author's note: can you believe I lost my draft again I had to redo all this hahahah bye anyway I wrote this in the middle of hell week so ion even know if it's solid or nah so yeah THANKS to all for being so patient I love you all
The following days had been a blur. It had all felt like a filler episode due to how excruciatingly bored you were. Not to mention the exams were over now, so you were back to your old routine.
The hours you spent in the library felt shorter. And you didn't even need to run on coffee anymore. It was like any other day at the University.
Except one thing was a flaw in your routine.
Connor Anderson had long since found out that you were both stupid enough not to realize things sooner. And he had been very quiet about it.
It was as if he hadn't promised to lay off on the competition with you. Like you were back to zero all over again.
Maybe it was your fault. In a way. Due to how you reacted to him that day.
Even North was confused. Just a week ago, you were gushing about how you went home with Connor's jacket. How he had saved you from Jameson's captivity.
She thought it was the start of something new in your daily routine. A new issue to keep up with like she was watching the news.
But you had ultimately told her about everything. That the guy you've been playing video games with online had been Connor Anderson all along.
North was surprised of course. She told you to give it a shot. That you had made a mistake with pushing him away after finding out the truth.
The reaction you've given him wasn't on purpose either way. You were just.. startled.
When Connor had pieced together the clues and asked you the big question, you completely blew it.
Instead of reacting like a normal person and acting surprised, you were disappointed. And Connor almost seemed offended that you were. He was all the more happy that you were one of his closest friends online. But it wasn't the same case for you.
After that confrontation, you've been avoiding him for days.
Connor had tried approaching you after lectures, even tried sitting next to you. But you were maneuvering your way out of his grasp completely.
He was confused. A little hurt. Judging how he always seemed down when you ignore him when he tries to wave at you.
Like you were trying so much to see him as the guy from freshman year and not the one who was making an effort to be your friend.
Today wasn't any different. It had been five days in total since that day in your dorm. Five days since he fixed your doorknob. Five days since he suggested being friends.
North had been MIA the last 24 hours because her department was hosting the annual Founder's Day. She was working on MCing the first day of the celebration and had been working non stop on her script.
It was mentioned that every department should at least prepare a booth for the event during the first two days.
On the third day, everyone would stay until 7PM for the campfire. It was all they could talk about in the hallways.
Surprisingly enough, your professor had tasked you to overlook the booth and manage it's overall sales during the event. Basically supervise the entire thing because no one else would be up for the job except you.
You accepted it anyway. It was a good way to forget all about Connor and his constant whining about ignoring him.
That afternoon though, you've spent the rest of the day getting suggestions from different people. You also found out that Connor was supervising alongside you. Not that it bothered you or anything. The two of you were the most responsible after all.
With a clipboard on your hand, you gathered more and more suggestions until it was narrowed down to a particular theme.
It was settled then.
In your peripheral, you saw Connor talking with one of the girls in your class. If you weren't mistaken, her name was Izzy. She was a year older and had always asked either you or Connor for help during exams.
You saw how she absentmindedly grazed his arm as they talked. And Connor didn't seem to mind at all!
The girl was a senior and was hanging around third years just for the plot?
You turned away and tried focusing on the task at hand, organizing charts and figuring out what's best for the booth.
Some first years were helping out with the booth itself as they gathered around the tree shade. When you approached them and asked the progress, you were able to forget about Connor and Izzy just for a moment.
Just for a few seconds at least.
Founder's Day was in two days and everything seemed to be going pretty well. The seniors did everything they could to help despite worrying about their OJTs. The other years were pretty cooperative and active during meetings too.
But even if you tried to distract yourself from all that work, you still thought of him.
"Hey! Uh, Y/N, right? I'm Archie, one of your seniors. I heard from Professor Cole that you were the one handling all the work for the event." Archie introduced himself as he waved a hand at your way.
You turned and gave the guy a small smile in return.
"Yes, that's right." You replied back.
"Sorry we couldn't do more to help. We're working on this design project for a company that's in another city, so it gets pretty darn busy." He laughed, shoving a hand in the pocket of his hoodie.
Judging the guy in your perspective, he was pretty attractive. All the seniors looked like they belonged in the next Milan fashion show recruitment instead of the university.
The rumours about 4th year Engineering ruining your life was true. But they were wrong about having a glow down.
"No, no, it's fine. I totally get it. Congratulations on landing that deal, by the way. It must've been gruesome having to find clients that prestigious in this economy." You chuckled, shaking your head a bit before ending with a sigh.
"Thank you! When you become a senior yourself, I'd be happy to give you some pointers." Archie smiled softly, though you immediately knew he meant something by that.
You smiled in return, nodding.
"Of course! That'd be great." The wind blew softly in your hair as you spoke, a leaf getting tangled in the strands.
"Let me..." Archie stepped closer as he reached out and gently brushed off the leaf.
He didn't step away when the leaf was gone. He remained in your space as the wind died down.
You looked up, seeing his eyes more clearly now. They were a deep blue. Not piercing, but very deep. Somehow, you thought of a particular person's brown eyes. Eyes that looked like they belonged to a puppy rather than a human being.
What an odd thought.
Archie cleared his throat and finally stepped away, his shoulders slumping a little as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Say, do you mind if you give me a little of your time during the campfire? I wanted to make it up to you as your senior for catching all the work for our department." He proposed, a small pink forming on the apples of his cheeks.
Back then, you would've rejected every form of romance because you were too scared to act on it. Or be distracted from your goal. But that was the past.
You wanted to say yes. You wanted to nod and tell him that it's a date. But all you could think about was Connor.
When you looked past Archie, you could see Connor looking at you already. He was with Izzy. She was talking and he was looking at you. Not her.
This was a fucking nightmare.
"I.. uhm... Sure! I-It sounds.. great! Just look for me or I'll come find you." You replied with a nervous chuckle as Archie's smile reached his ears.
"Perfect.. I will definitely be the one finding you." He said, before turning away with a wave.
Your shoulders gave out as if you had been holding your breath underwater for so long. Did you just say yes to that? That was unbelievable.
There was another guy that lived rent free in your mind and yet you said yes to some other guy?
God, you needed a coffee.
You needed to get back in the game. The old you would've been appalled by the thought of it.
"Y/N! We need your verdict here!" One of the second years called out from a distance.
"Coming!" You were suddenly pulled away from your thoughts as you rushed over to the second years to help.
This was going to be long and painful indeed.
When the first day of Founder's Day came, the university had been jam packed with students. They were checking out all the booths, eating food, having fun. North did MC the first part of the event as well as you stood in the crowd.
She was good at what she did and it was clear that being MIA for two days was so worth it.
Soon, the crowd dispersed into their own groups. The sciences and medical department did a booth that was somewhat similiar to a dunk tank, only it was slime.
There were tons of creative booths across the campus, but the Engineering department was definitely not ignored.
Your department came prepared with remote control robots to be put in a small arena for a fight. Like the thing in Big Hero 6.
It was very interactive and got so much attention. Sales were skyrocketing and the other display items were selling out.
Connor had been quiet the entire day as well. He maintained in his section of the booth and didn't speak to you at all.
He didn't even glance at you.
Somehow, that made your heart lurch. Did he not care anymore? Was he actually disappointed about the truth as well?
To be completely fair, you were just.. surprised. Maybe even scared. Because you've been competing with someone for years only to find out they're the same person you came to when you were at your lowest.
You didn't know what Connor thought about any of it. Because you didn't give him a chance to. You had completely shut him out without a word or explanation why you did so.
Eventually, he gave up. That's it then.
By the time you got to your dorm after all that chaos, there was still that lingering feeling of regret, maybe even jealousy that was plaguing your thoughts.
Seeing Izzy cling around him like a fucking leech? It made your blood boil in anger.
So that was it? He immediately moved on to another girl after promising all that shit to you that night?
It was repulsing. Connor Anderson wasn't even the type to entertain girls.
Perhaps.. he was doing it on purpose.
He knew it would catch your attention. And he was purposely playing along with Izzy just to spite you.
When you dressed down to a comfortable pajama set, you plopped down onto your desk chair and opened your computer.
You haven't really used it in a while besides writing reports or researching about the next project.
But then, something popped up from the screen.
It was the app you and Connor used to communicate with each other. Anonymously of course.
Apparently, he had sent a few messages the past few days; asking you what was wrong.
c0ncrete28: i know you dont wanna talk, but can i come over this afternoon?
c0ncrete28: you werent at your dorm, suppose you were busy somewhere else?
c0ncrete28: i just want to know if i did something wrong so i can fix it
c0ncrete28: i saw you at the courtyard this morning and im pretty sure you saw me too
c0ncrete28: youre angry, im aware. but please give me a chance to understand whats really happening
c0ncrete28: Y/N i dont know how long ill be able to go on like this
Had he really been trying to reach out that bad?
You felt like a monster. Shutting him out like that without even giving him a proper explanation or goodbye.
Connor must've felt so confused.
But you weren't in the mood to feel down. You wanted to ease some stress for a bit.
Only way to do that was play games of course.
When you logged into Overwatch and was faced with the main menu, none of your friends were online. Including him.
So you played a few games for about thity minutes without a party.
It was boring of course. Whenever you played with him, you were always laughing about the next stupid thing or bullying him about whiffing.
But he wasn't here.
When an hour passed and you were just about to close your computer, someone was trying to invite you to their party.
c0ncrete28.
This idiot.
You didn't know if you should accept or not. But you felt like you owed him something.
Obviously, you did. After ignoring him for so long and acting like he didn't exist whenever he reached out. It was only fair.
When you accepted it, Connor immediately moved.
c0ncrete28: hey, you didnt think of inviting me to play?
misoosoop: why? did i have to?
c0ncrete28: no, but it wouldve been way more fun if you did
c0ncrete28: are you still angry? you cant leave me here guessing, you know
c0ncrete28: but if you dont wanna spill, then ill find out for myself
misoosoop: excuse me? i dont need to spill anything
misoosoop: did you invite me on purpose just to squeeze shit out of me?
c0ncrete28: not really, i knew i wouldnt get anything
c0ncrete28: we can just play if you want
misoosoop: ive been playing for an hour already, im gonna rest
c0ncrete28: we used to stay up until 4 back then
misoosoop: so? that was then
c0ncrete28: i understand. please rest then. we can play another time
misoosoop: ππ
c0ncrete28: whos the guy you were talking to earlier? you looked comfy
misoosoop: and how is that relative to what we were talking about?
c0ncrete28: oh we were talking about something? i thought that was just small talk
misoosoop: its really bold of you to bring that up when you were getting comfy yourself
c0ncrete28: i was actually quite uncomfortable. you know i dont do well with interactions like that
misoosoop: right, tell that to a rock
c0ncrete28: π«
c0ncrete28: ill leave you to it, get some rest
c0ncrete28: goodnight, Y/N.
When you logged off, you didn't realize you've been holding your breath the entire time. Your heart was pounding like crazy.
It was the first time you spoke to him in a while.
You didn't even think that speaking to him as Connor and not c0ncrete28 wasn't gonna make your heart race like it wanted to pop out of your chest.
The realization hit you like a gunshot. You had to face him eventually. Because he was still trying.
The day of the campfire came soon and it was readful. Why? The entire campus was huddled main courtyard, some in the bleachers. It was packed.
The flames sparkled like wildfire spreading across the earth as you found a spot near the back, far from the main event.
Founder's Day couldn't be more tiring if you had to manage all of that on your shoulders.
Just as promised, Archie approached you with some steaming coffee and a boyish smile that reached the sun.
He sat beside you, turning to look at you for a moment before looking back at the crowd.
"It's really busy. Didn't think I'd see you here though. Are you alright?" He asked, nudging you gently on the shoulder.
"It's whatever. Prof said I'd get extra points on the next project so it's a win win. How's the OJT?" You returned as you accepted the coffee, taking small sips.
"Hm, sounds pretty worth it then. OJT is OJT. We're not being paid or getting extra points or anything. But we have higher chances in graduating with Latin honors. It's demanding, but it's whatever." He repeated bits of your words as he smiled again, sipping his own coffee in the meantime.
You nodded slowly, looking into the crowd as you tilted your head slightly.
In the distance, Connor was walking with Izzy again. She was holding his arm as she went on and on about something entirely boring again.
It was sickening.
As a matter of fact, you were jealous.
"Hey, Y/N. Earth to Y/N?" Archie called out, waving a hand in front of your face.
"Shit. Sorry. I just saw a really big bug in someone's hair. It was ridiculous."
Ridiculous indeed....
"A bug? I'd love to see that. Where?" Archie smiled, looking around the crowd for that non-existent bug.
You sighed, shaking your head.
"Must've been my imagination. Thanks for the coffee by the way. I'll pay you back." You said.
"Don't be silly. I said I'd make it up to you, right?" He chuckled, slowly bringing his face closer to yours.
Archie blinked, his Adam's apple bobbing slightly as he prepares himself.
"Look, I don't mean to be a creep. But.. I've liked you for a few months now. I was.. thinking.. maybe you'd like to go out on a date with me?" Archie asked, tilting his head slightly.
He was a capable man. He was attractive, popular, and smart.
But to you, Connor Anderson was a hundred times better than Archie.
Hell, he was better than all of the guys in the entire University.
You stared at Archie as he leaned closer and closer. Was he trying to kiss you before you even got to say anything?
You cleared your throat, opening your mouth to speak when someone else did.
"Y/N." Connor approached the two of you, grasping your arm as he tugged you to stand up.
"I need to talk to you." He said, ushering you to follow him as Archie just stared between you two.
"Hey, I was talking to her first." Archie stood up, trying to step between you and Connor.
Connor's jaw only tightened at the sight of another man trying so desperately to breathe your way like that.
"I just need to speak to her. It's urgent." Connor insisted, his grip becoming a little more gentle as he looked at you.
"Archie, it's fine. I'll be back soon." You said, nodding at Archie as you turned to Connor.
With that, he led you to the back of the dormitories where no one would disturb the two of you.
He stopped just a few feet away from you as you stood near the wall with your hands behind your back.
What was he gonna say?
Is he gonna be angry about what happened?
Did he hear what Archie said?
"You like older guys now?" He asked, though it didn't sound like a question at all.
It was as if he was taunting you. Giving hints that he didn't like what was happening anymore.
"What?" You returned, raising a brow at him.
"What did I do wrong exactly? I get that I've been an ass to you, but I really wanted to change that." He started, finding the right words to express how he really felt.
His jaw clenched.
"I did lie to you though. I didn't wanna be your friend. I didn't want to destroy the competition we had. I still want that fire. But I don't want us to be friends." He stepped closer, his eyes brimming with desperation.
"I want to be yours. I want to be the man you run to when things get tiring. I want to be your duo in every game you think is interesting." Connor stopped just four feet away from you, his chest heaving as he confessed every bit of his being to you.
"I may have been your rival in a way, but I'll make sure I'll give my everything into being the man you deserve. Just.. just give me a chance." He pleaded, wanting to reach out to you and touch you.
He couldn't believe that some other guy got to confess first to you when he should've been the only one that was allowed to.
Connor didn't even understand why you were so angry. He just wanted to be yours.
"You.. you idiot..." You whispered softly, taking a step closer to him.
He blinked, closing the distance between you two with just one big step as he wrapped his arms around you.
He buried his face into your hair, then the crook of your neck as his arms caged around your waist.
"I've got you... I finally got you." He whispered hoarsely, bringing his lips to your temple before pulling back slightly.
"I haven't even said anything yet." You retorted, teasing him.
"Right... Right, yes. S-Say something then. Reject me. Or.. don't. Please..." He pleaded again, looking into your eyes.
A chuckle escaped your lips at his words. He was being a nervous wreck at the moment, and it didn't suit him at all.
"I.. want to be yours too, Connor." With that, you bridged the gap between you two and brought your lips to his.
He couldn't believe it at first.
In response, his lips crashed against yours in a swift as he kissed you fervently.
His hands ran along the strands of your hair as he deepened it, his tongue seeking entry into your mouth.
You groaned in return, but eventually opened up a little to give way to his tongue.
It was getting hot despite the cold temperature of the night. And you were enjoying every bit of it.
When the two of you pulled away, he sighed softly. His eyes were a different gaze now.
βCan weβ¦ go somewhere quieter?β he asked, still holding your hand like he was afraid youβd disappear.

Hello to all! To everyone reading my ongoing series (Friendly Fire and COC), I'm updating you guys to let you know that I might not be able to post the following chapters soon. I have planned to post much earlier but I couldn't find the right time to do so.
I'm currently having a hard time finding the motivation to write as well as trying to keep my mind clear. Therefore, I wouldn't really have the ability to write a well written chapter for any of my series. I want you guys to have the best time while reading them, and I wouldn't want to force myself to write just for the sake of a deadline.
This doesn't really mean anything bad. I'm just not in a good place as of the moment. I plan to keep my promises and hopefully, I'll be able to write soon.
Thank you to everyone who are reading my fanfics! ππ It brings me so much joy to know that there are people looking forward to my posts π’ I'll be back with you guys!

The exam hall began to empty out as the proctor announced time on the examinees, some even slamming their things on the table due to how frustrated they were about the test.
For you, it had been rather.. average. You had been prepared after all despite only having a few textbooks to back your studying.
Though, the test included more mathematics than you would usually expect. Nothing surprising of course. You had easily maneuvered through whatever the hell that test challenged you to do.
You were.. second after all. Second to the most annoying guy in campus.
A student hurried past you, almost knocking off your bag that was set on your table as you began to pack.
You had caught it just in time, placing the leather back on the surface before glaring at the guy who was in too much of a rush to even apologize.
Rude.
The proctor finally exited the hall himself, carrying the test papers and answer sheets in his arms before excusing himself from the group of students who gathered up in the doorway.
"Fuck, I totally flunked that. Jas won't let me fucking copy," one of the students murmured, a laugh coming up from his throat.
"What'd you get on 31? How'd you solve it?" Another voice rang out from the other side of the room.
As you turned, you realized the guy he'd been talking to was Connor Anderson.
He looked rather, uncomfortable.
Were they seriously asking him for test answers after all that?
"Uh.. forgot." He said casually, coming off as clueless but to you, he clearly didn't care. Of course he wouldn't go revealing his answers. Even after the test was over.
"Come on, I gotta know if I got jackpot. I spent five minutes on that number alone." The other man pleaded, nudging Connor as he was packing his things.
Connor only scratched the back of his head, a little dismissive of the student nudging his shoulder and pulling on his shirt.
"Think it was.. uh..." He began, though never really finishing his sentence.
The student felt a little helpless because of his attitude, knowing he wouldn't really get any information on him.
"Okay, at least tell me something. Who do you think got a better score? You or Y/N? Heard she's been trying to throw you off the top by a decimal." He laughed, nudging Connor a little harder.
You could clearly see a vein pop in his temple as his shirt was yet again, tugged and abused by the other guy.
Connor's jaw tightened a little, a low chuckle coming out of his throat. The sound itself sent a tingle down your spine.
"I do not have a clue..." He said sarcastically, his shoulders slumping a little as he shook his head.
"Though I wouldn't worry about it. The decimal she's chasing is still far. I won't be thrown off by her." He added, swinging his backpack on his right shoulder.
The other guy started nodding, agreeing with Connor.
"You're right, you're the smartest here after all." He said, patting him on the back though it felt more like a hit than a pat.
Connor only moved away, a small smile forming on his lips as he brushed past the student.
"Yeah, sure." Connor said, shaking his head.
The smartest?! That idiot.. I'm still in the exam hall!
The thought of being dismissed like that as second smartest to Connor, it was like being pushed back to the last row of the line.
Of course, he's still a dick.
A very pretentious one.
To admit that you wouldn't be able to throw him off the chart and land on the top, it was a fucking insult.
All that gentleman act was all for nothing if that attitude was his default.
You somehow felt a little.. disappointed. As if that night felt nothing. As if he didn't almost suffocate Jameson till he turned purple was just an act of kindness. To you, it wasn't.
Half the guys in the university only cared about themselves and what they gained from other people. It was just how they worked.
But not Connor Anderson at least.
He was the pinnacle of what every man should be. What every man dream of being.
And yet, hearing him say those words totally buggedyou off.
In a way, you also remembered that you've been in the long game with him since freshman year. One night isn't going to change the rivalry that was brewing between you two.
You hung your bag on your shoulder, holding the strap of it as you rushed out of the hall, brushing past a few students that huddled on the exit.
God, a coffee would easily ease the tension on your neck right now.
The thought of being second to that man. How he dismissed you so easily.
Coffee. Coffee. Coffee.
You pulled out your phone, typing away as you texted North if she was free for a coffee run outside campus.
"I'm itching, where are u pls I need caffeine. I'll drop by ur building in like five ish -"
You stopped in your tracks with a half finished sentence typed on your phone as you bumped into something hard. Did you hit a wall?
No.
The "wall" turned, there stood Connor Anderson.
You looked up, catching your phone mid air and almost touching his...
NO!
Thankfully, you had avoided the inevitable.
You clutched the gadget to your chest just after catching it, finally looking up at him again.
He raised his brow, a little confused. He definitely noticed how you almost touched the buckle of his pants.
He definitely did.
Connor let out a breath, stepping away a bit to give you a little space.
"Something wrong?" He asked casually, his hand hanging in the air as if he wanted to help you steady yourself.
You quickly fixed your posture, shoving your phone in your pocket as you forgot all about North and that coffee run.
A low sigh came out of your throat as you calmed your senses, clutching your bag a little closer to your body.
"Nothing. Sorry. Didn't see you." The words came out a little rushed, maybe even sounding a little pissed.
He tilted his head slightly, looking away for a second before back at you.
He too, didn't know what to do or say.
"Okay.... Are you okay then?" Connor asked, though it seemed.. genuine. Far from the words he had deliberately said out of pure ego earlier.
"Yes. Just fine." You replied, glancing at the bulletin board next to him for a moment.
Wow, hm. This is a nice board.
He cleared his throat, managing to catch your attention again.
"Okay then... See you." He said, turning away to walk off.
You decided then, it was no use being a blabbering and stammering idiot in front of the guy. If he wanted to play that game, you're gonna make sure to win it this round.
"Wait." You called out, trying to reach for his arm but quickly retreating your hand back.
He turned again, looking down at your figure.
"Your jacket. It's still in my dorm." You began, rubbing the fabric of your sweater between two fingers.
Why did it suddenly feel so hot? It's 21 degrees outside, you idiot!
"Oh.. yeah. My jacket." He said, scratching the back of his head as he thought of something.
"I'll drop by your dorm to pick it up. We're in the same building anyway." He said, dropping his hand to his side. His tone was a little dismissive, a little too casual for your liking.
Dropping by your dorm?
"Yeah.. okay. My room number is 742, floor 3." You informed him, sighing a little at the end.
"We live in the same floor too." He let out a soft chuckle, fixing the strand of hair that fell between his eyes.
The same floor? After having dormed there for three years, he only lived by the end of the hall?
"I'm room 759. If you want, you can drop by yourself. Really depends when you're free or not." He said, shoving his hands in the pockets of his trousers.
"Uh.. you can just.. drop by mine. I'm always hanging there. So..." You trailed off, the fabric of your sweater suddenly becoming a little too rough due to how much you were rubbing it.
"Sure. I'll drop by tonight." He said, nodding.
You nodded back slowly as the silence between you two stretched.
Neither spoke for a moment until Connor let out another sigh.
"Alright then, gotta go to practice. See you." He said, raising his palm without waiving. He finally turned and walked away to the exit, his back to you.
The way he walked, talked, even breathed...
It could send a bird flopping down in an instant.
That man was a walking hazard. A very smart and utterly competitive hazard that's convinced he's better than you in everything.
For the past five hours, you've been doing all sorts of things.
Catching up with North, telling her about the test, that good for nothing proctor, and of course.. Connor. She'd been rather entertained by your stories lately, saying she'd like to experience this "rom-com" in real time.
It wasn't much different to one anyway. So you thought.
No, Connor Anderson is very much off limits. He's been at your throat since you first got into the university. Since you first sat on your first lecture.
His annoyingly round brown eyes you wanted to poke out of their sockets. They could send you to your knees without much effort and it frustrated you.
Connor was inadvertently absent most of the time. Not in classes, but perhaps, in the social world.
No one has seen him hang around with any women in the campus, despite being included in the top five heart throbs in the university.
Of course he was. Who wouldn't fall for a smart Engineering guy who has it all planned out for himself? The top of his class, and no one in his radar?
There's also been a rumor going on that he had recently rejected a sophomore during one of the latest events that was hosted. A romantic confession behind the bleachers that only ended in tears. Apparently, he had helped her with tutoring and fell for him. It wasn't the same case for him though.
He was unfairly considerate to everyone. But he likes to think that he's better than them too. Just like how he deliberately confessed that you wouldn't get to beat him.
Connor is the kind of person you can easily gravitate toward to but end up getting burned once you get too close. Now, you're just trying to stay in the safe zone.
Keep your heart intact. Keep your mind focused on the top spot.
You wouldn't let a man tell you otherwise, right?
Soon, the chat with North came to an end and she finally excused herself to go back to her own dorm to rest.
It was already pretty dark out as the sun started to set. You quickly made your way back to your own dorm, having yet another crisis with the broken doorknob.
It was dangerous of course, but you didn't know how to fix it and didn't have anyone to call about it. Besides, there weren't much people hanging around the third floor.
The door slammed shut behind you as you tidied up a bit before Connor got there.
It was now 7:36PM and you've been playing on your computer for the past thirty minutes just to pass the time.
You planned to invite your online friend for a quick game actually, but he'd been offline since yesterday.
misoosoop: are u dead or are u ded?
misoosoop: man, so bored. text me when u get online
The keyboard clicked as you hit send. A sigh left your lips as the minutes ticked by. What's taking him so long?
7:41PM
misoosoop: btw i bought the new battlepass lmk if u want a quick flex π
7:42PM
A knock.
You got up abruptly, trying to fix whatever the hell happened to your hair as you approached the door.
One quick glance at the mirror. All good.
Your hand turned the knob, though it didn't open the first try. You turned again, harshly this time.
"Jesus Christ!" You exclaimed, tugging on the metal as it finally opened.
"Hey, hi." The casualty of your voice wasn't enough to mask the fact that you had broken your doorknob and had it hanging on the hole of the door.
Connor only stared back, blinking.
He then lowered his gaze, seeing the doorknob hanging for it's dear life.
God, that was so embarrassing.
He only sighed, shaking his head as she covered his mouth to muffle his laugh.
The sight irritated you a little, but seeing him find it funny...?
"What's so funny?!" You confronted, a blush forming on your face as Connor only laughed harder.
"Sorry, sorry," he said as he fanned his hand at you.
His laughter died down, a heavy breath escaping his lips as he focused on you now.
"You should've told me you were having a dispute with your doorknob. I could've gone over here and fixed it for you a long time ago." He said, rubbing the back of his head.
"I'll be back to get some tools, stay here." He said, turning as he ran to the end of the hall to his own dorm room.
You wanted to rip your hair out of your own scalp the moment he mention fixing it. It was so utterly embarrassing.
And to be seen fumbling like an idiot like that?!
Though, it was rather.. thoughtful of him to offer to fix it for you just like that. But he's like that to everyone! He'd throw his own jacket on a puddle if there was an old lady on the line.
You sighed as he came back with a toolbox.
"You don't have to, I can just call someone else to fix it."
"Don't be ridiculous, I'm already here." He interrupted, kneeling on one knee as he inspected it.
"It won't be too hard, don't worry. And it's free." Connor added as he started working on the broken doorknob.
You could only stand there in silence as he worked on the metal, the vein on his hands pulsing a little as he moved.
Keep your eyes elsewhere, you idiot!
"You know, what you're doing is dangerous. Someone could break into your dorm and rob your place. Or worse." He informed, turning the screw as he rose to his full height.
"There." He added, looking over to you at his side. He tilted his head.
He noticed you were starting to zone out a bit.
"Hello?" Connor asked, nudging you a little.
"Shit. Sorry. Thanks." You sighed, shaking your head. "You didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to." He replied, putting away his tools in the box.
You turned, the air suddenly becoming a little too thin and awkward as you stood close to him.
"Do you want something to drink? It's the least I can do for you." You offered, playing with the fabric of your sweater.
"Water is fine. Thanks." He retaliated, closing the door behind him as he approached the space.
His eyes wandered, looking over the expanse of your room as he let out a soft breath.
"Nice room." He mentioned, grabbing the glass of water as you approached him.
As he took a sip, he found your computer open at the corner of your room. Connor slowly tilted his head, trying to read whatever was on it.
He wasn't trying to snoop of course, maybe just a little curious.
"You play?" He asked, turning to you as he lowered the glass on the table beside him.
"Occasionally, yes. Do you?" You returned, wrapping your arms around your waist.
"Suppose. Just to kill some time."
Then, your phone dinged. A notification. It must've been from North. Or your mom. But it definitely brought you to your senses.
Connor wasn't here to make acquaintances.
"Uh.. your jacket, here." You reached over to your dresser, pulling the fabric off the hanger as you folded it for him.
"Thanks." He said, resting his jacket on his left arm.
"You know, we should play sometime. When we're both off studying." The suggestion came too casually, and you sort of.. blushed because of it.
Was he seriously inviting you to play games with him? Or was this another way to distract you from your goal?
"I.. uh... I'm not that good. I think I'd rather stick to studying." You said, fiddling with the bottom strands of your hair. It felt too awkward...
"I'm not great either. If you're worried about your grades all the time, how are you supposed to live?"
It was just a simple question. But one that you really weren't able to answer.
You've spent your entire life pursuing to be great. Chasing scholarships and earning the respect of others to the point that you forget that there's light out there worth seeing.
Other than the lights from the library or the lamp of your room.
"Easy for you to say.. you're smarter than me. You can easily occupy first place without breaking a sweat. While I have to think of ways on how to throw you off that platform." You confessed, sighing softly to yourself as he stared at you.
Connor hadn't really thought of it that way. He only did what he could because he can. Not because he really wanted to spite you.
Maybe sometimes, it was fun seeing you get pissed at him for getting a higher score. But hearing you say out loud that you were disappointed. In yourself? He felt like he was he most cruel person in the room.
"I didn't know it ticked you off that much. I thought it was just.. playful banter between us." He replied.
"Playful banter? You've been bantering with me since freshman year, shoving your perfect grades at my face while I have to settle for a decimal lower. It didn't just tick me off, it's ruining me." Your body turned, moving away from him as you sat on your desk chair.
He didn't follow you, but he slowly took a step closer just to bridge that gap between you.
"I'm sorry. I should've been more considerate. I forgot that I'm not the only scholar in this university. And.. I should've been more careful of your feelings." Connor retorted, his hands coming to rest on his sides.
"You don't have to apologize. It's just how things work." You answered, looking over your computer.
"Well, it shouldn't. Tell you what, let's study together. No more competing. I want to learn from you. Not just academically, but..." He didn't have the guts to say it out loud, but you knew what he meant.
You knew exactly what he meant.
"I don't think you can really learn anything from me. But I'll have to take you up on that offer. I can get to know your secret weapon and finally acquire first place." You finally looked at him, a smile forming on your face.
He returned your smile, stopping just a few feet behind you. Connor sighed, tilting his head slightly to the side as he spoke.
"Good. At least you'll get to experience it even just for a little bit. Next year, I'll take it from you again." He smirked, moving a little closer.
His gaze moved slightly behind you, seeing your open computer.
Connor's eyes widened, a low scoff coming out of his mouth.

"misoosoop: btw i bought the new battlepass lmk if u want a quick flex π"

Whether or not the midterms included this and that, you had already read three textbooks about core mathematics and two on specialized design principles. The third year of Engineering had always been hell, as the juniors described last year. With already two cups of coffee down in just four hours, you couldn't see the end of it.
It was harsh, having to sit still for hours on end just to focus on a shit load of words on paper about Engineering Mechanics and whatnot. You felt your own heart betray you as you felt yet another palpitation occur.
There were still a lot of things that needed to get done that day. For example, why North kept texting you about the frat party later tonight? She mentioned it was off campus, with lots of booze included.
Of course, it was just a stupid party where frat brothers could show off their new car and take home their targets just a few hours later.
The idea of hosting parties during midterms was ridiculous enough as it is. Do people really have that much time on their hands? What about the midterms? What about their grades?!
Suddenly, someone pulled the chair next to your table. It was Connor Anderson. A fellow Engineering student in the same year as you.
He didn't even bother taking a glance at you as he started flipping through his own textbooks. At least someone else cared about their grades. Nonetheless, he had been your most annoying competitor ever since freshman year.
Connor was very calculated about what he does. Weirdly enough, he has his own to do list. Who does that these days? It was helpful, sure. Yet very out of date. But maybe you just liked doing what you can without a fixed schedule telling you what to do.
He had those black rimmed glasses on which oddly made him look more masculine. You tried to avoid looking at him, but it was rather difficult given how focused he was on his textbook.
Or so you thought.
Connor tilted his head just slightly, just a fraction before his eyes met yours. Those familiar brown eyes of his that you've always mistaken for a puppy's.
But his gaze was far from friendly. You sat frozen, your cheek resting on your knuckles as you stared at him. His look reminded you that you weren't friends. Not even a little bit.
He let out a soft scoff to himself before returning his attention back to his textbook.
How rude!
Did he really think you didn't hear that scoff? Just as you were about to speak, your phone dinged.
"I don't wanna have to beg, girl. You're coming to that party!! πΉ"
The loud, echoing laughter and music radiating from the house party made your ears almost burst. North made you wear one of her dresses that night as she shoved you inside her dorm room earlier. A light blue, off shoulder that pooled around your knees with a corset top.
You haven't exactly attended a party in a long time despite the fact that you were the one who mostly hosted them back in freshman year.
The stares from seniors in different departments felt somewhat, creepy. Of course, it was only normal. There were guys who had freshmen in their laps and made out without a care in their surroundings. Their hands would grip the others asses to the point that their clothes might rip.
North pulled you further into the party as she offered you a drink from the table in which you refused. You had to stay sober to be able to study tomorrow.
The booze here looked like piss. Not to mention the ones serving it at the corner of the living room.
The dress you wore felt almost too tight at the moment as Jameson from the political science department basically fucked you with his eyes. The guy barely knew how to calm his dick down during parties like this.
He had a reputation for bedding half the campus at this point. Of course, you had no plans being another one of them.
Slowly, you began to pull yourself away from the party and out to the swimming pool area where people skinny dipped and made out by the pool. It was somewhat worse, but way quieter.
Supposed it was better than getting eye-fucked by a playboy.
As you stood by the poolside, a pair of hands grasped your waist and pulled you back to their chest.
Jameson.
"Hey, pretty." He breathed against your neck, his breath smelling like two different types of liquor mixed together.
"Excuse me," you tried to elbow him, but Jameson only pressed himself closer to you. His chest pressed up on your back as he started to feel you up.
"Please don't run. I only wanna play." He murmured against your ear, his hand on your stomach.
"A pretty thing like you shouldn't be alone in a party like this. Tell me, did you wear this for me tonight? Were you bored of the sweaters and cardigans you always wore?" Jameson chuckled lowly, his tongue darting out to lick your ear.
"Jesus Christ, get off!" You protested, finally managing to elbow the guy on his stomach. He didn't so much budge though, only tightened his grip on you.
His hands wrapped around your waist, trying to rub you against him. What a disgusting pervert...
"Come on, pretty. I know you want this. That dress is basically screaming fuck me, please. I'm such a slut. I'm only here to satisfy you, baby." Just as he tried to proceed with his actions, he was suddenly pulled back by someone.
The lost of his arms caging you made you turn around in shock, wondering what just happened.
There stood Connor Anderson with his hand tightening around the back of Jameson's collar.
How would Connor attend a party like this? And defend you from a bastard like Jameson?
Jameson only protested, trying to pull himself away from the man trying to suffocate him with his own shirt.
"What the fuck, man? Get off!" He yelled, trying to pull his collar down from the front so he could breath.
Connor only gripped the fabric tighter.
"That's what she said, and you didn't get off. Fucking piece of shit you are." Connor snarled, yanking the guy back to look at him properly.
Jameson looked absolutely scared for his life, he was turning red.
You stood there without even trying to help him. Just watching him get a taste of his own medicine by the very man who you claimed to hate with all your guts.
"Apologize." He demanded, glancing over to you and back at Jameson.
"Now."
He let go of Jameson as he stumbled back a few steps, trying to catch his breath. If Connor hadn't let go, he would've actually suffocated...
"I'm sorry, okay?! Jesus..." Jameson yelled, clutching at his throat.
"That sounds completely half-assed." You defended, crossing your arms as he breathed.
"I'm sorry. I apologize for being such a dick." He immediately spat out as he noticed Connor moving closer from his peripheral.
How did the nerdy guy with puppy dog eyes get so insanely hot?
"Good. You can leave now." He ordered the other guy as Jameson practically ran, almost tripping on his way.
Connor watched Jameson leave before slowly turning to you. His gaze was unreadable, like always. Like how he would glance once and never again. How it would absolutely piss you off because of how he dismissed you.
Right now, his expression may still be the same. But he only walked closer until he was just a two feet away.
He blinked once, you returned it.
"Did he hurt you?" He asked softly, refusing to break eye contact.
He wanted to look if Jameson had left any bruises. Or whatever dirt the guy carried.
But he knew his eyes shouldn't wander. Not when you're like this.
"No... No, he didn't." You reply with the same, quiet tone.
Has Connor always spoken this gently? Did it come with his aloof personality or was it just for you?
Surely, he would've done the same to any other girl. That's the guy he was.
He may be quiet, but he's a gentleman at heart. Everyone in their department knew that.
Connor was smart, competitive, and determined. You had always convinced yourself that he was an ass as well.
But you were wrong.
Very.
"Are you okay then?" He asked once more, his eyes still locked onto yours.
You had never thought a version of this guy could be so.. warm... So welcoming.
But this was also the same guy who always stole the first spot from you! The guy who makes it his life's mission to beat you in every subject.
It pissed you off, you were always pissed off. Why did he have to be so.. so perfect?
"I'm fine. He didn't break any bones or anything... I'm very much intact. Thanks." You joked, rubbing one of your arms to calm yourself.
He noticed this almost immediately. Instinctively, he took off his jacket and hung it over your bare shoulders.
Thank you, North.. for lending me your dress.. or else Connor Anderson wouldn't have lent me his jacket!
You looked at Connor as he got closer, his eyes fixed on his jacket now that rested on your body.
"As much as you look.. beautiful in that dress... I prefer you in sweaters and cardigans." He then shoved his hands in the pockets of his trousers as he stepped back.
"Then you won't have to worry about being cold." He added.
Absolutely not. Not when I have the chance of having your jacket keeping me warm!
You only stared back, surprised by his actions. The night felt warmer now. Even if you were so sure you couldn't feel your shoulders just a few minutes ago.
Was it because of him?
You felt your own cheeks flush with warmth, like the heat was rushing up to your face and making you look like a blushing idiot.
He blinked, staring at you.
"Thanks.. for this.. and for.. you know, standing up for me." You managed to let out, offering a small smile at him.
Connor only nodded.
"Yeah. What are you even doing here anyway? I remember seeing you earlier in the library. I was convinced you were planning to spend the night there." He claimed, tilting his head a little.
"The library? Oh.. yeah. No, my friend forced me to come. I think it's a bit refreshing though. To take a break from all that studying." You replied, looking everywhere but his eyes.
He noticed this.
"And you? You hoarded all the useful textbooks and left me the useless ones. I thought you were gonna spend the entire day stuck in them." You added.
"I suppose it's the same reason as yours. Studying gets boring sometimes. Besides, if my competitor is out here having fun, why can't I?" He smiled, brushing his hair back a little.
Did this guy actually know how to smile? Since freshman year, all Connor did was brood and roll his eyes at you.
Now he's smiling?
"Perhaps," you spoke. "I need to find my friend. I'm getting a little tired. Thanks again."
Connor nodded, stepping back.
"It's no problem. Get home safe." He said, making space for you to leave. He didn't watch you leave though. His gaze turned to the pool once you turned.
Of course, you didn't try looking back. That would look stupid. Because if you did, there's a chance he might see that stupid blush on your face that definitely isn't makeup.
The party was still very much alive after that incident. Jameson was nowhere to be found. Probably occupying yet another room upstairs with the next pretty girl he saw after almost getting suffocated by Connor Anderson.
You pushed through a hoard of people in the living room, trying to find North amidst the crowd.
You wondered if Connor was still by the poolside too, but decided to ignore the thought.
Just then, you found North nursing her fifth drink this evening.
"North! Let's go home. I can't with this party." You pulled on her wrist, trying to speak to her along with the loud speakers bursting.
"Oh hey, I was wondering where you'd gone. What are you wearing?" She asked, looking over your form where Connor's jacket rested over your shoulders.
"I'll explain on the way. Let's go to my car." You pulled her away as she scrambled to grab her things from the counter, even sneaking a bottle in her purse.
"What? My booze stock is running out." She chuckled as she was hauled out of the house party.
The drive to the dormitories back to campus was pretty quiet. But also kind of loud due to North's constant gasps.
You had explained everything that happened.
How Jameson from political science groped you and blah blah blah.
Blah blah this and that.
And how Connor Anderson absolutely manhandled the pervert with only one hand while he made him apologize to you and gave you his jacket and told you to get home safe?!
North basically died.
"Excuse me?! What?! What? So that jacket you're wearing right now is his?! You sure got it, girl!" She laughed, fixing her smudged lipstick whilst holding a compact mirror.
"And I thought making out with the frat president was insane. He was a good kisser obviously, but man... That's a way more interesting story." North sighed, shaking her head.
"Is it...? I thought I looked like a stuttering, blushing idiot in front of him..." You whispered, tilting your head to the side as you stared at the empty road.
"Girl, he gave you his jacket. I haven't seen that guy interact with a female, like ever." She looked at you, shoving away the compact mirror.
"And you can keep the dress by the way, since he liked it so much." North chuckled.
As soon as you opened your dorm room, you immediately collapsed on your twin sized bed, still wearing his jacket.
You checked your phone, seeing the time.
12:09AM
Well, it still looked a little early?
You began to peel yourself away from the cold sheets of your bed, shrugging off the heavy material resting on your shoulders as you hung it on your dresser. God, you still smelled like him.
At this point, your entire dorm room will smell like him.
You thought he's the type of guy who wore cheap cologne just to mask out the unusual aura radiating off him. But no. He smelled almost.. erotic.
Like you were being lured in only by scent alone. His jacket smelled like musk, cedar, and lavender all at once. Undeniably a man, but unusually feminine.
He was the dream.
Too bad he's a stuck up who loves beating you at everything you do. No matter how much you try, he's always at the top.
After sulking about how good the man smelled, you decided to open your computer. It was useless trying to study now, since your mind was obviously fogged with tonight's events.
The blue light hit your eyes too harshly, but the sight of your online duo playing one of your favorite games made you widen your eyes even more.
Gosh, didn't even bother chatting me to hop on.
You clicked on his user, typing out a few sentences to catch his attention from the game.
misoosoop: u know u can't play this damn game w/out me carrying u π₯Ά
misoosoop: GET OFF RN LETS PLAY SUM ELSE
A few minutes later, he replied.
c0ncrete28: hi. no i was just fixing my settings

misoosoop: fair fqirfair whatever bro just hop on before i hop on u
c0ncrete28: wtf
After playing for about an hour, you decided to close the game and rest your eyes for a bit.
You and your duo have been playing together for about a year and a half without even knowing each other's names.
All you knew was that c0ncrete28 was around your age and a bitch. But maybe because you liked picking on him for being sloppy on certain games you play together.
Basically calling each other by insults to get the other's attention.
It was normal, for you two. And no one tried to get personal.
It was better like that.
Just as you were about to close your computer, you got another text from him.
c0ncrete28: seriously, you ok? i know we agreed to not get personal, but i had to carry YOU this time btw
c0ncrete28: its alright if you dont wanna tell
misoosoop: its just uni stuff
misoosoop: u know how it is
