The Christmas Markets are open in Ferrara, a quick 30 minute train ride away from Bologna. The day was sunny so great for a stroll awaiting sunset and the lights. Some of the porticoes that have been recognized on the Unesco World Heritage list are not as elaborate as others I have posted but are functional. These found in the University are low with wooden beams. The 13th century Torre della Pallata in Brescia. The tower was part of the medieval walls of the city. The San Benedictine Monastery of San Salvatore is home to the City Museum of Brescia and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. These floors decorated with mosaics are part of the excavation of 2 Roman town homes from the 1st - 3rd century AD. You walk amongst the many rooms on elevated walkways. I was fascinated by these and the level of preservation. Brescia deserves a few days of exploration. Seat of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture and Crafts, Palazzo della Mercanzia has been regulating Bologna's commercial and trading activities since the late 14th century. At the centre of the façade there is a small marble balcony surmounted by an elegant steeple. Local tradition dictates that the sentences of the merchant's court would be read upon the sounding of the "Lucardina" bell.
