Roberto has agreed to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender finally, taking our relationship to a whole new level. I'm learning a lot about myself.
I'm filled with "fun" facts for him. Some are mildly interesting to him. E.g., "Listen, it's Mark Hamill!" "Listen, it's Jason Isaacs!" "Listen, it's George Takei!"
And he's been sure to let me know some are not interesting at all. E.g., "There was a 6-month break between these two episodes. It was really rough." "This scene was like the holy grail for Zutara shippers." "There were two different Korean animation studios producing alternate episodes. I can tell which is which by the way the eyes are drawn."
I've also realized just how much time I spent stepping through my old .AVI files frame-by-frame to make LiveJournal icons and forum signatures ("gifs" as they are now known) and music videos. 11 years later and I still remember exactly how each shot looks, how each character turns their head to the side, walks across the screen, raises their arms, the expressions they make, etc.
And the funniest thing is how normal this all was to me when I was 12-15 years old. In college, and now, I don’t seem like this type of nerd to people who know me. Freshman year, after revealing a little bit of what I knew about web design, one girl remarked, “Sarah, I feel like you’re secretly a huge nerd!” And I was like, “Secretly?” It’s like sometime around the end of high school I migrated from the underground nerd world (which I lived in due to being homeschooled) into the mainstream. But the nerd world is still so near and dear to my heart--I just didn’t have time to continue living in both!
