Angela Bettis as Carrie White via 2002
i have to draw scarrie fanart i think.... god himself whispered in my ear and told me
My hottest Carrie take is that none of the adaptations come close to the empathy that King has for Carrie as a character in the book. Every adaptation sands down Carrie's more unappealing (by societal standards) traits to make her a tragic, saintly figure who snapped that night. The book doesn't do that. It doesn't matter that Carrie is a "frog among swans" who had violent fantasies and parroted her mother's religious rhetoric to classmates. She is still Carrie White, an abused girl who didn't deserve anything that happened to her.
My brain eating amoebas…..
i do dislike when people decry the visual adaptations of carrie for failing to cast an ugly actress. like first of all, that would be a crazy way to talk about a real life living actress—like, "finally! a book accurate carrie! she's ugly as shit," but also because carrie is never described as being ugly. she's fat and has acne. she's described as beautiful a few times by the end of the book. we can of course have a conversation about how 'ugly' girls and women are abused and ostracized by society and we can have a discussion about how those we don't view as conventionally attractive are just as deserving of empathy and respect as literally anyone else, but this doesn't seem to be the conversation that people are getting at when they insist that Carrie must be ugly. it reads more like someone hasn't read the book in ten years and only remembers that she's fat and has pimples and for some reason in their mind that equals ugly. and i just feel like thats an interesting way to think about a very normal state of being for teenage girls—infamously a demographic that is very insecure about their looks.

Carrie (2002)
reread the book lmfao
Carrie! almost finished the audiobook
the linework is weird. Im not ai im just high as shit and kept messing up on the linework so i just decided to give up and not fix it
just saw pictures from mike flanagan carrie
okay serious fucking question, must he de-fang every female character he touches?
mike, it's actually more interesting for audiences that margaret is an abusive religious fundie (and also a victim of marital rape) who tries to literally beat the idea of sin into her daughter, it is actually TIMELY to adapt that correctly at this particular american moment. WHY is he so scared of every piece of source material that has ever been handed to him? i MUST know
you're laughing, mike flanagan wants to do gilmore girls with telekinetic rage and you're laughing
what if carrie was about a young witch searching for a missing cat in the alps
I don't know horror really, but it sounds like he's going for like the ultimate helicopter "won't someone think of the children" parent and like the problems maybe having to deal with things not being safe?
the thing is, margaret white is not a "won't someone think of the children" fundie, you wouldn't catch her at a moms for liberty meeting. she likely never wanted to be a mother. she is a "sex is fundamentally evil" fundie who beats her child with little to no remorse. she sees carrie as being demonic. like, if "helicopter parent" is flanagan's interpretation, it sucks. Badly. she doesn't want to create a "private utopia" for carrie, she's punishing her for the crime of being conceived which is why carrie Has to kill her in the end (after she fatally stabs her first). i think the tragedy at the heart of the gothic domestic horror of carrie is that carrie has only had her mother and her mother has never wanted her
