I am so bad at creating fun stuffā¦
Rhaegar couldn't have known House Stark would be pissed off by his running off with their betrothed daughter! (Even though Brandon had to be physically stopped from attacking Rhaegar at Harrenhal for Crowning Lyanna, thus compromising her reputation.)
Rhaegar couldn't have known it would be hurtful to both Elia's feelings as his wife and position as his consort to crown another woman his queen of love and beauty! (Even though we have the famous tale of how valiant prince Aemon had to save poor Queen Naerys Targaryen from the exact same public insult by her husband who was literally called "the unworthy".)
Rhaegar couldn't have known House Baratheon would not be pleased with his crowning of their future Lady and then running off with her! (Even though Lord Lyonel Baratheon had already raised a rebellion against House Targaryen over a broken betrothal by a Targaryen crown prince, and so poor princess Rhaelle had to be bartered to make peace, which is the whole reason why Robert has a Targaryen blood claim to the IT.)
Rhaegar couldn't have known his insane father, literally called the Mad King, wouldn't react well to the political disaster Rhaegar had created and then dumped on him to deal with! (Even though there was already gossip all over the seven kingdoms that Aerys distrusted Rhaegar so much that he was considering disinheriting him and declaring Viserys his heir.)
Rhaegar couldn't have known that Elia and their kids would be unsafe in the Red Keep without a single Kingsguard to protect them! (Even without the threat of the rebels and Tywin's treachery, Aerys was going to raze the whole city to the ground with wildfire, including Elia and Aegon and Rhaenys.)
Rhaegar couldn't have known Jaime wouldn't protect Elia and the kids! (Jaime was literally a child hostage himself, Aerys always kept him close for that very reason, and Rhaegar didn't even once ask Jaime, who was the only Kingsguard left in the city due to Rhaegar's own actions, to protect his wife and kids. Jaime feels bad for Elia and her kids' demise because this is another way he thinks he failed as a Kingsguard.)
Rhaegar couldn't have known creating a political crisis so big that it brought down his family's dynasty, would worsen and endanger not only his wife's and kids' life, but his mother's as well! It's Aerys' fault for what Rhaella suffered! (Rhaegar knew his father was a madman who liked to r*pe his poor wife after burning people alive. He absolutely could have showed a smidge of consideration to the poor woman who was forced to birth him at age of thirteen, and whose life had been just one trauma after another ever since. Rhaegar absolutely could have. If he wanted to. He clearly didn't want to, for he seems not to have spared Rhaella's suffering a single thought, else he would prioritize getting rid of his evil father over getting into Lyanna's pants.)
Rhaegar couldn't have known that House Martell would see his abandonment of their only princess as a grave dishonor! (I wasn't aware that House Martell had no personal sense of honor or self preservation. In fact, didn't we read that Doran was pissed off and reluctant to send aid because of Elia's horrible treatment by House Targaryen?)
Rhaegar couldn't have known it's diabolical to take your mistress to honeymoon in your wife's homeland, while the wife and kids are being held hostage by insane grandpa! (Then why was Rhaegar hiding in a super secret love shack in Dorne, instead of openly parading Lyanna around?)
Rhaegar couldn't have known Rhaenys would look to him for protection in her last moments alive! (This one I completely agree with, he was barely there for the three years that poor child got to live, Rhaenys most likely only knew about him from what her mother told her.)
There is a whole lot more stuff that Rhaegar's own stans say he couldn't have ever known or saw coming.
If I tried to list them all, I'd be here all day.
I'll just end with this -
I get it Rhaegar stans. Your favorite was a total idiot, who never knew anything. Ever.
Truly, he most certainly is Jon You Know Nothing Snow's biological father.

A recent conversation in a discord group reminded me of something important. If you're on the younger side (under 25 or 30) and you haven't seen all the incredible, dark and disturbing fantasy films that came out in the 1980s and late 1970s, then I would strongly encourage you to do so. There was something so dark about that genre during that time that I absolutely adore and that isn't really around in modern films for children and young adults (once they learned that it traumatized a whole generation of us).
My faves in case you need any recommendations. (Some of these are really not appropriate for children, so keep that in mind lol).
The Dark Crystal - 1982 - the Skeksis will give you nightmares. I am honestly very proud of the remake for being just as disturbing if not more so than the original.
Watership Down - 1978- NOT FOR CHILDREN - Jesus Christ why did so many of our parents show us this film at a formative age? It's all about trauma and death and displacement and there's literal blood and murder. Not a G Rated Film. Still, it's very good. Loads better than that CGI remake from a decade ago.
The Secret Of NIMH - 1982 - Incredible movie. Minor disturbing elements. Probably my favorite on the list. It's just a great adventure story with real world issues (animal experimentation, mental health problems, disabilities) and there's even a lovely romance. Highly recommend.
Legend - 1985- This film is just straight up disturbing. Yes, there's a lot of beautiful shots of unicorns and sexy, 20-something year old (insane Scientology wack job) Tom Cruise and gorgeous Mia Sara, but there's also torture, madness and literally the Devil (Tim Curry is the entire reason you should watch this film)
Labyrinth - 1986 - I only really have two words. David. Bowie. My 10 year old self found out about a lot of burgeoning kinks while watching that man prance around in eyeliner and a codpiece. It's a wonderful adventure as well - if you ignore the blatant romantic and sexual tension between Bowie and an underage Jennifer Connelly (none of us could)
The NeverEnding Story - 1984 - Lots of disturbing imagery in this one! The Nothing was fucking terrifying, and the creatures in this world seemed uniformly creepy, but still incredibly well done. Love the adventure of it.
The Princess Bride - 1987 - Not technically a kids film maybe? Lots of adult themes and adult jokes, but safe for kids imo. I adored it and still do. Incredible performances by Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin. R.O.U.S, Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya! (need I say more?)
The Last Unicorn - 1982 - A beautiful film with stunning representations of innocence, good and evil. Just gorgeous really. I should rewatch it as it's been 20 years or so.

no no sansa would not be a clichĆ© popular girl in school. she wouldnāt be like. the bottom of the social hierarchy i think sheād be loved by a lot of people. however. she has one best friend (jeyne) and they are nerding out over their white boy of the month and she is her english teacherās special little princess the one who annoys everyone else by always raising her hand and she is a choir kid she is section lead of the soprano 1s always scheduling practices on weeknights that interfere with everyoneās free time but she does not care this is important. and she plays the tragic maiden in her schoolās shakespeare plays and finds it so utterly romantic and she is a bookworm she starts with trashy middle-grade romance novels and then she discovers jane austen and the chronicles of narnia. she goes through a major horse girl phase at the same time as arya is going through a warrior cats phase and they both have insanely fleshed-out my little pony + warrior cats ocs. she isnāt going to games and admiring the jocks she is on tumblr getting sold to one direction and daydreaming about boys (and girls) who open doors for her and braid her hair and will get rid of the spiders in her house she is on ao3 reading and writing like alexander hamilton she is bothering ned for the newest merch for her favorite boy band and then going to get a strawberry aƧaĆ refresher with jeyne
at the end of the day i think the reason weāre all so obsessed w jon snow in the books is the inherent comedy of the Chosen One being sent to magical boarding school and just hating every minute of it. heās not realizing his full magical girl potential heās just exhausted. mans is TIRED. thereās a literal giant camping out in his front yard and heās stressing over salt beef. there is an uber hot magical witch actively trying to seduce him and heās just likeĀ āomg ygritte had red hair⦠im going to kmsā. he is actively becoming a wolf. like straight up animorphing into his pet dog. and he doesnāt give a shit heās likeĀ āhm thatās weirdā and then he gets distracted smelling satinsā hair again. easily the most character of all time. god.
Jon/Val is one of those ships where GRRM is basically standing in the background with a foghorn screaming āDO YOU SEE THIS OR ARE YOU ALL BLINDā, and the fandom still somehow goes āhuh, must be nothing.ā
Jonās POV when it comes to Val is unhinged by his standards. This is the same guy who overthinks eye contact, panics over Ygritte laughing at him, and needs Arya-level coaching to talk to girls, and suddenly with Val heās out here doing lingering physical descriptions, moonlit proximity, casual flirting, and internal fantasy sequences about having her babies. Sir???
āI would need to steal her if I wanted her love, but she might give me children. I might someday hold a son of my own blood in my arms. A son was something Jon Snow had never dared dream of, since he decided to live his life on the Wall. I could name him Robb [ā¦] He wanted it, Jon knew then. He wanted it as much as he had ever wanted anything. I have always wanted it, he thought, guiltily. May the gods forgive meā
His descriptions of Val are extra in a way he is not with most women. He notices her beauty repeatedly, her confidence, her presence, the way she moves, and the way she looks at him. This isnāt āsheās pretty.ā This is attention.
āVal looked at him with pale grey eyes⦠She was as fair as he'd remembered, slender, full-breasted, graceful even at rest, with high sharp cheekbones and a thick braid of honey-colored hair that fell to her waist.āāASOS - Jon X
āVal did not need to smile; she would have turned men's heads in any court in the wide world.āāJon III, ADWD
The flirting is mutual and intentional.
People love to pretend this is one-sided. Itās not. Val teases him, challenges him, ignores his authority in a way thatās playful rather than dismissive, daring Jon to come up to her bed sometime.
āVal patted the long bone knife on her hip. "Lord Crow is welcome to steal into my bed any night he dares. Once he's been gelded, keeping those vows will come much easier for him."
She literally kisses him on the cheek, and stands close enough that their breath mingles in the cold. That frost-from-their-breaths line is not accidental. GRRM does not write like that unless he wants you to notice the intimacy. Thatās romance-coded as hell.
āThe light of the half-moon turned Valās honey-blond hair a pale silver and left her cheeks as white as snow. She took a deep breath. "The air tastes sweet.ā "My tongue is too numb to tell. All I can taste is cold.ā [ā¦] Val kissed him lightly on the cheek. āYou have my thanks, Lord Snow. For the half-blind horse, the salt cod, the free air. For hope.ā Their breath mingled, a white mist in the air.ā
And Jon isnāt flustered in the usual āoh gods a woman spoke to meā way. He engages. He banters back. He instigates sometimes. Who is this man and what did he do with Jon Snow.
The tower scream thing is INSANE actually. This moment is so telling and people ignore it. Jon hears a scream from the tower and immediately thinks it might be Val. Not Stannisās people, not a guard, not a prisoner, not some political disaster. His first instinct is that Val is in danger. Thatās emotional priority. Thatās attachment. And the fact that it turns out to be a man screaming doesnāt erase the instinct.
Then he heard the shouting ⦠and a roar so loud it seemed to shake the Wall. "That come from Hardin's Tower, m'lord," Horse reported. He might have said more, but the scream cut him off.
Val, was Jon's first thought. But that was no woman's scream. That is a man in mortal agony. He broke into a run. Horse and Rory raced after him. "Is it wights?" asked Rory. Jon wondered. Could his corpses have escaped their chainsāāA Dance with Dragons - Jon XIII
Stannisās offer worked. Thatās the point. Yes, Jon turns Stannis down. No, that does not mean Val didnāt matter. Jon straight-up thinks he might have had her, imagines her as his wife, imagines her bearing his children, and feels genuine temptation. This is not casual. This is Jon envisioning a future.
āLonely and lovely and lethal, Jon Snow reflected, and I might have had her. Her, and Winterfell, and my lord father's name. Instead he had chosen a black cloak and a wall of ice. Instead he had chosen honor. A bastard's sort of honor.ā
And the tragedy is that he doesnāt reject Val. He rejects himself. He doesnāt think heās allowed happiness, legitimacy, or desire. Thatās the same old Jon wound talking.
Free Folk marriage shenanigans. The Free Folk marriage angle is the cherry on top. There is a very real possibility that Jon āstoleā Val, again accidentally, as is his brand, according to Free Folk custom, and she does not object. At all. If anything, she seems amused.
GRRM loves this kind of cultural irony. Jon accidentally fulfilling Wildling traditions while thinking heās doing nothing is extremely on brand. Ghostās approval is NOT meaningless. Ghost liking Val immediately is not random. Jon literally thinks Val and Ghost look like they belong together. Not āthey look nice.ā Not āthey suit each other.ā Belong.
āThen Ghost emerged from between two trees, with Val beside him. They look as though they belong together⦠but her eyes were blue, her long braid the color of dark honey, her cheeks flushed red from the cold. It had been a long while since Jon Snow had seen a sight so lovely.ā
Thatās soulmate language. Thatās āthis fits in my life in a way that feels natural and right.ā GRRM uses animals as emotional truth detectors. Ghost accepting Val is a giant narrative thumbs-up.
Why the fandom sleeps on it.
Honestly? Val isnāt in the show. Sheās not loud about her desire. The ship isnāt tragic in an obvious way. It doesnāt come with a flashy love story or a sex scene. But on the page, Jon/Val is quiet, mutual, organic, and deeply thematically resonant: Watcher on the Wall and woman beyond the Wall, duty versus desire, belonging versus exile, ice and fire without incest or prophecy nonsense.
Final verdict. Jon/Val isnāt a crack ship. Itās not wishful thinking. Itās not fandom projection. Itās GRRM planting a slow-burn, moonlit, frost-breathing, cheek-kissing, baby-imagining romance and trusting the reader to catch it.
at the end of the day i think the reason weāre all so obsessed w jon snow in the books is the inherent comedy of the Chosen One being sent to magical boarding school and just hating every minute of it. heās not realizing his full magical girl potential heās just exhausted. mans is TIRED. thereās a literal giant camping out in his front yard and heās stressing over salt beef. there is an uber hot magical witch actively trying to seduce him and heās just likeĀ āomg ygritte had red hair⦠im going to kmsā. he is actively becoming a wolf. like straight up animorphing into his pet dog. and he doesnāt give a shit heās likeĀ āhm thatās weirdā and then he gets distracted smelling satinsā hair again. easily the most character of all time. god.
