A lot of British responses to Brexit, particularly around suddenly being subjected to lengthy customs waits during travel in and out of Europe, come down to a people having fallen for their own lie, that certain ways of life exist because that’s just how things are in the “civilized world” rather than being maintained and propped up through the clear demarcation and exclusion of the other, the truly foreign. The EU and other political bodies like it are greatly invested in obscuring the maintenance of its realm of peaceful coexistence to the point that it became transparent to the majority of voting Brits, it didn’t even process that this close peaceful coexistence could be lost because it stopped processing that it was built or maintained and didn’t just naturally develop because they, and the rest of Europe, were just more civilized and advanced than the rest of the world
