i just really need people to stop acting like sam’s ability to not be as wrapped up in john only had to do with some sort of magical abilities or level of health or a lower level of trauma while ignoring that john winchester did not show love for him the way he showed it to dean, as poorly as he showed it to dean

i understand why dean was wrapped up in john and why he was and is wrapped up in sam

but it wasn’t like that for sam, he was not treated like part of a family, he was treated like the lowest ranking officer except until he was 12 he had no way to contribute or show his worth

I think that intermittent rewards are a thing people don’t get? Sam saw through John because John was consistently awful to him, while Dean got the extra cookie once in a while and so was much more effectively Stockholmed in a lot of ways. (This is a pattern Dean has started repeating more and more with Sam, with the occasional backhanded compliment rolled into the abuse.) John did a major number on them both, no doubt, just using some different tactics.
