of course, you don't know that Simon, the Knight that sometimes guards your door, is also the dragon you see on the mountains just behind your castle home. you don't think to put two and two together. why would you?

the knight has always been kind to you, in his own way. he doesn't offer you a smile when you step out of your room or offer you his hand when you step out of your carriage. he's just not that kind of knight.

but simon is the kind of knight to grab you and move you out of the way of danger. whether that's a puddle you're about to step in, or an arrow fired at you (he's used his armor to deflect those before. your father held a feast in his honor. said it's the bravest thing he'd ever seen). he'll threaten the castle staff saying anything bad about you and make sure the taster is there to check your food for poison.

his kindness might be more subtle, but it's still there.

but you've got no reason to think he's a dragon.

his body transforms, becoming impossibly large and scaled. hands become claws and wings sprout from his back. obsidian horns twist from his head. he's impressive, but he's dangerous.

you're watching him, but he's watching you, too. nights like this where he can't be there in person to protect you, so he watches from the mountain.

but you eventually ask him. when he's in his human form, guarding your door, you step out.

"simon," you say, voice meek like you don't have all the power here (you do).

he grunts and looks down at you.

you're clutching your book to your chest. he can just about see the title. dragons: a history.

and he's not scared. he should be, but he's not. denial is his greatest weapon. and without that, he has fire.
