Various reactions to the exes being bitchy at each other
i just think if you set aside the whole âthese two feels like exesâ vibe they have in their very first scene, itâs so utterly clear from that moment that hangman wants roosters attention and he wants it bad and his brainâs helpful advice is âinsult himâ
like jake âi picked out a song thatâs about how slow and hesitant you are as a pilot but itâs also explicitly about sexâ seresin saw rooster arrive and went âah yes, hereâs my chance to get his attentionâ and that he sure does. jake âiâm going to watch you and maverick talk on the airstripâ seresin, brow furrowed as he tries to figure it all out. jake âiâve memorized your face so well that i can spot your DAD out of a blurry black and white photoâ seresin. he pushes and pushes, obviously as a defense mechanism, and then we have jake âiâm going to stare at the panel of my plane in distress as i hear that youâve been shot downâ seresin who then takes off against orders like ???
jake hangman seresin is In Love with rooster the entire time and you cannot convince me otherwise !Â
my favourite thing to notice in my rewatches is how bright and happy hangman is when he's in the cockpit - dude straight up giggly. gimme post movie fics where hangman is an openly joyous dude when he decides to drop the whole asshole shtick around his newly acquired people.
a hangster where bradley misses a note on the piano when jake giggles (!!!??) at his deadpan jokes for the first time and then realised Oh Shit that was cute, actually. a hangster fic about the zendayafication of jake hangman seresin while bradley rooster bradshaw goes Through It thinking you can't propose to someone he's not even dating just because he likes their giggle.

broke: âhangman is an asshole and an arrogant pilot and he doesnât care about anything except showing off and being the bestâ
woke: âactually, hangman is an arrogant pilot because he is that good and he acts like an asshole because he knows it riles people up and it makes him giggle and kick his feet (see: rooster and phoenix being annoyingly amused with him) and also he is pushing the people around him to be better (see: rooster, drop down and take the shot, cheering when rooster kicks ass, etc) and he is confident in his abilities and the abilities of his team when they arenât holding back and maybe heâs kinda pretty. idk.â
(this is rooster, btw.)
I just think it's special that Rooster and Hangman have kind of equal and parallel journeys in terms of character + flying development over the course of the film. What I mean is that their big individual triumphant moments in the narrative use their piloting choices to reflect emotional development. The film shows us from the start that they each have a Big Flaw--and the finale shows them overcoming these flaws.
Not only that, but the narrative uses their dynamic to introduce these individual shortcomings to us, the audience. Their first on screen conversation with each other is how we learn about their Big Flaws in the first place. Because of their relationship and the way they interact, we know how Rooster and Hangman are going to fly before we ever see them in the air.
For Rooster, it's "snug on that perch, waiting for just the right moment...that never comes.â We hear this over and over again, from both Hangman and Maverickâ"Now you got it, don't think, just do." "Rooster, you got him, drop down and take the shot!" "Too late, had your chance.â "...same old Rooster." "You're not. flying. fast enough. You don't have a second to waste." This is Roosterâs Big Flawâhe doesnât trust himself. He flies too slow, and heâs too careful, too hesitant in moments when he needs to believe in his abilities and let instinct take over. This is what Maverick and Hangman are trying to pound into his head the whoooole time.Â
And then heâs on the mission, and Fanboyâs laser doesnât work. And instead of waiting, well: "There's no time, I'm dropping blind." "Bullseye bullseye bullseye!"
This moment is HUGE for him. Fanboy is literally telling him to wait so he can line it up, and maybe a prior Rooster would have done that, but this Rooster has finally learned that he gets one chance and he has to take the shot that's in front of him. [Cue Hangman cheering.] The decision he makes as a pilot in this moment shows that he's learned what Maverick and Hangman were trying to teach him and that he's grown emotionally. He's more sure of himself nowâhe was always capable of taking the shot, but now he actually trusts himself to do it.
And then we have Hangman, Bagman, Mr. "Where's he going?" "That's why we call him Hangman, he'll always hang you out to dry." "Leaving your wingman, there's a strategy I haven't seen in a while." He's not a good team player; he flies solo both literally and metaphorically. We hear this over and over again, especially from Roosterâ"Watch your back, Phoenix." "You put your team in danger and your wingman's dead." Hangmanâs response? âThey couldn't keep up." (And I can't stop thinking about "Hangman, the only place you'll lead anyone is an early grave." There's so much history there, and so much belief from Rooster that Hangman is Not a person to depend on in a moment of crisis.)
But then, Hangmanâs ultimate moment of triumph is that he refuses to leave Maverick and Rooster hanging, that he is the one person who has their backs in a moment of crisis. We see exactly how concerned he is while waiting on the carrier, and we see him ASK to go engage in the fight to fly cover for his squad when the bandits arenât even attacking anyone yet!! Like I could seriously cry about "Dagger spare, request permission to launch and fly air cover." Because he is specifically asking so that Rooster can go back and get Mav, something that we know is completely at odds with his Big Flaw. And then we see him presumably disobey orders to show up and save Maverick and Rooster's lives anyway. He learned from Maverick and Roosterâhe's part of a team now, those are his wingmen out there, and he's not leaving them behind.Â
So the film uses their big triumphant moments in the air to show Rooster and Hangman overcoming their respective flaws. Itâs part of what makes the action of the finale so fucking good, because while yes, it is very satisfying action on its own, itâs also rooted in their character development. Weâre not just happy that Rooster made the shot, weâre happy because Rooster making the shot means something about him. Weâre happy that Hangman is the one to come through for Rooster and Mav because that means something about him and his growth.
The most iconic part is that the traits they each needed to adopt belonged to the other. Rooster is set up from the start as the pilot who wonât leave his wingman, even when itâs gonna cost himââShould be us down there.â âBut itâs not. And now you know a little something about Rooster.â This is the exact thing Hangman struggles with, and itâs what he overcomes to have his moment of triumph. Meanwhile Hangman is set up as the one who flies by instinctââYeah, youâre good, Iâll give you that.â He flies fast, he doesnât overthink, and above all, he trusts himself as a pilot. This is the exact thing Rooster struggles with, and itâs what he has to overcome to have his moment of triumph.Â
The fact that the two of them have parallel arcs like this? The fact that they both learn to be better, more complete pilots by adopting the strength that comes naturally to the other?
I just think that's beautiful.
thinkin about how hangman is seen by the dagger cohort as unpredictable/unreliable/a wildcard in the air but he is always perfectly in control of himself. throwing darts blind, changing the song on the jukebox to flirt with rattle rooster, swallowing his disappointment when mav doesnât pick him to run the mission.Â
thinkin about how rooster is seen as mr reliable/always has your back in the air but time and time again we see that heâs nowhere near in control of himself. the corkscrew cobra bs with mav, attempting to kick hangmanâs ass in front of the whole assignment, refusing to fly the sim any way other than his way to prove a spiteful point.
theyâre both told they need what the other has but the truth is theyâre mirrors, reflecting the faults and flaws they try to ignore back to one another over and over again. itâs not that hangmanâs got to rein in his impulsivity - he has to cede a bit of control and trust the team. itâs not that rooster needs to âdonât think just doâ - heâs got to stop letting his emotions dictate his flying, make a plan, and execute it without any shadow of a doubt that he can get it done.
i just *curls fist softly* fuckin love character foils.
Hangman was a maths kid in school. English was never his strong suit and numbers came much more naturally to him. So much so, that he still demonstrates this talent in the navy.
Coyote noticed this when he was trying to pay the bill at the Hard Deck, and before Penny could say the amount owed, Hangman just blurted out the total.
"How'd you get that?"
Hangman shrugged, "I counted."
"The whole night?"
"No, just now. Didn't want you paying too much."
Coyote was even more shocked when Penny said he was right.
Phoenix, the secret keeper of literally everybody, also knew of his skill when Hangman calculated the speed of a plane in his head when he only knew the distance and time.
"speed is distance divided by time" was the only explanation she got but from then on she knew.
Hangman also was the only person to keep track of the score of their football beach game, and do so accurately. But he didn't tell anyone because his team lost.
Rooster doesn't put two and two together until he finds an old report card of Hangmans and finds the A* next to maths, and suddenly remembers every time Hangman has been absurdly good with numbers.
"YOU'RE A MATH KID!"
Hangman turned to look at him, "yeah? I didn't try to keep it a secret but it wasn't a big deal. I had bigger things to worry about."
"You also got a D in english... is that why you're called Hangman? You can't spell?"
"Bradley I swear to god-"
names that bradley calls jake (that make jake blush):
princess
baby girl
pretty (not a name but)
sweet cheeks (ironically but jake loves it)
cowboy
darlinâ (mocking jakes accent, but lovingly)
beautiful

Hangman: Look, I know you think my judgement's clouded because I like Rooster a little bit.
Coyote: You doodled your wedding invitation.
Hangman: No, that's our joint tombstone.
Coyote: My mistake.
Denzel (Washington) and I formed a great relationship. When it came time to shoot in Boston, there was a guy in the movie who kept screwing up his lines. There were probably 500 extras out in the audience, all in period clothing all watching the debate. This guy lost his cool and Denzel went off on him. Then he called me up to the plate and said âGlen, do your speech.â And I went and did my speech and did it in one take, and he was like, âThatâs how itâs done.â (The Great Debaters, 2007)
