So, thanks to a good health day, I was able to see the Backrooms movie! And while my sibling took away a more anti-AI message from it, I ended up thinking a lot more on the themes of misogyny and the psychology behind it, so I'm putting my thoughts here
Spoilers for the movie below the cut!
So a lot of this is copy+pasted from messages I sent on discord a few minutes ago bc I don't want to retype it all, but:
I really liked the portrayal of a man blaming everyone else for his failures, while the movie reiterates the distortion of facts and memories that takes place within an individual. His truth is so because he remembers it that way, distorted in the way he, likely subconsciously, had chosen. Also, the way he sees himself as entitled to everything, from his wife to an imagined future to the backrooms itself ("this is my house"), as well as its inhabitants, the last one for his own literal consumption. "The best part is... you can eat them," shocked the theater I was in, but I think it fits his character perfectly. To him, the people in the backroom are lesser than him, and he's perfectly justified in tearing chunks out of them with his bare hands to eat. It's his house, and his domain, his wife
And at the end he was so confident in his dominion over the Backrooms that he was trying to reason with the monster constructed from his own ego (that his wife ran screaming from, worth noting), and in the end, it was that that was his downfall. He was torn apart by the manifestation of his own persona he'd constructed
That's not to mention that the reason he didn't change wasn't that he was incapable of change, just that he never wanted to in the first place. He paid lip service to the idea, even going to therapy, but he was so resistant to the idea of actually changing the whole time. The backrooms didn't change him, either. Not at his core. They just enabled him to get what he always wanted: consequence free irresponsibility, and an environment he was able to dominate
I think it did a really good job with the narrative of like, "this guy truly believes the warped version of the truth he tells himself, and believes himself to be the good guy regardless of what horrible things he does". In the end, Clark was his own bullshit's best customer, and it was for that reason he ended up dead

"They have no feelings. they just. Exist." Thats.. horrifying knowing Clark had this sense of wanting control over everything. He can eat them, stab them, do what he wanted. It goes back to the divorce, no duh, about the fact that his wife kicked him out and he had no control over that aspect of his life anymore. He wanted control. He wanted to be in control. And the fact that he's just... manhandling and controlling those still lifes, the fact that he can do whatever, it has so many chilling implications. No wonder he stayed there. No wonder he didnt want to change. Everything was perfect in those yellow walls. for a time at least.
im a big fan of the idea that the backrooms are an allegory for what dissociation does to your brain. the backrooms represents what happens to your brain when you go through repeated trauma and how it will remember stuff, but not quite exactly how you want it to. a place that is supposed to feel like home and tries to remember it being cozy and comforting but it can’t. all it can remember clearly is the “feelings” you felt as a person. not even your own identity is completely known in the backrooms. because that’s just how much trauma will mess and distort your brain.

Anyway i love how the movie uses this very abstract out-there horror premise to represent the human tendency to get stuck on something and obsess over it and become trapped in a never-ending cycle and to resist change so hard that you still change anyway but in a way that degrades and warps and destroys you and the fallibility of human memory and how every time you recall something it gets a little less accurate which means the more you obsess over something the further entrenched in it you become the more you choose to live here the worse it gets the less you understand it until your perspective on the objective reality of it is completely destroyed. The backrooms are a brain the whole thing is a brain. The horror is the human brain. CAN ANYBODY HEAR MEEEEE
