Wonderfully successful day at the Health And Fitness Expo at ESPN! The check-in process was an absolute breeze and we were exploring the vendors booths after less than half an hour. There were tons of awesome vendors, but I ended up getting merch from RunDisney. I decided on a Han and Chewie shirt (surprise, surprise) and a 12 parsecs car magnet. Also, note that many of the vendors are selling things that will be beneficial to serious runners. I wouldn’t consider myself seriously training for anything at the moment, so I was mainly interested in the couple booths that were selling fun Disney-themed running clothes. We’re just turning in for the night after a fun evening at Disney Springs, ready for a day of Star Wars tomorrow!
Alright friends, it's The Dark Side Half Marathon Weekend! I'll be out at the expo today, running the 5K tomorrow, and then spending a full day in the parks afterwards.

Note: This is an older draft, written shortly after the debut of Once Upon a Time. I waited to post this until I was able to see it a second time, the reasoning behind this explained in the post. However, my thoughts didn’t change much and I still wanted to share them, especially as a kick off to more original content!
I had the chance to see Once Upon A Time, the new castle show at Magic Kingdom and I wanted to share my first impressions/review of the show! Be aware there are spoilers under the cut if you’re waiting to see the show in person. If not, proceed under the “Keep Reading”:
My thoughts on Once Upon A Time?...I have a lot of them. Unfortunately, I didn’t love this show as much as I’d hoped and in my mind, it couldn’t compare to Celebrate the Magic. Granted, Celebrate is a very special show to me, and I was hoping that after a second viewing of OUAT that I’d enjoy it a bit more. I will say that I enjoyed watching it a little bit more the second time after knowing what to expect, but overall I wouldn’t call it a sufficient replacement.
The premise of the show, for those who haven’t seen it and don’t mind having it spoiled, is that Mrs. Potts is telling Chip bedtime stories, focusing on Cinderella, Peter Pan, Frozen, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, and of course, Beauty and the Beast.
One thing I did really like about this show is that the projections are so crisp and clear - definitely a far cry from the projections during The Magic, The Memories, and You; and even a bit better than those used in Celebrate. The visuals are absolutely stunning, something that did manage to draw me. The show also uses more pyrotechnics than any other castle show. Overall, Once Upon A Time is executed better than any of its predecessors, something I must give the show credit for.
Despite the beautiful execution of this show, it never grabbed me the way Celebrate the Magic did. I can acknowledge there’s a bit of bias there, as I did spend one entire College Program watching Celebrate every night, but I loved this show even before becoming a CM. The format of the new show just didn’t work for me. One thing I loved about Celebrate was that there were few, if any, segments devoted to a single film. It was great to see the variety of movies represented, as opposed to a few extremely popular films. OUAT focuses so much attention on so few films, it actually feels a lot like Mickey’s Philharmagic, just presented through a different medium. I don’t think this is necessarily a good thing. Now, I do love Philharmagic; I think I just hoped for a little more from a nighttime show.
Don’t get me wrong, this show isn’t terrible or anything and there were definitely moments that I enjoyed. The Peter Pan segment was incredible - flying over Neverland gave me chills! I also quite liked the Beauty and the Beast segment, even though it was a little longer than necessary. I know the show existed in one of the international parks for a while prior to coming over to Disney World, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the show debuted here months prior to the release of the live action Beauty and the Beast film. Still, seeing the famous ballroom scene on the castle is beautiful!
Finally, I think my main problem with the show is that Celebrate the Magic made me feel so many emotions, especially because they highlighted Walt, Mickey, and the “it was all started by a mouse”. OUAT made me crack a smile and I’ll admit, I joined the Main Street wide singalong of “First Time in Forever” and “Let It Go”, but at the end of the day, I didn’t feel much in regards to this show and I’m sure taking out the portions of Walt, Mickey, and the Disney Heritage had a big hand in that.
Overall, not a terrible replacement for Celebrate the Magic. I’m sure that most people will find this show perfectly entertaining. However, it didn’t really measure up to my expectations and I have to say, I do wish they would have just left Celebrate alone and I’ve talked to others who feel the same way. That said, I do highly recommend checking it out for yourself at least once and forming your own opinion!

I’m going to make an attempt to get this blog going again! Not so much of a DCP blog anymore (though I’ll gladly talk DCP if you want to!), but more about Disney news, reviewing new Disney experiences, etc., now that I’m living in Orlando the to foreseeable future.
I’m hoping that within the next couple of days I can start the revamping process. I’ve been wanting to do something with a Disney dedicated blog for a while, and now seems to finally be the time!

“For years I’ve debated whether to be a cast member at Disneyland or not. Whenever I see stuff on Facebook from friends it always looked so much fun, not to mention being able to go for free whenever. But I’ve also heard from CM friends just how stressful and demanding it is, plus I heard that they aren’t treated very well. I’ve thought about it, but I feel like the cons outweigh the pros for me, and I would rather stay a guest.”
It really depends on what kind of person you are, I would say. Being a Cast Member is incredibly hard work – you listen to the same music and shows, you answer the exact same questions, and you get angry, stressed out, unpleasant, or not-all-there-mentally guests day after day. You might get passed over for promotions, moving to full-time, or even just the scheduled hours you want until you build up enough seniority. You will have to work holidays, more often than not, and work six-day weeks when it’s very busy. In nearly all of the positions you have to smile 99% of your day. You will be made to stand for very long periods of time, sometimes in intense heat or in the rain in less than comfortable clothes. You need to be able to project and/or scream in most of the positions too, but you will have to do it without sounding confrontational or mean if you want to avoid guest complaints. You will be going backstage and will see the magic deconstructed before your eyes, and yet will have to still see that magic while on the job.
But despite all this, for many people, like me, it’s worth it. I get to make people happy with my love of performing and Disney every single day, and I couldn’t feel more fulfilled. But I know full well that being a Cast Member isn’t for everybody.
