Sam Dearden: Hurriya (Skateboarding in the Westbank)
The photo series âHurriyaâ, named after the Arabic word for freedom shows the growing skating scene inside the Palestinian City of Ramallah. Working with the charity group Skatepal, Sam went down to the West Bank to shoot pictures of local kids skating around the Palestinian territory.
Charities like SkatePal and Skatistan offer an escape from everyday life, and volunteers come from allover the world to teach children how to skate.
Filmmaker Maen Hammadâs documentary Epicly Palestineâd focuses on the skating scene throughout Palestine via konbini
Some photographs from a recent feature on Konbini of my work Hurriya in the West Bank, Palestine.
Old one of Luke in Ramallah, he specifically asked to be pictured next to the eagle. As far as I am aware he is still currently skateboarding in various places around the world, if you ever meet this dude hook him up.Â
Unused photo from âHurriaâ of Luke doing a front rock on the ramp inside Qalqilya, adding to this work soon at www.samdearden.com

Been going through some old photographs from Palestine in summer 2014 tonight, stoked to be going back later on this year.Â
Peicing some old work together today and found this picture of the moon shot somewhere on the cliffs along the Dorset coast line during my last year of university.Â

This is an old photograph I took just after (I think) one in the afternoon in mid-summer, I saw this woman hiking back up the cliff side, did the usual hello-how-are-you head nod, after passing my self she stood for a considerable amount of time looking out to the sea.Â
Pleased with this find
My friend Sirus bathing in mud on the shore of the Dead Sea facing towards Jordan. This was shot a couple days after we finished up working with SkatePal for the summer and was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, both because of the qualities of the water in the Dead Sea and the amount of Speedos knocking about at the main beach. Looking forward to being back out in Palestine some time next summer with friends.Â

Zak Gilbert, Brighton, 2015Â
Shot from a train window at sunrise, I can still remember vividly how tired we all were to be getting the first train at around 4am into Scotland on a couple hours sleep, and with typically unprepared food and drink stocks for a 10 hour train ride.
