themselves will just nakedly admit, over and over and over, that they don't really enjoy doing it? There are tens of thousands of "relatable" #writeblr posts on here that amount to "tfw you hate writing and it sucks and you don't do it." And it's like well. Idk man. I'm having fun. I'm writing because I enjoy writing, you know.
The post I saw about this suggested (and I believe they are correct) that part of the issue is that a lot of hobbyist writers are actually like, "story tellers," vaguely. They like a mix of various types of stories, movies and tv series and webcomics and video games and books, etc, and want to make their own characters and tell their own stories. As I've gotten more serious about writing novels to completion even the overwhelming monopoly that the OC industrial complex has on internet writing circles feels increasingly foreign to me because I'm so much more interested in crafting characters befitting of my stories than the other way around; a lot of people seem more interested in just developing characters, vague world-building concepts, story beats and tropes that appeal to them, than really wanting to write a story. This isn't me being mean, these posts will very often admit to it! There is a massive plethora of posts that are like "when you wanna read about your OCxOC ship but you're the only one that can write it 💔" and things of the like. But writing is probably objectively the creative medium that has the lowest barrier for entry. Everyone on tumblr to make these posts will have access to a word processor or pencil and paper. There's a much larger amount of resources and a way higher skill level necessary to, say, make your own movie, or video game, or even webcomic. But they don't really seem to enjoy it on its own at all. Tbh their time probably really would probably be better spent, like, learning to draw comics, or learning to code in Python to start making their own VN, or learning to model in Blender or animate in Flash, I think it's just a much more daunting undertaking than putting words on a page.
Anyway. Again I cannot clarify enough this isn't meant to be from a place of judgment. And I'm not saying writing is easy and fun all the time. Obviously it's not. But it's more that I think I finally noticed one of the major reasons I have such a distinct disconnect from so many online writing spaces. I have a lot of intrinsic motivation and find a lot of intrinsic joy in bringing my stories to life and I think there are a lot of people who are more interested in kind of using the medium of "writing a story" as a means-to-an-end, and there's nothing morally wrong with that, but it creates a pretty big divide in what exactly we're trying to do, sometimes. Like, I think it at least explains why every other post about writing on here amounts to "you're so valid for never finishing anything." Like you are, I guess, whatever that means, but I do actually find it more useful to actually share advice and motivation for how to complete projects than constantly reassuring each other that it's valid to derive such little enjoyment from anything you're working on.
