Did Science Just Solve The Mystery of Horse Domestication?
⨠Carl Hester
⨠Carl Hester & Uthopia ā When Dressage Becomes Art āØ
There are rides that impress you⦠and then there are rides that move you. This is one of those.
At the European Championships, Carl Hester and the stallion Uthopia gave a performance that still echoes through the sport ā years later. Every stride seemed to breathe. Every transition felt like a heartbeat. And together, they created something more than just a test⦠they created a moment.
š« The softness of the contact. š« The rhythm that never falters. š« The trust ā so deep, itās almost invisible.
Uthopia wasnāt the biggest or flashiest horse in the lineup, but his elegance, expression, and partnership with Carl made him unforgettable. Watching them, you see everything classical dressage is supposed to be: harmony, lightness, joy.
This isnāt competition. Itās connection. Itās the living soul of the sport. š¤

USEF makes EMERGENCY rules on Whips, Drugs and Nosebands!!
The Rules Are Changing ā and So Is the Soul of Equestrian Sport
Something big just happened in the horse world. And no, it didnāt come from a viral video or a scandalous headline. It came from a boardroom in Lexington, Kentucky.
In June 2025, the United States Equestrian Federation passed a set of emergency rule changes that might just mark the beginning of a new era.
These rules werenāt about medals. They were about ethics.
Shockwave therapy is now vet-only. Unlabeled injectables? Banned. Nosebands with abrasive interiors? Gone. Whips can no longer be used as punishment. And if you ignore a USEF investigation? That alone is now a punishable offense.
Biometric sensors ā like heart monitors and balance trackers ā are now allowed, ushering in a future where technology helps us understand, not overpower, the horse.
But it goes deeper.
Starting this December, more rules kick in. Rigid saddle attachments will be banned in certain classes. A new recorded warning system will help officials intervene earlier, before things escalate. Stronger drug penalties are on the books. And proposals for mandatory medical checks after falls are being reviewed.
This is not just paperwork. This is a shift in how the horse world talks about responsibility.
Because for decades, so much of equestrian sport was built on silence. On not asking. On "this is how it's always been."
But now? The silence is breaking.
Young riders are filming their warm-ups. Fans are asking tough questions. Vets are refusing to look the other way. And governing bodies ā at last ā are starting to listen.
These new rules are a start. Theyāre not perfect, and theyāre not everything. But they are something. A line in the sand. A signal that maybe, just maybe, weāre waking up to the fact that horses donāt exist to win us ribbons. They exist for their own sake. And itās our job to protect them.
This isn't about being anti-competition. Itās about being pro-compassion.
Because the future of equestrian sport wonāt be defined by who stands on the podium ā but by how we treat the horses who carry us there.
Letās keep asking questions. Letās keep making noise. Letās build a sport where the horse always comes first.

FEIās Emergency Ban: No More Fake Foam or Sugar Cubes!
š§¼ Lipstick or Lie? The Truth About Foamy Mouths in Dressage š“
You know that white foam that clings to a dressage horseās lips during a test? Yeah, the stuff they call ālipstick.ā š
For years, itās been praised. Admired. Even judged as a good signāproof that the horse is soft in the contact, chewing the bit, āhappy.ā
But what if itās fake?
This month, the FEI quietly dropped a major bombshell: as of June 2025, all products that cause, imitate, or enhance mouth foaming are now banned from international competition.
Mint oils. Sugar cubes. Commercial foaming agents. Gone.
Why? Because what looks like harmony could actually be hiding pain. Stress. Bleeding gums. Or a horse trying to tell us something we donāt want to hear.
And thatās the whole point. This rule isnāt about spitāitās about truth.
Because hereās the deal: ⨠Real connection doesnāt come in a bottle. ⨠You canāt buy softness. ⨠You canāt fake trust.
The updated FEI Veterinary Regulations (Article 1008, if you wanna nerd out) make it clear: if youāre using anything to artificially create the appearance of a relaxed horse, youāre breaking the rulesāand compromising welfare.
Of course, the internet has thoughts:
š£ļø āFinally! This was long overdue.ā š£ļø āBut what if my horse foams naturally?ā š£ļø āHow are they going to enforce this??ā š£ļø āAnother rule punishing the honest onesā¦ā
Itās complicated. But also really, really important.
We made a full deep-dive video about this emergency rule changeāwhat it means, why it matters, and what it says about the direction of dressage right now.
š¬ Are we judging too much by appearance? š¬ Is the sport waking up to welfare? š¬ Or are we just trading one illusion for another?
If you ride, judge, groom, or just love horsesāyouāll want to watch this one. Because the foam was never the point. And the horse? The horse always tells the truth. š

š„ UB40: The Forgotten Father Behind Dressageās Brightest Stars
š“ The Stallion No One Talks About⦠But Everyone Rides
Hey horse friends,
Letās talk about a name that rarely makes it into the spotlightābut quietly lives on in some of the greatest dressage horses of our time.
UB40.
Not the band. The horse. A stallion who never stood on an Olympic podium. Never headlined an auction. Never went viral for his passage. And yet⦠without him, names like Apache, Indian Rock, and Imposantos wouldnāt even exist.
UB40 was bred in the Netherlands in 2001. Sired by Olivi (a son of Jazz) and out of a Michelangelo mare, his pedigree was fireābut his personality was even better. He didnāt dazzle at stallion shows, but he connected with riders. He produced foals who wanted to work with you. Kind, trainable, rideable. The kind of horses who meet you halfway instead of fighting every inch of the arena.
Sound familiar?
If youāve ever loved an Apache son⦠if youāve watched Indian Rock float across the arena or Imposantos light up a freestyle⦠youāre witnessing UB40ās legacy.
š¬ And yetāhow many people even know his name?
He died quietly in 2021. No global tributes. No emotional farewells. Just gone. But if you ask a breeder āin the know,ā theyāll tell you: UB40 mattered.
He wasnāt the headline. He was the foundation. And maybe thatās even more powerful.
So hereās to UB40āthe stallion who didnāt chase fame but built a future. š¤
Let us knowāhave you ever ridden or worked with a UB40 descendant? What was your experience like?

From Olympic Legend to Public Outrage: The Heath Ryan
š“ The Fall of a Legend? Heath Ryan and the Dark Side of Horse Sport
He was an Olympian. A mentor to champions. A symbol of grit and Australian equestrian pride.
But now⦠Heath Ryan is at the center of one of the most disturbing controversies the horse world has seen in years.
In June 2025, a video surfaced showing Ryan striking a 6-year-old horse named Nico more than 40 times in a round yard. The footage is painful to watch. The horse is visibly distressed. Ryan is relentless.
He says he was saving the horseās life. That Nico was dangerous and had been slated for slaughter. Heath called it ābrutal but necessary.ā Others call it abuse.
And the fallout has been massive.
ā Equestrian Australia has suspended him pending a formal investigation. ā The FEI is conducting its own inquiry. ā The RSPCA may pursue animal cruelty charges. ā Sponsors and public support? Gone.
This isnāt just about one man. Itās about the fineāand failingāline between ātough trainingā and cruelty. Itās about a sport thatās struggling to police itself before the public loses faith altogether.
Can we still excuse these practices as āold-schoolā? Should fear ever be part of horsemanship? What does real leadership in equestrian sport look like?
Whether you think Heath Ryan is a misunderstood traditionalist or a symbol of everything that needs to change⦠One thing is clear: The world is watching. And the horses are depending on us.
š Reblog if you believe in accountability in horse sport. š¬ Drop your thoughts in the replies. Letās talk about what ethical training should look like in 2025.

FEI Investigates Heath Ryan for Whipping Abuse ā But Are They Really Pro...
š“š āIt Was Life or DeathāāBut for Who? The Heath Ryan Abuse Controversy & the Soul of Equestrian Sport
Thereās a video. A young gelding named Nico stands alone in a round pen. And an Olympic riderāHeath Ryanāwhips him. Once. Twice. Again. Over forty times.
Ryan says it was to save the horseās life. That Nico was dangerous. That this was the only way.
But if youāve watched it, you know. It doesnāt look like compassion. It looks like control. It looks like punishment. It looks like abuse.
The video was filmed in 2021. It didnāt surface until just a few weeks ago. And only thenāafter it went viralādid the consequences begin.
š„ Sponsors dropped him. š„ The FEI suspended him. š„ The RSPCA launched an investigation.
And yet, weāre still left with this haunting question:
Why did it take a viral video to force action?
If the FEI truly cared about welfare, why didnāt they already know? How many other "Nicos" are out thereāhorses suffering behind closed doors?
This isnāt just about Heath Ryan. Itās about a sport that has failed to protect the very animals it claims to honor.
We say we care about welfare. We say dressage is built on harmony. But too often, it takes blood, bruises, and blurry phone footage to spark outrage.
We need to do better.
We need: ā ļø Anonymous reporting hotlines ā ļø Real-time inspections at elite barns ā ļø Mandatory welfare training for professionals ā ļø Whistleblower protection ā ļø A system that catches cruelty before the camera does
Because horses deserve more than excuses. They deserve safety. They deserve respect. They deserve better.
This isnāt just a scandal. Itās a wake-up call. For every rider. Every fan. Every federation.
š¬ Reblog to raise awareness. š¬ Comment with your thoughts. š¬ Ask the FEI why theyāre still reacting instead of leading.

Apache: A Controversial Icon Who Reshaped Modern Dressage
š„ Apache: The Stallion Who Set Dressage on Fire
Some horses follow tradition. Apache broke it.
Born in 2005 and gone too soon in 2021, Apache wasnāt just a dressage stallion. He was a phenomenon. A rebel. A flame that refused to flicker quietly.
Sired by UB40 (by Olivi, from the great Jazz line), he had pedigree royalty behind himābut he didnāt coast on it. From his earliest days at the KWPN licensing, he was divisive. Judges saw potential, but they also saw defiance.
He wasnāt an easy horse. He was a necessary one.
Apacheās brilliance exploded when he was paired with Dutch rider Emmelie Scholtens. Together, they pushed boundaries. His trot was electric. His presence? Unmistakable. But with the fame came criticismātight neck, flashy front-end, questionable canter mechanics.
The internet had opinions. A lot of them.
Was Apache a product of a flawed system? Or was he showing us what modern dressage was becomingālike it or not?
š„ Still, he rose. š„ Still, he won. š„ And more than anythingāhe bred.
Apacheās legacy lives through his offspring. ⨠Indian Rock ⨠Hot Chocolate ⨠Gio ā the āpocket rocketā that helped Charlotte Dujardin medal in Tokyo.
These arenāt just horses. They are echoes of Apacheās fire.
And yet⦠just as the world was starting to truly understand his power, he was gone.
Laminitis. 2021. Age 16. Too soon. Too tragic. Too much left to do.
But Apache didnāt just leave offspring. He left a mirrorāheld up to the face of dressage.
And the question it reflects?
Where are we going?
Are we choosing brilliance at the cost of balance? Expression at the risk of soundness? Flash over function?
Or was Apache simply ahead of his time?
š½ļø Weāve just posted a video on our channel diving deep into Apacheās storyāfrom stallion show to Grand Prix ring, from controversy to legacy. š¶ And yes, it ends with that freestyle.

The Spanish Riding School Grand Finale Like Youāve Never Seen: 450 years...
šļøāØ The Grand Finale ā A Love Letter to the Spanish Riding School āØšļø
Imagine this:
You're standing beneath glittering chandeliers in a white-marble hall in Vienna. The silence is sacred. Then, the music begins. A line of snow-white stallions enters, their riders dressed in ceremonial tailcoats and bicorne hats. What follows is not just a performanceāit's a living piece of history.
Welcome to the Grand Finale of the Spanish Riding School. Welcome to 450 years of tradition, preserved in motion.
š The Lipizzaner stallionsāicons of classical dressageāmove with quiet strength and precision. Every piaffe, passage, and capriole isn't just a trick⦠it's a legacy. These were once battlefield maneuvers. Now, they're high art.
š« This is Haute Ćcole, where the bond between horse and rider goes beyond words. No loud cues. No flashy gear. Just subtlety, discipline, and absolute trust.
And the Quadrille? Itās like watching a waltz on horseback. Four to eight horses in perfect unison, every step choreographed down to the heartbeat.
But hereās the part that hits the soul: This isnāt for competition. There are no scores. Itās for tradition. For beauty. For memory.
š°ļø Every Grand Finale marks the end of a journeyāfor the stallions whoāve trained since age 4, for the riders whoāve spent over a decade learning the craft, and for us, the audience, reminded that not everything beautiful needs to be judged.

How to Ice Your Horseās Legs Like a Pro š§ | Magic Gel Horse Ice Boots Re...
š§ My Horses LOVE These Ice Boots (And Honestly⦠So Do I) #equestrianlife #horsehealth #barnhacks #tackreview
Hey horse friends š
I have to share this because itās seriously changed my post-ride routineāand my horses are better for it.
Iāve been using the Magic Gel Ice Boots lately, and WOW. These boots are now a non-negotiable part of my cool-down routine, especially after harder rides or for any of my arthritic kiddos.
Hereās why Iām obsessed: ā The Velcro? Actually strong. Iāve had mine over a year and they still stick like new. ā Individually stitched gel cells = super flexible. They mold to the leg, even around fetlocks + hooves. ā They come in singles or pairs, which is great if you need to replace one. ā My horses literally lick and chew when I put them on. I think they like the way it feels. šš
I ice for 15 minutes per leg after tough rides or when legs look stocked up. And tbh? I see a real differenceālegs look tighter, cooler, and healthier.
Also? No drama. Iāve even left them on while the horses are in their stalls. Some of them donāt even try to take them off. š¤Æ
So if youāre on the fence about icingāor like me, forgot how helpful it can beāconsider this your sign. These boots are easy, safe, and they just work.
If anyone wants a demo or has questions about using them with founder, stocking up, or after workouts, just message me! Iām happy to share more. š¬

He Sired Lord Leatherdale⦠and Then He Was Gone | The Untold Story of Lo...
āØš“ Lord Loxley: The Stallion Who Stole Hearts š“āØ
Not every legend needs a gold medal. Some simply need a kind eye, a soft step⦠and a soul that shines.
This is the story of Lord Loxleyā A stallion whose elegance was matched only by his heart.
Born in 1999, Lord Loxley was a dark bay Rhinelander bred from greatnessāsired by Lord Sinclair, out of a Weltmeyer mare. His bloodlines promised brilliance.
But it wasnāt just about movement. It was about presence. Even as a foal, he didnāt just walk into a paddockāhe glided. And more importantly, he connected.
š« In 2004, he became Bundeschampion of 5-year-old dressage horses, earning sky-high scores and endless admiration. But beyond the numbers, riders described him as a dream.
āHe wanted to dance with you,ā said trainer Heiner Schiergen.
He could have gone all the way to Grand Prix. But his true calling? Becoming one of Europeās most beloved and influential sires.
š¹ Sire of Lord Leatherdale, the father of Glamourdale š¹ Creator of countless premium foalsāathletic, intelligent, and kind š¹ A gentle, curious soul who made every handler feel seen
Later in life, he lived at Gestüt Sonnenhof, where he found his best friend and rider, Chloé Morris Talbot.
āHe gave me everything,ā she said. āHe made me who I am.ā
šÆļø On September 8, 2022, Lord Loxley passed from colic at the age of 23. He was surrounded by love.
And across the world, riders, breeders, and fans didnāt just mourn a stallion. They mourned a friend.
š He didnāt need the Olympics. He had something more powerful: Trust. Love. Legacy.
Every time Glamourdale enters the ring, Every time a foal carries his bounce and bravery, Lord Loxley lives on.

š Glamourdale Then vs. Now āUH OH What Changed??? | Stallion Testing
⨠From Baby Stallion to Global Star: But at What Cost? āØ
Okay horse friends⦠letās talk about Glamourdale.
I just watched two videos side by sideāone from his early stallion testing days when he was about 3 or 4, and another of him later on being ridden by Lottie Fry. And wow. Thereās a lot to unpack.
In the first video, heās tense (who wouldnāt be in that environment?), but even thenāyou can see him tracking up, swinging through his back, and trying his best to stay supple. Thereās a youthful looseness to him. Yes, heās out behind at moments, but heās trying.
Fast forward a few years⦠and things look different. The hind legs? Not tracking up the same. The back? Tighter. The rider? Getting left behind the motion. And it made me start asking:
š Are we rushing these horses too fast? š Are we breeding for front-end flash instead of long-term rideability? š Are we putting our best riders upāor just the most marketable ones? š And is anyone talking about how much time it takes to build strength, confidence, and true self-carriage?
Iām not here to bash Glamourdaleāheās stunning and obviously insanely talented. But itās not about him. Itās about the system. And whether the sport is pushing these horses to be āperfectā before theyāre ready.
Also⦠did anyone else notice the saddle slipping to the right? š Or that curb looking tight? I swear, every time I re-watch, I see something new.
Anyway. Iām not saying I have all the answers. But I am saying we need to talk about this stuff moreāopenly, honestly, and without fear of being labeled a hater just because we care about the horses first.
š¬ Reblog if youāve noticed similar things in other young dressage stars. Letās make space for nuance in this sport.
