« I crave that feeling you get just before you go to sleep, when everything gives in. The fight ends. The fight of our thinking lives. […] Rest awaits. The relentless ticking clock of your conscious awareness prepares to be smothered, your limbs prepare to go slack, the things that hurt will stop hurting, the whole frenetic circus of it all is about to collapse. There’s nothing for you to do, or work out. »
— Samantha Harvey, The Shapeless Unease
“And yet to wine, to opium even, I prefer the elixir of your lips on which love flaunts itself.”
— Charles Baudelaire, Les Fleurs du Mal
“I feel the distance between myself and others. I guard that distance.”
— Henry Miller, from a letter to Anaïs Nin, featured in A Literate Passion: Letters of Anaïs Nin & Henry Miller, 1932-1953

“Je suis comme un poisson qui a été rejeté sur le sable. J'attends que l'écriture revienne me chercher : alors je renais pour bientôt remourir. Et puis, soudain, il y a un moment où j'ai comme la révélation de tout, où une feuille de tilleul peut illuminer la journée entière.”
— Christian Bobin, La lumière du monde

Wandering Thought # 405
One of the paradoxes of the human soul: a person can be very loving and empathetic, yet ideologically supporting a backward and tyrannical regime or rule, can even rejoice in the suffering of others. This poses no internal contradiction for the said person, for ideology acts as prism through which reality is reflected. In that person's mind, if the regime or ideology are cruel towards a set of persons, his empathy and set of morals do not register as broken, for the ideology does not allow him to perceive reality as such, and accept the suffering persons as human beings. In his internal world they register as deserving objects, not suffering subjects.
So he goes on, he waters his plants, pets his cat, and supports a people's extermination.
Wandering Thought # 402
In the end, it is not we who hold on to hope, but hope that holds us and will not let us go. Keep pushing forward—past your middle age; you are closer to the heart of life than when you were in your childhood.

Our souls touching, silent as dawn... music, a hidden wave frothing to and fro between our souls
“In the soul of a Christian, the presence of the pagan virtue of patriotism acts as a dissolvent. We received it from the hands of Rome without giving it baptism. It is strange to reflect that the barbarians, or those who were so named, were baptized almost without any difficulty at the time of the invasions; but the heritage of ancient Rome never was, no doubt because it was impossible for it to be, and that in spite of the fact that the Roman Empire turned Christianity into a State religion.”

“…There is the heat of Love, the pulsing rush of Longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible—magic to make the sanest man go mad.”
- Homer, The Iliad
“Je peux vous assurer qu'un pétale de rose est assez solide pour empêcher quelqu'un de rouler au néant.”
