She met her stare with an icy one of her own and said nothing, a confirmation in of itself, the corners of her mouth twitching up in a smirk. When Saskia averted her gaze she watched her just a moment longer, both in amusement and unwavering assertion. It was Nadine’s game they were playing, no matter what else she thought, or the kind of master manipulator she saw herself as, and she’d always have the upper hand. “True,” she gave in and shrugged, attention shifting to the fresh cocktail in front of her. Her demeanor didn’t change, despite knowing they had an audience now, but she did find it cute, how Saskia seemed to put her game face on. “Buttered you up, didn’t I,” she said over her glass, brow raised, and paused for a sip. “I’ll be nice.” As much as she didn’t feel like entertaining this guy, whoever he was, she was curious to see her like this, and how far she’d go to crack a case. If she’d humiliate herself.
“So, anything I should know?” In her periphery, their suspect moved from his spot at the bar, and she was subtle, voice low but not so low that it appeared they were whispering. “If I’m catching a predator I’d like a little heads up.” As usual she hated sharing and so she hoped that whatever this guy’s deal was it wouldn’t take too much of their time. Not when the two of them had just started catching up. A voice cleared beside them and she looked up, expression pleasant but not all that surprised. Men liked this: women who knew their worth but also, for whatever reason, were delighted by their presence. He thanked her for the drink, asked why she sent it his way, and she played it coy, said it looked like he needed one. When he told her she looked familiar she simply smiled and introduced herself, first name only, then looked to Saskia, giving her an in to the conversation.
When it came to mind games Saskia was no match for Nadine, that had become clear going back and forth every time they crossed paths. Saskia had never claimed that she could outsmart her on that front but she certainly felt that she was better, older, and wiser than to give into her bouts. Which was specifically why she had gone out of her way to avoid these encounters, to save her own peace. But it seemed no matter how much she tried to pull away from her old friends they still gravitated towards each other like magnets, with just about the same push and pull. "Yes. When I was under the impression that we were equals. You know, something like partners. I will say, you're a better actress than you're given credit." Downing the rest of her drink in one shot. Drinking on the job wasn't usually one of her no gos, since she didn't want her judgement clouded, but as the situation developed she couldn't help herself.
"He's a pretty powerful lawyer, a high ranking member of our local government, and one of the last people seen talking to Laurel the day she disappeared." She left that last detail for the end of her list of reasons she was looking into this particular guy unsure of how Nadine would react. Unsure if it would pique her curiosity or send her packing. Everyone else seemed to want to move on, to leave it an open and shut case, Nadine especially. Which was fair given how hard they had tried to implicate her as the prime suspect for so long. But Saskia had never really been able to get past it. It felt like a failure on her part, for her to spend so long on the case only to come up with cold trails and little evidence despite everything pointing to foul play. No matter how cruel the girl had been it didn't feel right to not try to get her some kind of justice, to not get the truth of what happened. "So you can go after you introduce yourself if you want. But i'm seeing how much I can get out of this guy." Saskia said in a reassuring tone, letting it be clear that she wouldn't actually judge if this was out of Nadine's comfort zone. This line of work could be dangerous and umcomfortable and in all the years she had known the other girl she had known survival to be her top priority. She introduced herself with a toothy smile and cheerful disposition, making up some last minute emergency to give Nadine an out if she wanted it.
