The holy grail of searching through academic literature is coming across a string of publications that are like:
Hereās An Idea. Smith et al. 2016
Terrible Idea; a comment on Smith et al. 2016. Johnson 2016.
Youāre Wrong Too; a response to Johnson 2016. Nelson 2016.
Guys Just Stop Fighting, None Of Us Know Whatās Going On; a Review of the Current Literature. McBrien 2017.
Butt Out, McBrien. Smith, Johnson, and Nelson 2018.

Are you American?
sure i guess sex is okay but have you ever closed a dozen tabs after finishing an academic paper
fun fact about the next avengers film being filmed in edinburgh: theyāve blocked off certain areas which is disrupting one specific postal vanās delivery route which is in turn leading to an awkward stand-off at the police station because Marvel Studios might be a billion dollar company but this man really wants to do his job and apparently interfering with the course of the Royal Mail technically counts as treason so theyāre at a stalemate
this is the best thing iāve heard all day
Scotland, everybody.
Who would win in a fight: a billion dollar superhero film franchise at the top of its game or one (1) Scottish mailman.

Is this why we created SEMs? to look at salt?

something that I think about a lot in academia is - I donāt know how else to put this - but lineage.Ā
Who your PI is. Who they did their PhD and Postdocs with. Who shared offices and who graduated together. The prestige (or lack thereof) that seems to come with who and where, sometimes more than the what.
Itās a strange thing and I think itās something that makes it even more difficult for women and other minorities. We arenāt easily accepted to a long line of white men as our academic history, because the women and people of colour who did amazing things were so often erased and discredited.
It also makes it difficult for universities that are forming new research departments, groups and doing great work. Without that lineage, they arenāt seen asĀ āas goodā and that makes it even harder for them to improve. It shuts out new ideas. So many different ideas.Ā
I hope that things can improve in the future and that we can build an academy thatās open to new ideas and doesnāt care about where you come from as much.
Ah yes. The academic family tree pops up a lot more than you would initially think⦠And you donāt have to go back that far to start feeling out of place if youāre a minority in any sense (gender, race, etc.).
And it can carry a surprising amount of weight, tooā¦and kind of results in this āinbreedingā if you will, which can shut out newcomers to the fieldā¦
This really comes into play with respect to the job market as well. Like, who you do or PhD and postdoc with (and how prestigious the school/program is) makes a big different in whether you can get an academic job or not. Like, thereās so much good science that gets done at schools that arenāt considered prestigious and itās so much harder for those people to find jobs/get published/have their work recognized, regardless of the quality of their work
do kids these days know about grace kelly by mika
WHAT. IS. THIS. SORCERY.
1. i canāt believe there are people in the world who havenāt heard this
2. go check out mika heās great - important to note is that heās mlm (heās come out alternately as being gay, bisexual andĀ ānot interested in labelsā for a while) and a huge amount of his songs are about being mlm so in particular if ya need good mlm artists check him out
Seriously Mika is a gift and sunshine unto this sick sad world
mika is wildly popular in europe but his north american fanbase is like, six people and a napkin, and itās killing me.Ā
ALSO, he came out as bisexual/ānot interested in labelsā like a decade ago, but much more recently he came out as gay, so heās gay! his latest album, No Place In Heaven, is almost completely about being gay. itās got a song abt his sexuality and his religion, a song abt pining for your straight best friend, a song abt the music world that includes the lyrics āwhere have all the gay guys gone?ā, a song abt gay and lesbian solidarity, a song abt heterosexual expectations from family, and two songs that are just abt being super ridiculously in love w your partner.
please listen to Mikaās entire discography because there are a LOT of classics that iām 100% sure youāve heard at some point in your life, all the love songs are implicitly gay, itās great, but ESPECIALLY listen to No Place In Heaven (2015).
it always surprises me to remember that mika isnāt actually a part of the global populaceās general consciousness
because his debut album, life in cartoon motion, was such a huge part of my generationās tween and teen years
like, i guarantee you, you can walk up to any swedish millennial, and they will still know every single line of his song lollipop
it was just a part of our upbringing;
become a crippling anxious mess
develop an attitude problem
and memorize all of mikaāsĀ lollipop
This is the song of his I remember being popular here in Ireland, Love Today!
I LOVE MIKA
Grace Kelly was such a big song for me⦠Itās hard for me to believe itās considered an older song now. Bless, Mika. Heās just a wonderful person.
Mika was such a massive part of my childhood, itās bizarre that some people havenāt heard his music š
I love Mika, these are his lyrics that always stuck with me from Billy Brown:
Oh Billy Brown had lead an ordinary life
Two kids a dog then a cautionary wife
And when it was all going according to plan
Billy Brown fell in love with another man

Taking ages to do or understand something is fine when you first do/learn it and it's difficult. Everyone does it sometimes, it doesn't mean you aren't clever.
What separates the successful from the unsuccessful is the efficiency with which you do/learn the easy things.
Don't waste time dawdling on your easy work, get on with it so you have the time for the important stuff.

I saw a post from a lesbian complaining that bisexual women always ended up dating men so I thought I would do the statistics to show why that is.
Iām hoping to prove that it isnāt because bisexual women are secretly straight, but actually just because of population statistics.
I am in the UK so I have used the UK office of national statistics data from 2015 for this. I have had to omit asexuals and many other groups from this, not because I didnāt want to include them, but just because I couldnāt find reliable data on them.
Taking the population of the UK over the age of 20 (ie. of actually datable age) there wereĀ 24754886 men andĀ 25437414 women in the UK. This gives a total datable population ofĀ 50192300 adults who a bisexual female could theoretically be attracted to. So far so good, looks like thereās plenty of fish in the bisexualās sea.
But now let us take into account the sexual preference of those fish to see whether they would be attracted back to the bisexual female in question. Letās make a list of those who might fancy our sexy bi lady back:
- straight men (97.9% of men)
- bisexual men (0.5% of men)
- lesbian women (0.7% of women)
- bisexual women (0.8% of women)
You can see where this is going. But converting those percentages into numbers of people for whom a feasible relationship could occur with the bisexual female gives:
- straight men (24235033)
- bisexual men (123774)
- lesbian women (178062)
- bisexual women (203499)
This gives a total ofĀ 24740369 total mates for our lovely lady, approximately half of the number of people she could be attracted to. Pretty much all of the people who are not attracted to her back are straight women with a small proportion coming from gay men.
So what proportion of the theoretically possible mates for our bisexual female are also female?
Well 24358808 men could be attracted to her back but only 381561 women.Ā
That works out as a 98.5% chance that she will end up finding reciprocal romance with a man, and only a 1.5% chance that she will find a reciprocally loving relationship with a woman.
I couldnāt find any statistics on the percentage of bi women in relationships with other women so I canāt compare this to reality.
But it seems to me that if a bi woman is in a relationship with a man, itās probably because sheās got a significantly better chance of meeting a man who likes her back than a woman who does.
And maybe if a particular bi woman isnāt dating you, itās not because sheās secretly straight, it might just be because youāre a wanker.
