The music was blaring from the living room and there were swathes of people all over the house. Some of them were already at the point of drinking where they were dancing, most of them were stood around gossiping about mindless nonsense. You had found a cosy corner in the kitchen, curled up on one of the chairs and trying to avoid the entire thing.
It wasn't that you hadn't wanted to come. You'd actually been looking forward to seeing everyone, having not been out for a while. It had been lovely catching up with Robin and Nancy. Plus, the main reason you had come along, a chance to spend time with your favourite person in the world.
Steve was making the rounds like it was second nature to him, catching up with people that he knew from high school. Some of them he avoided, not really bothering with the popular crowd anymore, but others he genuinely wanted to talk to. You could see him now from your comfy pew, standing in the hallway and shaking hands with one of the guys who was bending his ear off. His high school reputation still stood in him in good stead, but you knew better than anyone that wasn't who he was anymore. He was good, and kind and you loved him for it.
He met your gaze halfway through his conversation and a smile crept across his face when he saw you. Giving the guy a generous pat on the back, he said his goodbyes and wandered into the kitchen, making his way over to you.
"Hey, sweetheart." He said as he reached you, pressing a kiss to your forehead. "I've been looking for you, how long you been in here?"
"Not long." You told him. "I'm sorry, it was just the loud music and all the people, it got a bit too much."
"Hey, no need to apologise." He told you, keeping a comforting hand on your shoulder. "You want to head out? Feels like the party's winding down anyway."
"No, honestly it's fine." You told him. "You're still catching up with people. I'm alright in here."
Steve shook his head. "Baby, I won't be able to enjoy myself if I know you're sitting in here alone. You don't really want to stay, do you?"
That was what you loved the most about Steve, he knew your tells like the back of his hand. It was difficult for you not to feel guilty in this moment though. "Are you angry? I know how much you wanted to come to this party?"
"Of course I'm not angry, sweet thing. I don't care that much about this party, none of these people even really know me. I'd much rather hang out with you." He kissed the top of your head, making you laugh. "Come on, I have pizza and a movie back at mine. That sounds way more fun to me."
"That does sound nice." You couldn't help but grin. "You truly are the best boyfriend I could ask for."
"Come on." He pulled you up from your seat. "If we leave now, we can be back at mine in the next twenty minutes."
You said your goodbyes to the gang, promising another catch-up soon, and Steve kept a hand on your back as you made your way out, almost like an anchor for you. Steve was your safe place to land, he always had been. As soon as you were outside in the cool evening air, he put an arm around you as you walked towards his car. He made a point of opening your door for you, and before you climbed in, you leaned in and kissed him.
"How did I get so lucky?"
"Are you kidding? I'm definitely the lucky one." He grinned.
