caught in the storm | samuel & diya
By the time he had her set up in the car, her reckless sobs had begun to calm down, at least a little. She wrapped her arms around herself, her chin tucked into her chest, head against the window. She looked so small. So fragile. Diya shook her head at the suggestion of calling. If it were up to her, she wouldnât go back at all. Her sisters would kill her for showing her face. Her brothers would look at her with disdain. Her mother⌠she didnât want to think about her motherâs reaction to her suddenly reappearing into their lives.Â
âDonât,â she murmured, staring at one of the lampposts. It wasnât the same as staring into the sun. It didnât make her eyes burn. âThey hate me.â Diya wet her lips, and in that moment, it started up again. All the crying. Sheâd done this to them. All of the pain her family had ever experienced was brought to them through her. âEveryone hates me⌠You. Rafael. Me! Padma. Tarak. My own mother cursed the day I was born, right over the phone.â She stomped her foot, deciding at the last minute not to kick his dashboard. âWhy does this keep happening to me? I never did anything to deserve this!â
Samuel wanted to do more. To help her feel better. But he wasnât sure he knew how to anymore. He wanted to wrap his arms around her, to hold her. Kiss her. Assure her that Ravi was going to be okay. But he just drove instead, listened to her cry. He occasionally glanced over at her, sighing sadly. He hated seeing her like this. âNo one hates you, Diya. Itâs the opposite.â He spoke softly, merging onto the interstate. He tried to find the right words to say, but it was hard. He didnât want to overstep any boundaries.
âRafael doesnât hate you, by the way. Iâll talk to him, but I know he doesnât. He just wants me to be happy. And your family? They donât hate you. They miss you. Theyâll be so happy to see you, Diya.â He smiled a little. He knew that theyâd be happy to see her, even if her relationship with her mother was estranged. âI know you donât deserve it...â he wanted to call her sweetheart. Love. Darling. But he refrained. âLife is just awful sometimes. But Ravi? Heâs gonna be taken care of. I talked to Rafael before coming. Weâll take care of all the hospital bills. You and your family donât have to worry about anything.âÂ
