On the outside of a letter sent by ship to the Blessed Lands of the West in S.A. 2510, in a considerable packet, accompanying a passenger and her guards:

Elrond Peredhel, Viceroy and Governor of Eriador, addresses His Sovereignty High King of the Noldor Gil-galad Ereinion;

On the inside of that same letter:

Beloved,

I write in a very great hope that you are now returned to the world in the West to receive and read this letter. But, as you are no doubt aware by the manner of its delivery, the news I must bear you is not fortunate. Allow me to delay one moment to express fervent wishes that you are well, and have found those already sailed or lost to our wars with Sauron awaiting you; and also that Aman has held for you both some measure of happiness in the new life I pray you are granted, and those answers you – we – sought.

I write this letter to accompany our Celebrían, who is not well. She was captured by orcs – we think only orcs, although in truth I do not know – traveling the Misty Mountains, and freed some time later. She recovered at first in strength of body, but her mind I could not heal. She has deteriorated again in body since, and I know that she must go over the sea or be lost here, and perhaps forever. I have written so that you may receive the news of our sorrow from me and not from the guards of my household if she is unable to explain, for in these past weeks, often she has been impossible to reach with words. I hope this measure will be unnecessary.

Beloved, there is another letter with all I wish to say, and tidings from the years past. For now – care for Celebrían, and when she is well, let her care for you. I know that if you are returned, it is your household she would most wish to go to, and I have so directed her guards in the case that, as seems likely, she cannot.

A thousand kisses on your hands and mouth, for each day we have been parted, and each day further.
