SNL is a big deal for me. When I was a fat pudgy numbskull middle school boy (instead of being a fat, normal height numbskull man), I spent many a-afternoon watching reruns of SNL on Comedy Central from the late-80’s, early-90’s (first 10 years of Lorne’s second stint). That’s what MADE me such a fan of comedy.
If you asked me who my favorite cast member was, though, I’d go back to the 70’s. The Golden Age. The Not Ready for Primetime Players. When they started showing those reruns with regularity 10 years ago, I was excited to see young versions of Aykroyd, Murray, and Chase, guys who dominated the 80’s comedy movies I grew up with. But as I watched them, I fell in love with Gilda Radner. I mean fell hard. She made comedy seem so natural. She had perfect timing and always controlled the sketch.
But we talk of so many legendary cast members. Belushi, Aykroyd, Murray, Chevy, Eddie, Farley, Ferrell, Hartman, and, for a while, Dana Carvey was my SNL hero. And when we talk of women of SNL, it seems now that Tina (ugh) and Amy are talked about. But, Gilda was better than all of them, imo. Belushi was close, and watching those two in a sketch is a secret perfection.
Yesterday and Today, the TV has had 70’s SNL on, as a marathon leading to the 40th Anniversary Special tomorrow night (which I am excited for). But I am reminded that Gilda obviously will be missing, as we have missed her for 25 years. I was only 2 when she died, and it sucks that when I watch these reruns, it feels so far away because of that.
Here’s to Gilda Radner.
