‘Tis Necromancy season! Autumn – the Dying Time – when the lines that bissect fade into a liminal channel. Of course, the Dead are never far from me, but not all share my inclinations. For those of you seeking temporary “admittance” into the world of the Dead, I’ve brought to you a ritual that might allow you to ride the boundary. In essence, it is similar in part to me previous post Walking on Water (about hedgeriding), though with the specific purpose of contacting the Cold Ones.

The process – in theory – is quite simple, though some will undoubtedly find it easier than others based on their own innate talents. Regardless, it should allow for contact in one form or another.

Things You Will Need:

A Shovel/Spade

Mugwort, dried

Wormwood, dried

Mullein, dried

Rolling Paper/Emptied Cigarette

Liquid Oil (of your choosing)

Preparation:

Begin by drawing the following sigil on a square of paper. Burn the paper in a fire-safe dish or your working vessel – such as a pot or cauldron. Collect the ashes and add them to a few tablespoons of oil, mixing thoroughly. If you desire, you can warm the oil and add in some black wax shavings to give it a more robust, black color.

Take your rolling paper/empty cigarette tube and roll or stuff with a mixture of the above herbs. Don’t worry – wormwood has a surprisingly light taste when smoked, nothing like its brewed taste. Feel free to add in lavender, bay, marigolds, or thyme for added flavor and effectiveness. Tobacco may also be added, as it too has connotations with the dead. If you are unfamiliar with rolling, smoking (though this blend – sans tobacco – should have little to no longstanding effects on health, as none are addictive, mullein has even been used to aid smokers in quitting) or prefer otherwise, they can be burned as a loose incense on a briquette – if you choose the latter root, I’d say opt as well for a bit of sandalwood.

Ritual:

When night has set in and you’ve made your preparations, take your oil, smoke/incense and shovel/spade to a nearby graveyard – one that is comforting and secluded being the best, though if you wish to make contact with a particular spirit, it would be ideal to go to their grave (if possible). Pay the Gatekeeper, and make your way to the center or a crossroads if one exists. Once you have found an appropriate location that suits you, take your shovel (this is why seclusion is best – you don’t want to get thrown in the pokey for “attempted grave-robbing”) and dig into the earth. You don’t need to dig far, only six inches or so, loosening the dirt. Remove your shoes.

Center yourself, taking a few deep breaths. Light your cigarette/incense, breathing in the smoke (for those of you who aren’t seasoned smokers, do not breath the smoke directly into your lungs – first draw it into your mouth, then into the lungs… unless there also happens to be marijuana involved, in which case, straight to the lungs). Close your eyes, calm yourself and relax. Don’t let the graveyard intimidate you. When you feel ready – slip your feet into the earth, covering them with the removed dirt. Pat the oil onto the lids of your eyes – using it in moderation. It will makes your eyes feel strange and your lashes stick together – but only momentarily.

Verbalize your request. Ask that you might be allowed (temporary) entry into realm of the Dead. If you wish to speak to a specific person, ask them (nicely) to present themselves. The Dead are not seen with the eyes – remember that. And pay close attention to your intuition. You will feel their presence when they arrive. Trust yourself and your abilities and you should have no problem. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring an offering to leave for their help.

Negative energies, pesky beings, and malevolent spirits can plague anyone who does spiritual work, or even those who don’t. It’s important to know how to banish a negative entity or to free a loved one from a negative attachment. You can also use this to powerfully shield a dwelling you newly reside in, like a house or apartment.

After following my suggestions, I highly recommend you shield. Here’s a post I made on shielding. 

Banishing a Negative Spirit

To banish a spirit, you want to take some time to meditate and imagine yourself glowing bright white. Here’s a sort of step by step meditation guide that I use for my own personal practice:

Sit calmly and take a second to breathe. Sometimes dealing with negative spirits can be intimidating and frightening, so you want to calm yourself down. Don’t worry about totally clearing your mind, no matter what state you’re in, this banishing will work. All you need to do is intend for it to work and it will! 

Once calmer and in a state where you can do a small meditation, hold your palms in a way that seems like you could create a ball of energy in them. Imagine a ball of pure, hot, bright white light forming between them. 

You can say an affirmation like “I am pure light and pure love. I have the universe’s protection and, with that, nothing negative can interfere with my actions and intentions. This light that grows from me will banish anything negative or malevolent from my space.” Saying something like this automatically makes it so this banishing will work. The universe won’t let you down. 

Imagine, with your mind’s eye, this ball of light growing and growing, being fueled from a cord of strong energy from the middle of your torso, just above your navel and below your ribs. This is your power center, your solar plexus. This light you are creating is ultimately powerful. You can also call on your spirit guides to help fuel this light, knowing only spirits that come in pure light and love can enter this space to aid you. 

Once you feel this light growing and growing:

Imagine a huge orb of white light growing and expanding. As it does this, all negative energy and spirits are pushed away and are unable to enter anywhere this light passes over.

Imagine the light expanding in the room or space. If there are walls, see it press against the them, sealing itself with a bright white bolt of light on the seams of the walls, floor, and ceiling. 

Keep imagining this expanding and expanding, and you can say an affirmation like "This light is universal love and protection, and will cleanse everywhere it touches from all negativity or malevolent energy. No spirit with ill intentions can survive here, and no spirit can trespass here after the light passes. It is forever protected by the light in my and the light of the whole universe.”

Imagine the light growing as large as you want, definitely throughout the entire house or dwelling you are in. You can travel with your minds eye through each room, seeing it glittering with bright white light, completely freed of negative energy.

If you wish to continue cleansing the space around you, you can expand this light as large as your street, city, country, the world, the universe and it provides healing space in all of these areas. Just to banish a spirit from your dwelling, though, you don’t need to do this. All you need to do is seal this light around your dwelling, knowing that once it has touched the dwelling, it will permanently protect it. 

To protect or cleanse people you know:

Spirits can cling to people and objects, and you can use this technique to cleanse a negative attachment from either.

Stay with the bright light, feeling it radiant and powerful, and imagine the person or object in your mind. 

Swirl this light around and through them or the object. Thoroughly imagine them, and run this light in and around them as much as you feel is needed. This cleanses them from all negative energy inside them, and all negative attachments around them. Most likely, you’ll get a sense if there’s something negative on them and the white energy will wipe it right away as soon as you sense it. Know that you are powerful, because you’re channeling all the light in the universe and that this will work, no matter what. You can do this to objects by slightly adapting the meditation.

If you wish to further protect them, imagine this light clinging to them like a glowing skin tight body suit. It fits exactly around them and protects them with universal light and love. 

Also, if the person is possessed, you can imagine this light like a forceful wave that rushes through them, carrying the negative or unwanted spirit out of their body with it. 

To end the banishing: 

If you wish, you can repeat the above affirmations about how this light is permanent protection and that nothing negative can exist in the spaces you just cleansed. 

Slowly imagine the light traveling back in your abdomen, feeling a strong and warm center there, a protection that is always with you. 

Begin to come back to your body (if you imagined yourself elsewhere, imagine yourself where your body is and in the same pose). 

Slowly wiggle your fingers and toes, opening your eyes when you’re ready. I advise sitting for a little after, and not doing any extreme exertion for around a half an hour.

If you find yourself stressed or simply desire a different form of meditation, go ahead and pick one, or, better yet, have your tarot tell you which meditation you should do!

0. Fool – meditate to some calming music, find a nice track and let it fill your mind and body

1. Magician – recite a mantra of some sort, word or phrase, pick something meaningful to you, not just what the internet suggests

2. High Priestess – the practice of attending: look at and assess each thought you have as you meditate

3. Empress – focus on self-love, find things you appreciate about yourself, let love fill you and your soul

4. Emperor – count your heartbeats or your breaths 

5. Hierophant – take this time to recite a prayer to a higher being, speak a blessing of some sort, or your equivalent

6. Lovers – send love, good vibes, and blessings to a loved one

7. Chariot – focus on each body part separately, flexing and relaxing each part from your toes to your head

8. Strength – stand up and do the sun salutation or a similar yoga exercise, or if you’d rather, go work out

9. Hermit – ask a deep, philosophical question and ponder on it for awhile

10. Wheel – diaphragmatic breathing: breath deeply from the diaphragm, so your stomach moves but your chest does not

11. Justice – find five things or people you are grateful for and meditate on them

12. Hanged Man – the practice of mindfulness: simply let your thoughts pass by as you meditate, not focusing on anything in particular

13. Death – take a short nap! please wake up, though

14. Temperance – the practice of visualization: visualize your dreams about the future

15. Devil – focus on each sense individually, what do you feel, hear, see, if you want you can eat a small treat and focus on what you taste

16. Tower – candle meditation: focus on a flame, image of a flame, or some sort of object

17. Star – take a bath or shower and focus on the water cleansing both your body and mind

18. Moon – acknowledge your worries, then give them up or let them go to a higher being

19. Sun – sit in sunlight or other bright light and focus on the brightness, draining all your negativity away to be replaced with positivity

20. Judgment – focus on the energy within, how it interacts with the earth and others around you

21. World – stand up and take a walk, preferably walk outside through nature
