Minimalism started in the early 1960s in New York. The term minimalism is used when describing paintings and sculptures that embrace simplicity, in both content and form, and aim to remove any sign of personal expressivity. The sculptures were often fabricated from industrial materials.

Minimalist art eliminated all represational imagery and illusionistic pictorial space and replaced it with a single image, often composed and arranged according to a grid.

The aim of Minimalism is to allow the viewer to experience the work more intensely without the distractions of composition, theme and so on.
