Storytime: Discord and freshmen
So I made a Discord server for my students (college freshmen) where I post their homework assignments, they can post notes/ questions/requests for assistance etc. and it generally facilitates them being much more conversant with each other (I get fewer emails when they have an easy way to consult classmates without having to ask for contact info etc. because they’re all awkward babies). So I’m a fan. What I didn’t anticipate was that A. they requested a Memes tab and regularly post in it and B. They use the General tab to trash talk each other during group work/writing workshops in class. I was wondering why several of the guys who sit on opposite sides of the room all burst out laughing at the same time today and didn’t realize until after class that they had been @ing each other about who was better at finding and correcting passive voice. And then one of them accidentally used the passive voice in his trash talking and the others destroyed him. I support this. I think.
