The main reason that polyamory isn’t cheating is because cheating is against the rules. That’s what it means. If your playing soccer and the forward picks up the ball in their hands, they’re cheating because the rules say that the forward can’t touch the ball with their hands. The forward is cheating because they are breaking the rules. However if the goalie touches the ball with their hands they’re not necessarily cheating. They’re the goalie. They’re allowed to touch the ball with their hands sometimes. They aren’t breaking the rules. A goalie still can cheat of course. In soccer the goalie may only handle the ball in their own penalty box. If they’re outside the penalty box and handle the ball they are cheating. The rules are different for the goalie but they aren’t nonexistent.
This is why polyamory or nonmonogamy isn’t cheating. We’re goalies. There are still rules for us but they’re different than the rules that exist for you. Everyone on our team knows how the rules apply to us and what qualifies as breaking the rules is between us and our partners. We’re not cheating because we have different rules.
