The countdown was to begin any moment now, and his heart was already racing before his body was. All he needed was the boom of the starter pistol. Upon his back, his jocky was tensed and ready, but calm. She was a Miqo'te, and wore lightweight and practical clothing, adding as little extra heft as possible to give him a better chance.
The shot rang out, and Cerulean Burst dashed forward with all his might. He pulled out ahead easily, and now it was up to him to keep that lead. His jockey gripped his body with her strong legs to hold on. Not as strong as his, of course, but these humans were surprisingly muscular for their smaller builds. Dust and sand flew up from his talons every time he took another gigantic, leaping step, ever forcing his body further and faster, closer and closer to the finish line. Like a bolt of levin, he zipped to and fro across the track, hugging the turns as best he could, while also trying physically block any that would usurp his place.
But he was still young. Though he was from a long line of racing chocobos with an impressive pedigree, he was but the newest in the family line, and had yet to truly find his footing.
He had not yet built up his endurance, and his stamina was waning fast. He had pushed too hard, and was starting to lose speed and breath. The jockey tugged the reins in a way to signal for him to slow down, but he was already spent. Bird after bird rushed past him, making for the finish line while he lagged behind them. Still, he raced with every last bit of energy within him, until finally he crossed the checkered line, and collapsed into a heap on the ground. His jockey easily slid off his back, and her tiny hands tenderly stroked the sides of his head.
"Woah there, big boy, take it easy, you made it."
Cerulean Burst let out a tired, hopeful squawk, his throat dry, making his voice scratchy.
"I'm so proud of you buddy, you came in fifth!"
Fifth? That was nothing to brag about, he thought. His mother was a champion that regularly placed in the top three in nearly all her races towards the end of her career.
"I'm gonna make you a special treat today, okay? Fresh, crunchy gourds. Your favorite!"
As he felt his jockey press her forehead against his beak, his still racing heart swelled up, and he felt as if he had won first prize.

this year for fanfest i embroidered the titania shadowbox! (yes the whole thing)
process and wip pics under the cut!
basic outline/pattern was drawn in procreate based off of ref pics in the game, and i did a rough color map to plan which sections were what color and where the transitions would be. i printed the outline onto water soluble stabilizer for a guide when embroidering. pieces were cut out and i did a simple running stitch to tack them onto the cloth. everything managed to fit in 3 8β hoops with some amount of tetrising.
interlude: shaping so much wire to match the wing outlines so they can somewhat stand freely
outline of the different sections was done with backstitch in the respective color and the wire was couched down (black thread in the middle is to mark the color transitions bc it was a little hard to see)
stabilizer was then washed away since i already had the outline down and i didnβt want to embroider through the paper. also no idea if i was doing it wrong or my stabilizer was old, but it didnβt wash away fully under the stitches so i had to spend a few hours removing shreds of paper with a pin and tweezers. fun times!
once everything is dry, whip stitch to cover the wire, and long and short stitch for everything else, 1 strand for the colors and 2 for the black. rinse and repeat for the rest of the wings
main body done, now cut everything out! wow thatβs a lot of pieces..
+ the back, just for fun (the wire tails were kept long to put everything together.. weβll come back to that)
the staff is made from felt. flower petals were made similar to the wings, with a wire slip outline so they could be shaped and curled like petals. buttonhole stitch this time to cover the wire, and whipped backstitch for the petal center. knots/thread tails at the petal base since they would be mostly covered. for the stem(?) part, itβs a triangular piece if felt rolled into a log, the free edge whip stitched in the back to hide the seam. the petals were attached to the inside at the top so when you roll it the wires are all hidden. i also some wire along the side for added sturdiness. sorry i donβt have a lot of pics of this i was too annoyed while making it lol
construction time! fabric over sturdy cardboard would be the background showing in the frame (no glass), and i punched a small hole in the cardboard somewhere around the middle to feed the wires through. the general plan: the center wing piece would form a hoop to slide the staff in, and all of the other wing wires would wrap around the hoop. the wire that made up the hoop would then feed through the hole in the cardboard and get sandwiched between the cardboard and the back of the frame so the whole thing can be supported. the result: this abominationΒ
but! everything ended up fitting and the staff is removable so success! some finishing touches:
green glass bead at the center of the staff petals, held in place by wire
smaller beads at the center of the wing piece to mimic the in game model
wire inside a piece green yarn to wrap around the staff

It would mean a lot to me this year's Pride, to see acknowledgement and celebration for queers of color of every stripe. Often it feels like BIPOC are an afterthought in Pride celebrations, not only left unacknowledged, but further marginalized by the intersection of their identities. And yet the weight of queer history roars with the resistance of people like Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera who did not stop fighting for liberation until they passed. The uprising at Stonewall itself is a culmination of years of queer activism.
When it comes to conversations about queer suppression, especially as shown by the attitude inspiring this post, we often see takes that certain people inherently don't "understand" gay coding or any number of nods to queer identity, simply due to the circumstances of our birth. I'd like to bring attention to the fact that many people in the world are still unable to openly call themselves queer of any kind of identity, without being severely punished by their own governments. At the same time, BIPOC in the USA especially Black and Indigenous people, regardless of their queer status, are policed and killed every day for the most frivolous reasons; and queerness amplifies the danger they face on the daily, especially if they are perceived as being gender-nonconforming. I'd like us all to remember what we think of as 'normal' now, like posting about queerness and being queer online, is an incredible, incredible privilege that people lived, fought, and died for. Our elders died dreaming that we, the future generations, have a chance to breathe and love together.
Stereotyping a whole kind of people, or blanketing a nation's attitude onto the people who live there, feels extremely antithetical to the history of the term 'queer' as a community and as a movement of liberation. Personally speaking, I was practically raised by a butch while we were both navigating the complexities and danger of being queer, in a country whose textbooks promote civilians to punish homosexuality by stoning gays or putting lesbians into house arrest, whose laws criminalize private citizens' sex lives. I saw firsthand the discrimination she could not shake for the entirety of her work, how she had to bring her own friends as advocates for her because her coworkers and administration disliked her, the way our organization suffered due to the perception of her as a corrupting influence on the band kids she trained. She shepherded us through the most successful years of marching band our school had ever seen, and her reward was to be kicked out of the school the moment my class graduated. Luckily, no worse outcome happened that I know of, but we all saw it happen. She had no partner that I knew of, and she never spoke of her orientation publicly, but that she was so gender-nonconforming as a butch was enough to mark her for life.
Instead of performing that violence of erasure, let's uplift and truly see each other, and continue the hard work of our forebears where we can. We must, we must strive to give the next generation (and our peers right now) a better life.
The results have been pretty heavily in the Yes! category, so stay tuned for the actual listing! I'm thinking of doing 10 slots to see how these go, since they will take a bit longer due to being custom and made-to-order.
